[How to] Rooting HTC EVO Froyo 2.2 (Windows)

I also just verified via terminal emulator that i do not have root access.

So to reiterate, this how I got to where I'm currently at:

- Rooted stock 2.2 phone last weekend using DJR3Z youtube videos. Worked like a charm
- read somewhere that NAND had to be unlocked to check out CM6 so I tried doing some steps from XDA forums to unlock it
- not sure how but i screwed up that process and couldn't get phone to start up again, only could get into HBOOT screen
- reapplied the PC36IMG.zip from the original root process I did over the weekend and had a working 2.1 phone with no root
- tried the 2 step simple root process to no avail

At no point did I remove or rename any files on the phone unless stated above. Will next try the 3 step simple root process (after I land from my flight later today).

When you first tried simpleroot (the 1 click version), did it at least flash the PC36IMG for you? I know you said it didn't flash a recovery but that's the second step, no mention of the first step.

Here's what i did:
- Downgraded to 2.1. No problemo took all of 5 minutes.
- Ran simpleroot 1 click and noticed that although it ran, it was unable to flash a recovery in the second step. I couldn't even flash a recovery image manually.
- Had a beer and relaxed, think i watched some kitchen nightmares
- Decided to go back to the old simpleroot (which i provided a link to a couple posts back) and it worked like a charm.

Hope this helps.

I hope someone can please help me. I'm having a problem right from the start useing the command promt. It has to with where my files are saved and what is in the command.

When I'm looking in my "C" drive in a normal windows screen. This is where my files are saved.
Computer > serial#(C: ) > android-sdk-windows > tools

My command promt looks like this
C:Users\Creag>

When I type in the command listed for the first step from the directions. The command says "The system cannot find the path specified".

I'm sure it has something to do with Users\Creag> being in my command promt. I cannot figure out how to get just C:

If I type C:\android-sdk-windows\tools. after the C:Users\Creag> I get "XXXXXXXXXXX\tools. is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."

You are not reading carefully, you have to use the change directory function.

thats what the "cd" before c:/andorid-sdk/tools is for.

if you store the files in the correct place, just copy and paste the codes.

OK Got it now. Sorry, you're right I did not read closely. Thank you for the quick reply and getting me straight.

As far as I could tell it flashed the PC36IMG for me. There weren't any error messages or anything that I noticed.

And now that I'm at my hotel ready to try the old simpleroot method you suggested, my crappy work laptop is giving me issues. It's running XP so when I plug the phone in with usb debugging on it does not recognize the device. At home my personal laptop running windows 7 would automatically find and install a driver. Should this process work with XP as well? The first click of the simpleroot gives me a "cannot find device" error message.

Oh and btw, holy crap does stock eclair suck on the EVO. I only had my phone rooted for a few days but compared to running bakedsnack I feel like I'm holding a portable windows 95 device.

Thats the one.

Yeah I did all of that on my personal laptop running windows 7.

I'm on the road now for work and I have my XP work laptop. Forgot I had to do all of that stuff. :p

Terribly slow internet connection. Taking forever to DL the zip so I'll probably wind up doing it tomorrow. Hopefully it works flawlessly. *crosses fingers*

What the heck. Downloaded and extracted the android-sdk.zip and it still won't automatically find the drivers.

Gah. I give up for tonight. Need some sleep.

for the drivers you need the latest HTC sync.

Also make sure your phone is in developer mode.

Alright. Looks like everything is set to go for me to do the simpleroot 3 step process on my rolled back 2.1 device. I'm going to have to wait until after work tonight. And any thoughts on these files on my sdcard from my previous attempts at rooting? Some people mentioned maybe renaming. But is that for all of these or just the PC36IMG?

2.2-root.zip
busybox
flash_image
mtd-eng
PC36IMG.zip
recovery
soff
unrevoked-forever.zip

Alright so it worked and I flashed baked snack.

Now how do I know if the radio needs to be updated? Is that what the "baseband version" is? Mine is at 1.36.00.04.02.

Also, what is "PRI"? Mine is 1.34_003. Does that need to be updated?

Also, the kernel says 2.6.32.15. How do I know which kernel that is? Is it baked kernel 6?

Ok. So bare with me since I seem to be the dumbest rooter alive. This is from the developer's page for baked snack:

Requirements:
rooted htc evo with full root. (nand access)
custom recovery
most recent zip file below in downloads section
The latest Wimax update : Wimax26023.zip - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download
Newest Radio From HTC : http://deck.alexauv.com/Radio-2.15.00.07.28.zip

Instructions on flashing this rom. And most others as well:
turn off your phone
hold volume down and press power button while still holding volume down
when prompted with the white screen press volume down to highlight recovery and press power to select
now using volume buttons to navigate and power to select go to wipe data/factory reset
then select wipe cache partition
now scroll down to install zip from sdcard and select
click on choose zip from sdcard
now find the rom on your sdcard and select and it will start flashing (do not mess with your phone while its flashing)
once installation is completed click go back and then click reboot system now
your rom will now run its first boot which can take anywhere from 3-6 minutes
enjoy the rom!

It mentions the latest wimax and newest radio. I don't know where in the step by step instructions I need to use those files. Do I flash those after I flash the ROM? Now that I already have baked snack installed can I just flash the wimax and radio and reboot only after both are flashed?

You don't need those files any more. Trash em

Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

After rooting is there any reason to keep any of those files on the card such as the PC36IMG.zip? At this point should I only have custom ROMs, kernels, etc on the card?
