The "Always On" lock screen options show clock with icons for email and messages below them. But my phone doesn't have them - just the clock and battery status. So other than blue flashing LED no indication of a new message. Is there a way of seeing a visual icon that shows an email has been received? Also, something on the home page - ideally a message preview?

Try this. Go to settings > display > always on display > layouts and turn on show notifications.

As far as the home page message preview, you can add a widget for the app you are using which will usually show message previews.

I loaded an app called "SMS popup" and after a bit of playing with the notification setting it perfectly does the trick. Yayyy!

Hey so I've had an issue where my lock screen icons we're showing up from the beginning, now nothing. Curious thing is I saw how to change that setting like you mentioned above before, but now the "layouts" option is no longer there. Any clue?

I'm on the S8+ and having the same issue. Notifications quit showing and lay-out option isn't a choice.

In Lock Screen and Security, if you have Screen Lock Type turned to "none" it will not show those icons. I am not sure why and i think it is counterintuitive but...
