So I finally received my new, unlocked HTC 10 yesterday and have had 24 hours to play around with it. My initial impression is that this is a really good device. I have been using a Galaxy S7 since its release, but I was very intrigued by the HTC 10 when it was announced. I have always liked HTC devices for their build quality, but the cameras were always the sore point. With that said, here are my initial thoughts on the device versus my S7. I am on the fence as to which device to stick with.

Battery Life: Both have the same size battery, but so far the battery life on the HTC 10 has been much better than the S7. I had almost 5 hours of SOT on the HTC 10, and that is amazing considering I was setting up the phone, downloading apps, playing around with settings, etc. I have never come close to that on the S7. Both phones have the same apps downloaded and all of the settings are the same. HTC 10 wins big in this department for me.

UI: I really like HTC's approach with the 10. It is almost stock Android with a little bit of HTC Sense mixed in. The UI is very light and fluid. Touchwiz on the S7 has gotten much better, but there is still the occasional hiccup where a little bit of lag occurs. Overall, Touchwiz has been pretty good for me on the S7, but I really like the UI on the HTC 10. Another win for the HTC 10.

Build: Both devices are really well built. I like the metal design that HTC uses, and it is really well refined on the 10. It feels good in the hand which is really important to me when using a smartphone. I am not one for using cases as it hides a lot of the design. However, I do prefer the S7 over the HTC 10 in this category. I don't care about the glass on the back of the S7 as I put on a brand skin. The S7 feels better in the hand to me than the 10, so Samsung wins this round.

Screen: Both screens are sharp and colorful. This is where personal preference comes in. Some prefer AMOLED, some LCD. Both screens on these devices look great. The only issue I see is that the HTC 10 is not as bright as the S7. I'm calling this one a tie.

Fingerprint: Both devices work well, but I really like the capacitive home button on the HTC 10, and the fingerprint reader is slightly quicker and more accurate than the S7. Some of the reviews I have seen on the 10 complain about the home button placement and the way the fingerprint reader works, but I have not experienced any issues with the 10. The S7 also works well for me, but I prefer the capacitive style. I'm going with the HTC 10.

Intangibles: This is an area where I have to lean toward the S7, and this again comes down to personal preference. If I were to keep the HTC 10 and get rid of the S7, there are two things that I would really miss on the S7: Samsung Pay and wireless charging. For many, Samsung Pay is not a big deal, and those people are fine taking out their wallets and using a physical card. For me, Samsung Pay is super convenient, and it has worked every time I have used it. I use it all of the time. I know there is Android Pay on the HTC 10, but it doesn't work everywhere, and the selection of banks and cards is terrible. Google has some work to do there. I also love wireless charging. I have two chargers in my home - one in the bedroom on my nightstand, and one in my family room on an end table. It's really convenient to just drop the phone on the charger and not have to worry about plugs or wires. I do however like the fact that HTC went with USB-C on the 10. It charges super-quick, but I'm still partial to wireless charging.

Camera: I haven't played around enough with the HTC 10 yet. I have taken some pics and videos, and for the most part the camera seems pretty good. I need some more time with the 10 to make a decision, but it has pretty tough competition to live up to with the S7. The S7 has been excellent in the time that I have had the device. I'm not a huge picture person or camera nut, so I won't get in to which camera's photos are warmer, over-saturated, etc. I just want a device that takes good pics when I need it, and I think both devices can do that. I have a family trip next week in Disney World, so I am on the fence as to which device to use.

Overall, I am really pleased with the HTC 10. If I can get past the wireless charging and the Samsung Pay, I might actually keep it. Has anyone else made the jump from an S7 to the 10?

Good comparison. I have the S7 Edge (and G5) and am trying out the 10. I agree with you about Samsung Pay and wireless charging. Really miss them.

The feel, build and ease of use is much better with the 10 than the Edge. The 10 is much faster than the S7 Edge. The G5 feels the best.

I have to disagree on the screen. The Samsung screen is quite a bit better. It is also tough to get used to the smaller screen on the 10. It is nice to have a smaller device in the pocket and in the hand. I miss the always on display from the S7 and the G5.

I like the fingerprint reader on the 10 and hate the home button on the S7 Edge. The G5 has the best fingerprint reader.

I will have to use the 10's camera after now getting the update. I took a few pix in low light before the update and they were not good. Took the same pix with the G5 and the G5 really showed how poorly the 10 did. That is in addition to getting the laser auto focus error and it having trouble focusing even when I did it manually. Hopefully, the update will help the 10.

I really like the stock email, calendar, phone and contacts apps from Samsung. They are important to me for work (Exchange) and I rely on them heavily. The HTC apps are really not good. They have not been updated for many years and really show how outdated they are. There are many apps in the app store, but they never integrate as well as the stock apps. It also looks as if video calling is not an option with the stock dialer on AT&T like it is with the stock dialer for the S7 Edge and G5. I know I can use Hangouts (or other apps), but that is a disappointment.

