[How to] Rooting HTC EVO Froyo 2.2 (Windows)

My unrooted Evo with FroYo was nicely configured. Now that I've completed this process it's wiped. No worries, I expected as much. I was told to take a Nandroid backup at two places in the how-to, and I did, both times. Can I use that initial backup to restore things like email settings etc?

Unfortunately, no. Nandroid makes an image of your phone's entire state. If you restore, you go back to that exact configuration: ROM, recovery, apps, settings. You can't selectively restore.

If you download Titanium backup and run it, you'll be able to do selective restores from that backup in the future. But since you need to be rooted to use Titanium, you couldn't have done it before your phone was wiped - you have to go through the one-time dues pay of manually setting up your phone again, after which you can have a backup of your settings.

Newbie here. Trying to do the root, however windows will not let me open pc36img file. Any help would be appreciated. This is the first time trying anything remotely close to this. Thanks.

When I rooted, I did not open the file. You simply place it on the SD card and android's boot program loads the image into your phone. See step 3 of the instructions on post 1

I'm up to the part on the video where you install unrevoked 3 and then boot phone into HBOOT. I can't for the life of me get into the HBOOT. I have the phone plugged in with usb debugging on, holding volume down and power and nothing happens. How long do I hold down on these? I've held them down for 30 seconds and still nothing. Am I supposed to power down the phone? Should I be in charge mode? Disk drive mode?

I am using that video to go through this process. Still can't get the HBOOT screen to show up.

I just started rooting, total noob, but did my research. Programming is not a skill of mine, failed java in college. However, I successfully (I think) completed all steps up to "adb push mtd-eng.img /sdcard/". It says failed to copy, permission denied.

Crap, I think I may have a bigger problem as I'm typing this. I hit up arrow to and enter accidentally and pushed the rageagainstthegage file again. So I sent it twice! Please Help!

I just have bad luck. I am running win 7 on Fusion with my mac. I can't even push the first 4 files. I keep getting error: device not found. I am in USB debugging, the files are in the right place, and I am in charge only. Help.

You can get it directly from the dev's site found HERE

Thanks but I now have a major issue.

Rooted my stock 2.2 over the weekend using the DJR3Z youtube videos. Everything worked fine except apparently this method did not unlock NAND which I wanted so that I could test out CM6. Was directed by someone in the XDA forums to do some steps to unlock NAND and whatever I did messed up my phone. I couldn't get out of the HBOOT screens no matter what I tried and nandroid restores would not work. I tried taking the battery out, rebooted several times, etc. I have no idea how I screwed up.

That particular process for getting NAND unlocked involved adding a different PC36IMG.zip so maybe I did something wrong there. So in my freakout I pulled the sdcard and reapplied the PC36IMG from the root process I followed the other day and installed the card back into the phone. I am able to reboot now and it looks like I have 2.1 (build 1.47.651.1) with 1.34 PRI installed and it seems to be unrooted (I don't see superuser in the app drawer). Should this simple root process work at this stage? Would I need to delete any of the files on the sdcard that were used in the original root process I used the other day?

I leave for a business trip this afternoon and need my phone to be working (GPS, etc. needed). I don't want to screw up anything more than it is now.

1) Just because the ROM doesn't have SU doesnt mean you're not rooted. Grab Android Terminal Emulator from the market. Launch it and type:

su [enter]
The screen should return with a # symbol. that means you're rooted.

2) Instead of deleting the PC36IMG from the card, just rename it for now. You might want to keep that on their for a little bit until you have everything sorted out as a precautionary measure.

3) You should be ok to run simpleroot now. No harm in giving it a try. It will let you know if something isnt right

Hope this helps.

Just tried doing the simple root and cannot get the recovery part to work. Keep getting a screen with a red triangle. I'll try scouring the thread for solutions.

Also grabbed terminal emulator but it keeps force closing so I can't tell if the root worked.

*sigh*

Not getting much help from the simple root boards on this issue. Would it be best to redo the root process I did over the weekend using the DJR3Z videos?

I'm just lost right now and don't know what else to try. Gah.

I recommend to at least renaming them. Removing the would be ideal imo
