how to: turn off LTE

I used this app today.. worked great.

Last friday my battery was violated in the mouth because at work I'm right on the edge of a 4g area. So my phone kept going back and forth 4g to 3g. I turned LTE off and battery life was much better.

Also of note... Out of curiosity I tried turning it to LTE ONLY to see if it would force it to stay on 4g. It worked great. I know have a solid 2-3 bars of LTE at work and by setting it at 4g only it stays pegged. Solid 12 down all day.

The bad thing is at times it would lose 4g and drop down to 1x (certain spots of the building) so I probably will run with 3g only most of the time but it's nice to know I can force 4g when I need it or want it.

So why not just add a widget for the mobile network?

Widgets>Settings>Mobile Network
Because instead of simply falling back to 3g it would disconnect you completely from the cellular network using that widget. The Phone Info app seems like the easiest solution. Basically set it to Phone Info/Preferred Network Type/EVDO Only. Knock around on 3g until you really want 4g and then toggle it back on - it takes about 5 seconds. Nice workaround until the power consumption thing is fixed via update...

How sure are we that they will fix via OTA?

Wait now 4G just said to use CDMA auto.

So when we go into the menu what should we switch the option to? Cdma auto? I'm in a solid 3g area with no 4g near

Yes this app Phone Info by sc@tawain is the one I orginally posted a few days ago in the Tips & Tricks thread, congrats on the tutorial thou!

I'm glad to hear that some people are getting awesome results after turning LTE off. You guys are all welcome and Cheers!

to buy or not to buy

ok guys i am going tomorrow to verizon. just wondering if i should go with the tb or something different. i am coming from the incredible. the battery life is a concern to me. did the switch off of LTE really help that much?

Hey All,
So I've tried this trick by selecting CDMA Auto PRL but every time it bumps me from LTE to 1X. No 3G shows up when selecting CDMA Auto PRL. Anyone else having this issue? Also, just in general I've noticed many locations in my building at work where I use to get 3G all the time on my BB Storm and now I only ever get 1X on the thunderbolt unless I'm right next to the Window or outside. Seems like I'm having some major reception issues.

EDIT
So after making the above change, I had to restart the phone. Then it connected to 3G no problem. I then tried going back to LTE and then 3G again and no problems. I guess I just needed that one restart. I still don't get 3G in locations I easily did before on my Storm though.

Thanks for all of the info in this thread. I just installed phone info and set it to LTE (while at work) and now I get 2 bars at WORK! It was constantly switching between 3g, rarely 4g, and no signal. I wish they would add this to Timeriffic so I could do this automatically on a schedule.

Has anyone that has tried this observed better battery life yet? I am not in a 4G area but wanted to try this to see if helped my terrible battery life.

Try Tasker. That app is only limited by what you program it to do. It is a BEAST!

It has a bit of a step learning curve, but nothing that a "Puterguru" couldn't pick up. :-)

The phone is still new... give it some time.. app developers should have something out soon for toggling the network signal.. or maybe Verizon will release an update and add this feature.

Awesome, I'm going to try that. I'm going to also try email the dev's of Timeriffic.

I assume the 'Mobile' widget turns off the radios, right?

Most of the time, I'm at home or work on WiFi. I have the 'Mobile' square widget that I grabbed. I assume that by toggling that off, I am actually turning off ALL the radios thus helping to conserve as much battery as possible, right?

Phone calls and text messages work fine in/out so I'm simply turning off all the data radios, right?
