HP tablet for Android

Is anyone gonna root and flash Android on the HP tablet? Is the hardware right? I'm seeing them for $100 already.

Amazon still has them at the old price, but virtually everywhere else has the 16GB version for $99 and the 32GB for $149.

I picked up two 32 GB yesterday at Walmart and just ordered two more through Best Buy, $150 each. I couldn't find any of the 16 GB models. If you can find them you can't beat the prices right now.

FYI Android is coming to the HP touchpad, it's only a matter of time. There is already a dev team assembled at rootzwiki. The hardware is almost exactly the same an other devices already on the market and the thing isn't locked down at all.

OVERVIEW
We are attempting to port Android to the HP Touchpad, which was originally shipped with webOS.
First going to build with Gingerbread and be AOSP based
After we are able to successfully boot Android, we are going to move to a CM7 base
Once we reach what we deem a "stable" beta, we will continue to provide bug fixes for Gingerbread build, but also begin working on a full Honeycomb port
If ICS is released before or during our development of the Honeycomb port, we will stop and begin work on ICS. (Please be October?)

Why not work on fine-tuning webOS?

This TouchPad really intrigues me at this price. But why doesn't someone work on finetuning the current OS? When I heard how easy multitasking is where you flick to switch apps, I was quite interested but reviews on hardware were lousy which brings up another point that someone just mentioned: the specs on the hardware are as up to date as anything else out there except for the camera yet it was slower than ipad2 running webOS so is the hardware simply not tuned into the software or vice versa?

From what I've seen of Android, its really not that different than iOS and I don't know why people waste time debating the two; its the same push the icon button and launch an app, click button below to close current app and launch different app routine. Even Google wanting to revamp the OS with a button-less Nexus Prime to work ICS so they are essentially wanting to take webOS idea, am I not right? So hopefully, some smart guys out there can fine-tune the current device the way it is and not just slam a different OS on it.

It's not just a matter of fine tuning the device. I've got nothing against WebOS, in fact I like it quite a bit. I could even live with it being a little slower than Android if it wasn't for the fact that no one is going to develop for the platform anymore. HP is out of the game with nothing but bugfixes to look forward to so unless this fire sale was some last ditch effort to gain market share and resurrect the platform you are never going to see the amount of APP development needed to keep the WebOS platform viable. Even if it does jump start the WebOS user base WebOS is still 2 years behind in app development. Sorry but what apps you have now are pretty much what you have to live with on WebOS. An Android port will bring more performance and a ton more apps that are already developed. Apps that will make the touchpad more than the glorified ereader it is now. It's sad to see all the potential WebOS had go to waste but that's a free market for you.

I agree getting one is a risk but at $99, I'm okay with it being just a web browser and ereader unless the hardware is really so horrendous that it constantly reboots or something. I haven't even seen webOS in person, so I'm just commenting from what I saw during my Android experience and I didn't see that much more those things can do than apple iOS. Your point about no future development is of course irrefutable if the company frankly stated they are shutting it down. But no device is capable of operating system upgrades forever; these things probably will last one major update, maybe two. I know everyone is different, but I don't play games and find "apps" to be gimmicky; I don't see what you couldn't do just through the web browser especially at 10 inches of screen. Many of these "apps" really are just a desktop shortcut to a mobile version of something lame. Anyway, just playing devils advocate to all those who love Android out there.

I got one just to play around with and i must say webos is actually pretty cool. Not as awesome as honeycomb but i was impressed with my 99 dollar purchase
