How-To Root Your Sprint HTC Hero using a Mac

I had no problems until I got to this step. When I tried to go to the flash_recovery point, it said flash recovery not found. I tried starting over from step one and still got back to that point. Am I missing something? I put all the files needed into my tools directory as suggested. Any help would be great.

I had the same problem. type this instead

flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img

instead of flash_recovery recovery recovery-RA-Heroc-v1.5.2.img

This thread helped. I didnt have 1 problem, rooted it right up, flashed the 2.1 Lite on there and I am running it currently without any problems. Thank you for putting in the time and effort to do that. Completely awesome.

no problem
FYI to anyone, the steps are exactly the same for linux, but you need to run adb in superuser mode (on the computer, not phone) first, otherwise you get a permissions error.

New user here. Not having any big problems with the current version, but really got sick and tired of being strung-along by all of the Sprint and HTC rumors. Time to do something about it. I'll be using this guide, either today or this weekend. Thanks for putting it together. I'll be back if I have any questions, and if it goes smoothly then I'll come back and share my delight to have 2.1 finally.

stuck trying to push the recovery file to the sdcard

hello,
This is the first time im trying to hack my phone.
I followed all the steps listed and get stuck on step 8. When i try to push the Recovery file to the card, I get the following error:

Adams-MacBook-Pro:tools Adam$ ./adb push recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img /SDCARD
failed to copy 'recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img' to '/SDCARD': Read-only file system

USB debug mode is on. Ive mounted and unmounted the sdcard numerous times. Ive reformated and deleted everything. The card has read and write access when i check info.

I have no idea what to do. Please help.

Don't mount the sdcard.Make sure recovery iimg is in the tools folder.

Check to make sure the files are labeled correctly, also. My image file was v152, not v1.5.2 as noted in the code.

In the process of doing mine now ;)

Huh, go figure I'm having my own problem with that step though. I get...

failed to copy 'recovery-RA-heroc-v152.img' to '/sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v152.img': Permission denied

The phone is not mounted, and debugging is on. Any thoughts? Can I just mount the phone quick and put the image on the sdcard myself, or no?

Okay so I type su in terminal on my mac. It asks me for a password. I tried my general computer password, but that isn't it. Not sure what password it is.

I'm an idiot. I had ejected the drive from my computer, but didn't know that I had to then unmount from the phone as well.

Hope that fixes it for me!

THat fixed it, and I'm making my Nandroid backup right now. Thanks for your help.

After the backup is completed, I want to put a copy of that on my computer for safe keeping, right? I'll need to mount the phone, transfer it, then unmount the phone?

Also, if I don't care about Apps2SD, can I bypass that step even though it's built into the ROM I plan on using ("option 4" the lite version)?

Yeah. Your don't even have to boot the phone to transfer it.
I love the USB-MS Toggle in the recovery. It mounts the sd to the computer so you can copy/paste or drag and drop as you wish.

ok. unmounted the card. reformatted it through the phone itself. debugging mode activated. now i get the same thing as mig106:

failed to copy 'recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img' to '/sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img': Permission denied

and for some reason I can't get into su mode because terminal does not accept my password. It should be the same as my user admin password, right?

:( grr

It didn't accept my admin password, either. But I got around it by unmounting the connection from both my computer and my phone (the drop down menu). Did you do both of those?

I ended up partitioning my card anyways (eh what the hell), flashed the ROM, and am in the process of setting everything back up!
