[How-To] Simplified UNROOT and return to STOCK

That was the problem he was having, the fact that the phone isn't active. Now, with my phone, I won't want to do the 786 reset b/c I'm still using it and don't want to delete my personal info. I guess that's why he suggested taking it to the store so they can manually do it from there, plugging it into their system. But, I'll try calling back again today and see if I get different results/info. In the end, if I can't get the cell # removed before selling it, it's not a big deal. I've sold phones in the past that were used on this line and didn't think to check and see if the # was removed. I just happened to check this time and wanted to try removing it. The big deal is that it's unrooted............AND IT WAS SUPER EASY TO DO! Once again, thank you sooooooo much for the easy instructions. I've read other threads on how to do this and was a bit hesitant on moving forward, but when I saw this update, it looked too good to be true - but it IS good and it IS true! :D

Ok, it was too good to be true to be able to unroot my phone as easy as my husband's.

At step 3, applying sdcard update.zip, I'm getting error messages failed to open update zip no such file or directory and signature verification failed. I went back and made sure I unzipped both recovery/update files to the sdcard and where do I check the signature verification?

Did you remember to perform all of step #2?
It sounds like you still have a "custom recovery" on your phone rather than the stock recovery which should have been installed during step #2.

Yes, I used the adb shell (3rd option) and it booted to the recovery page on the phone just fine. I did everything just as I did with the first phone. Gonna try steps 1 and 2 again....

Edit: Tried again and still getting error messages.
Edit again: Unzipped both files, again, to sdcard. Unplugged phone from pc, rebooted phone, plugged it back up to the pc, performed terminal steps - installed -vd file - "done", rebooted to recovery screen, scrolled to option 2 install from sdcard.......STILL GETTING ERROR MESSAGES! ugghh

Well, you can tell them you are doing the ##786# reset and have them give you the 6-digit MSL, but not perform the ##786# right that instant, instead choosing to do it later on.

Also, if you want a "lesser" NVRAM reset that doesn't erase your filesystem data, you can do a ##72786# reset. That will leave your Android user data but cause your phone to reset NVRAM and reprovision itself.

Can you read the microsd card on a PC and do an md5sum on update.zip? See if it matches what is in the first post.

Also can you verify your "recovery" screen looks like the picture in this post:

You can get a PC md5 tool here:
SlavaSoft FSUM - Fast File Integrity Checker

I wouldn't worry too much. I'm sure this is a simple issue that isn't immediately obvious.

Yes, I can read the sdcard on a pc and will attempt the md5sum on update.zip.

Yes, the recovery screen looks like the picture in the post.

And, I'm sure it's something easy (probably stupid on my part) that's preventing me from finishing. :p

BTW next time you get the error can you post it word for word. Not all errors are created the same :) Just the error message description itself. Don't worry about seemingly random letters and #s that might accompany the message.

The md5sum confused the crap outta me....

Error messages:...
Finding update...
Open update...
Verifying update...
E:failed to open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory)
E:signature verification failed

Installation aborted.

in cmd prompt, you type:

fsum [filename]

and it spits out a long sequence of letters/numbers.

It is basically the DNA sequence of the file. If it matches, then the file is not corrupted.

Your error message though seems to indicate it can't find the file, which is either a file renaming problem or problem with the sdcard not being mounted or not being seen. However, sometimes the error messages are a red-herring and it could be complaining about something else and this is just the default message.

How did you "copy" the file to the sdcard and could you verify you actually have an sdcard present? Also could you turn of USB storage mode before you boot into recovery?

How did you "copy" the file to the sdcard....

HA!! I told you it was gonna be a stupid user error!! I went back and physically copied both .zip files onto the sdcard (uh, yeah, kinda like the instructions clearly state in step 1). Before, I just unzipped the files onto the card, and didn't place the actual .zip file on it. LOLOL! Stoopid me......so, now I'm moving forward (I knew I should've gone to the gym first this morning to wake up my brain cells). :-!

(hate step 4 - so uncoordinated rt now!) hehe

It's completed and I'm back to setting up the phone (emails, contacts, etc). So, it's unrooted AND still works. lol

Can't say thank you enough!

Well, I will tell you the simple, stupid mistakes I made that made this process take longer than it should. This might help some of the noobies doing this:

1. Make sure you turn off usb storage AFTER unzipping/moving files to sdcard and BEFORE you begin the terminal process. (duh...ha!)

2. Make sure you not only unzip the files to the sdcard, but MOVE the .zip file to the sdcard (clearly stated in step 2, but the first time I didn't unzip the 2nd file, then I forgot to move the 2nd .zip file to the sdcard).

3. I know this is stated in the directions as well, but I still effed up at this point. After you unplug the usb, make sure the phone is powered completely off BEFORE attempting the 3-button recovery start up (PWR/VOL DWN/HOME).

Just saying....I could handle the 'hard' stuff - it was the 'easy' things that I forgot to do! lol

HA! Awesome!! Yeah, those little side notes would've helped me from making very simple mistakes. For some people, those little things would just come to their mind naturally; for noobies and those who might be intimidated or scared to do this, these instructions might make them feel a bit more comfortable diving in and just doing it.

Also, some people might not know how to get to or where the top tier of the sdcard is located. Not sure if you wanted to do it, but maybe throw in an image so they can see where it's located in relation to my computer, the c: drive, and whatever drive their sdcard would be (for me it was e: ).

But, again, your instructions were way more easier to understand and follow than other threads I've seen, and, if I'm not mistaken, you had something different before (?). I had bookmarked this thread so when I was ready to do it, I could find this particular one, but I thought there was more to it than there is now. Again, awesome write up and thank you ever so much!

As more tools become available to us, the instructions can be simplified. We never had a ZVD revert update.zip before so there was another tool that basically what you mentioned above.

I was actually thinking about creating an automated tool to do this, but don't have an Optimus to test stuff on. Would you be interested in testing something like that?

You're asking me, 2 left thumbs, to test something? lol One phone isn't activated, so that wouldn't work. My phone IS working, but I'd be scared of bricking it. :-! Besides, how much more simpler could these instructions get - other than download xx.zip and watch it work. hehe
