Okay guys. I realized typing on a software keyboard meant many mistakes for me. I'd probably get used to it, but it's still quite frustrating.
One of the coolest features about Android was the voice to text. I was disappointed at first cause it wasn't recognizing what I was saying. I realized just now that I was doing it all wrong.
First, to actually make the voice to text practical:
1. Get HTC IME Keyboard (Download: HTC IME Keyboard v19 | Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog or search for the latest one via google).
2. Make sure HTC Ime keyboard is checked in language and keyboard.
3. After getting it installed, go to HTC IME settings-->Text Input-->Make sure "Disable Capitilization" feature isn't checked.
4. Then go back, and go to gestures--> make one of the gestures "Voice Input". I did swipe right.
5. Go to a message. Tap and hold text box--> Input method--> HTC IME.
Okay and you're set. Just swipe right (or whatever gesture you put.. or tap microphone) to get voice command up. It should now capitilize the first letter of the first word for you.
1. Do NOT talk like a robot, or slow down words a lot.
2. Avoid contractions... don't --> do not, can't --> cannot
3. Conversate to the phone. Speak like you would to another person, but be distinct enough.
I use this all the time now. My accuracy shot up when I didn't try to speak to it like it was dumb. It can recognize conversational tone and does a great job. Just avoid contractions. Also, "comma" and "period" are "," and "." respectively. It can recognize that.
So there's a newbie's guide to the voice command feature.
Those who came from a Palm Pre can miss the hardware keyboard sometimes. It made things easier sometimes (except sliding it up, ugh). This should make texting/searching a breeze though.
It can't get everything right, but it's a great replacement. I've tried Better Keyboard, Smart Keyboard, Sense Keyboard, Swipe, Shapewriter, and they were all kind of meh for me. Some worked well sometimes but were not the best all the time. So now I just use the HTC_IME keyboard and whenever I want to do hands free texting I use voice command with that keyboard's great capitilization feature.
Edit: Probably wrong forum. I posted here cause I have an Evo and I know a lot of people came from hardware keyboards (blackberry + palm pre).