I am undecided about keeping the 10. I will have to use it and see how it grows on me after a week or so. I did that with the G5 and was surprised how much more I ended up liking it after using it. I do not even want to go back to using the S7 Edge.

I have the S7e and I think, after about 4 days with the HTC 10 that I will be making the HTC 10 my permanent phone. Wireless charging I really couldn't give a rats arse about. All I need is my USB cable to charge while at my laptop and of course the power unit for quick charge. Seeing as I am getting through a full day easy on battery the quick charge should be fine for topping up the phone when needed.

Samsung pay is cool, I'll give it that, but I wouldn't say I'd miss it. Pull the phone out of my pocket to pay, or pull my ATM/Credit card out to pay! What's the difference really at the end of the day?

Both are great phones. The S7e has better battery life but it does have a bigger battery. What I am getting from the HTC 10 is more than adequate. The edge screen was a little annoying and too many ghost touches on the edge. Also, the finger print scanner on the HTC 10 is better and quicker. Was starting to get a lot of mis scans on the S7e.

I had my M8 for 2 years so know these phones will last and still be snappy. HTC 10 all the way :)

I'm actually making my comparison to the S7. I had the S7e and returned it because of the accidental touches to the edge.

You are right, there isn't much difference between taking out your wallet or phone, but my phone is typically always in my hand more than my pocket. I want to spend more time with the 10 to make my decision.

If I am in a shop my phone is pretty much in my pocket..that said, I do see so many people walking around with their phones glued to their hands. Mine isn't which is perhaps a reason why Samsung pay is not that big a deal breaker.

I saw that your comparison was with the S7, but I thought I would add my 2 cents re the S7 Edge, since they are similar. I did not mean to hijack the thread.

No worries. They are basically the same. Bigger screen and battery is about the only difference. The brightness factor between the S7 and the 10 is significant.

I've used both S7s, the G5, and now the HTC 10. This is the phone I'm sticking with. I actually liked the G5 better than the S7/edge. For the, the glass back is a deal breaker. I don't use skins because it ruins the look and feel of the phone to me, makes it feel like my $700+ device is covered in a cheap sticker. And they can't be reused. I always buy cases but rarely use them. But they're there and can be put on when needed, and removed when not.

Display and cameras are great on Samsung but to me it's all downhill from there. Display and cameras are also great on the 10, and difference is only noticeable when comparing side by side. As for wireless charging it's actually a deal breaker for me if a phone DOES have it. For one I don't like that I can't use the phone while it's charging. The bigger issue though is that in order to achieve wireless charging there build material can't be metal. I don't do glass or plastic.

How does the audio compare on M8 vs M10?
Are you happy with the M10 having the bottom speaker?

I wouldn't really listen to music out the speakers, but phone quality has been fine. With good headphones.. Wow, this thing is amazing.

Speaker audio on the m8 is hands down better. Plug in some headphones or an aux cable to the car stereo and the 10 leaves the m8 behind.

2 front facing speakers make a world of difference! Personally, I thought the M7 and M9 were best followed by the M8. The 10 sounds fine, but it's definitely not as loud playing from the phone speakers.

My sentiments pretty much exactly. I had the S6 and just do not get the glass back attraction. Metal seems more premium to me.

Thank you i was looking for that answer. I often like to listen to music on my phone but dont want to plug in to listen to stuff.

I am pretty disappointed with the speakers tbh. HTC was marketing "Bringing the Boom" and sure, with headphones it sounds great. But without, the 6P, Moto X Pure, and my old M7 (I never used the M8 or M9) sounded better. Too bad.

The speakers seem a step backwards then if they can't do better than the m7 or m8 both of which I had and liked to listen to music thru them. Also, ringtones and anything else coming thru the speakers sounded great. Seems the 10 should have improved in this regard.

The G5 is incredibly fast.

Look at comments when the M8 and M9 came out and you'll see all kinds of complaining about screen-to-surface-area ratio and the sizes of bezels. Any design will be a compromise leaving some people unhappy. Speakers on the Nexus 6P are said to distort. The One M phones had larger chambers to allow for more resonance, but they took up more space. But we had people excited about renders that literally had USB ports sticking straight into speakers, pretending that was something that could be engineered.

HTC should hire the designer of these M9 renders

It must be a bit depressing to work for any of these companies and read the comments.

the funny thing is when current m7-m9 users were making a big deal about the speakers so many ppl were commenting about how speakers didn't matter bc only "jerks" listen to their phones without earphones, but now htc removed the dual ffs so many ppl are complaining that it isn't as "in your face" (pun intended) as before... htc just can't win lol

this isn't directed at the OP but i've been reading so many threads on different forums about ppl who switched to the 10 from other phones and it's like they are searching for what is wrong with the phone instead just enjoying it...so many ppl seem to be trying to put the phone through these tests of things that aren't everyday usage activities hoping/waiting to find it's fault
