HTC 10 vs. Samsung Galaxy S7

The difference with a regular LCD is simply out of this world and I wouldn't go back to LCD, ever. It's hard for me to even watch content on regular TVs anymore, once you get used to the backlight not being there, you can't just unsee it when it is. Folks saying they don't notice much difference between the two technologies, well, they must be watching their content in full daylight. Otherwise, it's simply night and day.

Am I the only one that doesn't think like this? I prefer the S7 over the 10 for other reasons, but for years I've used AMOLED devices and LCD always feels better to my eyes when I go back - and the same applies to the S7 I have now. In some scenarios it looks nicer, but for basic UI stuff (the majority of what I do on a phone), it feels so cartoon-like and light backgrounds always look inconsistent compared to a good LCD panel. I don't hate it by any means, but can't figure out why I seem to be in the minority in not preferring it.

I'm with you. I also prefer LCD and feel like something must be wrong with my eyes for preferring it. I love using the screen on the s7, but same as you I know when I see the HTC 10 in person my eyes will like it better. Wondering if it's because I do more reading and web stuff on my phones and less games and videos. *shrug*

I'm the same way. I don't game at all and rarely watch videos on my phones. So maybe there is some correlation there...

Well the same kind of fragility arguments can be aimed at HTC 10 too. The phone uses Gorilla Glass 3, not 4; so therefore whilst the rear of the phone may be less susceptible to shattering, the front display is more so.

Any idea why they would go with 3 and not 4? Cost issue, or is there a pro to using 3 that it might actually have over the newer version?

Yes 3 is more scratch resistant than 4.

I see. So 3's pro is greater scratch resistance and the 4's pro is less likely to shatter? If that's the case, I am glad they went 3 since scratches are more worrisome for someone like me. And if I do happen to shatter the screen (which I haven't done to a phone since the Samsung Galaxy Nexus), I have uh oh to back me up.

Okay i just preordered the HTC 10 from Verizon and i was seriously contemplating between these two phones. Here is the reason i chose the HTC 10 over the S7 edge (not even considering the s7 because that phone looks like a chode)..... so putting specs where both HTC 10 and S7 edge are the same aside, i chose HTC 10 because:

1. Design (the black front with silver back just pops and looks AMAZING).
2. Build Quality: Metal > Glass (more durable, no fingerprints, still feels premium)
3. Not an edge screen. (I do not use the edge, and I prefer glass screen protectors which you cannot use on the s7 edge, I would hate to use a plastic cover (completely takes away the feel of the screen) and I also HATE scratches and i buy and sell phones so my next consumer would hate a scratched screen!)
4. Feel in the hand (the edges on the back of the HTC 10 are so smooth, it sits wonderfully in the hand)
5. HTC Sense OVER Touchwiz (i hate touchwiz, nothing else more to say, #bloatcity)
6. Type C charging, FASTEST CHARGING EVER and its innovative all phones will have it soon
7. Selfie camera, i do not like the samsung front camera & the new OIS on the front camera on the HTC 10 is fireeee.
8. SPEAKERS

Things i love about the s7 edge:
1. that damn silver color is beautiful
2. Size, its the perfect size, not too big not too small
3. Waterproof (thats just amazing) (speakers take a hit though)
4. SAMSUNG PAY
5. Screen resolution (its just the best out there no debates)

I see a major failing in pretty much all reviews of the Galaxy S7, especially as compared to the HTC 10.

They all praise the build of the phone, and its great glass, front and back. However, glass breaks easily. For that reason, I consider putting glass on the back of a phone a rather foolish design decision. I've never owned a phone I haven't dropped, some badly. Now, you can either put a case on the S7, in which case its glorious build quality is irrelevant. Or, you can wait until you drop it, then fork out the money for a new one while admiring the glass back in the meantime.

The HTC 10 has a metallic back. That design makes sense. What was Samsung thinking? Did a committee sit around a table and say "I know! Let's put glass over all of it! Well, maybe not the edges, that's too fragile. We'll offer that as an option!"

But hey, it's waterproof!

Well the only to have wireless charging and water resistance is either to have a glass or a plastic back. Metal is not an option. Plus everyone uses a case now a days.

