I cannot get to download mode. I see "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again". This is not possible w/o a code. There must be a way to restore from this issue. Please advise. Thank you!

This happen to me awhile back and what I did was:
Open Kies.
Make sure your phone is connected to USB in Back of PC.
Select Tools.
From Drop Down Menu-Select "Emergency Firmware recovery"
Then follow the on screen instruction. It will ask for Model number and Serial Number located under the battery..
Maybe someone else has a better way I'm new to all this.
It worked for me Good Luck.
This should bring you back to 2.3.5 then you can do OTA to 2.3.6.

Thanks so much for this. I tried to update my skyrocket to the new ICS they just pushed out. My Kies software froze during install and bricked my phone. I was right about to go to the ATT store when I stumbled on this post.

Again, Thanks a lot. I really appreciate the time and effort you guys put in!

What do you do if Kies does not recognize your device while it is showing the above mentioned situation?

I tried to upgrade to ICS on my skyrocket sgh-i727 and it failed
i had unlocked my phone earlier and it was rooted

I am not sure if usb debugging was on or not when i was upgrading to ics using kies


now it only shows the following screen

Current Binary: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL

I tried recovering it using Kies but it did not work,
Then I tried to use ODIN to upgrade firmware, but my phone doesnt go in download mode at all:
(steps for download mode: press volume up and down simultaneously and plug in the USB -- It comes with a message
A custom OS can cause critical problems in phone and installed applications
If you want to download custom OS, press the volume up key, otherwise press the volume down key to cancel.
I press volume up and it again goes back to the same screen - ODIN MODE)
ODIN recognizes my phone (i get a yellow indicator on com5).
I tried to push a tar without the download mode on my phone and it gets stuck on Setup Connection

Please help

How long should it take writing the system image? Mine has been going for almost an hour now. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So I tried your method but Odin said it failed and the message was:

<ID:0/004>
<ID:0/004> Complete(Write) operation failed.

I think the problem was I wasn't able to actually get the phone (SGH-I727R) to go to download mode, its stuck in Odin mode and says there was a firmware upgrade issue...

The phone has been previously rooted and CWM recovery is installed

Please Help!!