Hmmm that's the first time I've heard that GG4 is not quite as scratch resistant as GG3. That's a darn shame. Like you, I value scratch resistance more than shatter resistance (because I very rarely drop my phone onto carpet and soft surfaces, let alone concrete). Oh well, my S7 is still without a scratch after almost two months of ownership, hope it stays that way *knock on wood*.

Still, glass back offers a few objective advantages such as wireless charging compatibility, better thermal conduction behaviour (i.e. less heat transferred to the user's palm, therefore thermal throttling of the CPU can be more lenient in glass and plastic devices vs metal ones) and the lack of a requirement for plastic antenna bands on the rear of the phone (though I admit that this last point can easily be countered by the issue of fingerprints with glass backs).

I have a lovely leather case on my S7 which doesn't bother me as I'd feel the need for a case if I were to get the HTC 10 too. There's no objective winner in all categories between metal and glass but I admit that I'd personally prefer metal myself - and I'm saying that as a happy S7 owner :)

Wireless charging is now possible with metal phones, though granted it's harder to implement. As far as thermal characteristics, metal conducts it best, but that means you're sucking the heat out of the phone...isn't that a good thing?

The tradeoff is that you need antenna bands...though for some reason the glass-backed Galaxies have antenna bands around the edges anyway. :) Personally, I don't like the glass backs, tried them on the GS6 and Xperia Z3. They just feel too fragile. I'd actually rather have milled polycarbonate, it feels both more susbstantial and more durable.

Anyway, this is more of an opinion thing, to each their own. For me, Milled Poly > Metal > Wood > Glass > Shiny Plastic. That's my own personal opinion, of course.

There is a downside. It means that the thermal throttling applied to a SOC needs to be more aggressive than with glass/plastic/other to prevent the phone feeling too warm in the palm. So to provide, say for example, an average external temperature of 30°C you'd need to throttle down the processor more with a metal phone as metal conducts the heat to the skin more readily.

Maybe in the 10 forums, LOL.

Anyway my girl decided on the S7 Edge. Physically it is similar in size to the 10, which is incidentally similar in size to her M8 and the bigger screen called to her. My S7 is much smaller than all of them. She loves the vibrancy of amoled and kind of got spoiled by looking at my S7 all the time. She still prefers there design of her M8 over either phone, actually. Guess the 10 didn't wow her enough. Plus the battery life of the edge will serve her better.

Based on all the tests that I've seen, the SD 820 on the HTC 10 competes greatly in ram management/multitasking and performance/speed as the Exynos chip in the international SGS7/e (unlike the chip in the USA galaxy s7) --> for example, it doesn't close apps when switching between them when multitasking. This phone is extremely powerful and people are heaving undermining a product that is barely even released. Software updates are coming and performance will improve even more.

So I just got a Galaxy S7 after 3 years with an old first generation HTC One, which I loved! First thing I noticed with the S7, the sound SUCKS. I can barely hear my bf on the line, he says he can barely hear me on the other end still using his old HTC One. When calling robots I can hear ok, it's clearly not like a defect in the phone, just ****ty.

Reading what ppl are saying about the touch experience or the way my finger registers on the screen, I think you're right, HTC touch interface felt more responsive. Sometimes the S7 doesn't get my finger and I don't really like the keyboard as much...

This phone came with a VR headset for free! But...meh. So I have to spend more money on any real games all ****ty first-generation technology that's going to get obsolete fast!

I also read that the waterproof is kind of bs and if I'm paying for the drops and spills coverage, who cares?

Wireless charging... also meh, so I have to buy a device to wireless charge my phone! What's the boon exactly?

AND,
O yeah, not a huge deal, but my HTC took any android wire for charging no prob. Samsung won't work with the cheap $ store android wires only certain nicer ones and its own. Which is really inconvenient when it comes down to it.

So, I would like to take it all back to Best Buy, and sign up for the HTC 10 deal with the same price with ATT before my 14 day trial period is up. This samsung is with Verizon, who I've been with this whole time. But they don't let their workers unionize... so....I'm ready to move on.
