HTC 10 vs. Samsung Galaxy S7

The 10 is very tempting but I have a feeling HTC is going to drop another big bang by the 3rd or 4th Qt to keep up with the Iphone 7s or whatever other high end competition is dropping at the time. I'll just wait another 3 or 4 months before I make my decision.

I took a couple of night time landscape shots with my S7e at the weekend and to be honest, when looking on the computer at the picture quality and I have to say that the black sky is way too noisy. Now, let me just state that I really don't use my camera for taking photos unless my wife wants something taking. For my photos I'll use a proper camera and perhaps I have just become to used to how well the newer DLSRs shot at high ISO will little noise. The night photos I took on the S7e will be trashed.

I have not tried to take day time photos with the phone yet but I suspect it will be fine for that.

The choice is really subjective.

What do you identify as important features/aspects of a phone. What do you like/don't like about either phone.

Both phones are great and I doubt many people would be disappointed with either.

Re: HTC 10 or Samsung Galaxy S7

Personally....after I look at the specs on a phone....I head over to my local carrier and play with them first....many MANY phones were bought this way, by basically just look and feel, hands on. Never have I just ordered a phone, because the specs were advertised as better than the competition. That's how the M7 got me, when it first came out.

I do the same thing. I was on my G3 and wasn't looking at a new phone till I heard Best Buy had a demo of the S7, played with it and it was an instant buy.

I could rattle off the list of the areas where my S7 Edge is better than the HTC 10, and the HTC owner could probably do the same. But if I'm to be honest, there are a few reasons why it had to be the S7 Edge for me. It was essential for me that I have a large screen phone, that it have an AMOLED screen, that it have both fast charging and wireless charging, and that the device looks spectacular. That's how I made my decision to get the edge.

You have to play with it. I have played with several phones over the last year and a half. Nothing "spoke" to me. I would read up on specs and go, hey seems great. Then go play with it and go...huh...boring or whatever. I will be visiting Verizon store on 29th to play. If all goes well I will probably preorder that coming Monday as I will also most likely go back the 30th and the 1st to play too. LOL!

Just so I'm clear here, there's absolutely nothing wrong with buying the 10 over another phone, especially if you were a fan of the M7/M8 (which I definitely was). Depending on what Moto does, this may be something I buy unlocked to mess around with until September, splitting time with my Edge, until the Note 6, Nexus, and iPhone 7 come out.

I think what I'm most excited about is the Nexus this year. An HTC device with Nexus imprint, possibly a new-gen AMOLED panel, and hopefully a larger battery would be pretty nice. Now that I think about it, given the size of the 10, how was it they were only able to go with a 3000 mah battery? Maybe it was a cost thing. Not sure.

I am at do or die at this moment. My current phone, DNA Droid, is about kaput (battery issues). 3+ on a fixed battery isn't bad. There isn't waiting until fall. Its either the S7e or the 10.

I have waited this long as I was going to replace my current phone with the M9...until it launched looking 99.999% the same as a M8. I didn't care for the 80's looking speaker grills. The 10 looks a lot like my DNA just a smidge bigger. So waiting until the 29th to get a hands on thought is good for me. Still have concerns on battery life as reviews are kinda all over the place.

I am not a phone jumper (shown by my 3+ year ownership of current phone lol) as to me its a pain to move between phones. Some people have the process down but for me its just a painful chore. Tinkering with computers/phones/what have you is no longer appealing other than small things here and there as my job pretty much has me burnt out on that arena anymore.

See, that's the problem--1) Comparing a DSLR to a phone camera is still useless on certain aspects of photography. The wayyyyyyyyyyyy smaller sensors in phones means they'll be coming up very short in the low-light dept. until something very big changes in sensor tech. 2) Generally my low-light experience has been like this: You either get a photo with a decent amount of exposure of the subject with lots of noise, or you get a pitch black picture where you can't see almost anything. I totally agree that the S7's camera allows a lot of noise at low light levels, but that's still worlds better than my previous phone (the Note 4, which had a pretty phenomenal camera for a phone, too). I'm not sure there are any phones with a camera that'll give you truly GOOD low light results (except MAYBE the Nokias with full-on cameras attached), so I'm happy with what the S7 does.

Wow - 3+ years. I need to be more like that.

What's even more surprising to hear is that the HTC 10 is bigger than the DNA. Total revisionist memory... b/c I remember when the DNA was released it seemed huge.

I've probably had 50+ phones in that span. Kudos to you for holding strong. Haha.

Yes, I agree. It's a matter of perspective I guess, and for those people that just don't use DSLR's then I am sure that most modern mobile phones cameras are just fine and dandy. For me the phone camera is not a biggie to be honest so even if the HTC 10 camera is on par (which I suspect it will be after some updates) with the S7 camera then great :) for most people and fine for me. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have as good as a camera as is possible in mobile phones, and for day shots they are really pretty good. Night time photos are best left to real cameras though, IMO :)

As other people have mentioned, I think both phones will be great phones. I know the S7 is but I really don't use the edge functions and I am scared that it might break, but so far so good. I really have no problems if the HTC 10 is 2mm thicker. I mean come on guys we are talking 2mm here.

When my HTC 10 arrives I will compare with the S7 and keep whichever one I like the most.

Seriously folks.... These phones are all so close these days that it's a matter of what you like or features you prefer. Saying that one camera is globally better than the other is pure rubbish. You can't go wrong with any of the choices. Wireless charging is nice and I have it on my current phone but it's not a deal breaker. Water resistance is good choice if it works for you but again it's a personal choice. The most important thing is that the phone works well and is comfortable to hold, has the right size screen and keeps you happy. For me, regardless of brand I want fast charging, USB - C expandable memory and a fast processor. Removable battery would be nice but not a deal breaker. Quick software updates and decent audio are also good to have. There is not one phone that gives me exactly what I want so for me it's a process of elimination by weeding out my must haves from the nice to haves. You really can't by a bad phone from amongst the top contenders so go for what you desire.

Holding strong...questionable. ;-) It has served me VERY well which makes jumping to a new phone very hard and all this hand wringing over S7e and 10. :-)

It was "bleeding" edge upon release. It was one of the first 5" screened phones, wifi charging, NFC code (I made a few). I got so much crap from my friends/co-workers about my "laptop" phone. Now a few have 6+'s and such.

Re: HTC 10 or Samsung Galaxy S7

no lag experienced? i just ordered the gold version. which colour do you have?

I've used every relevant phone over the past 3 years, iPhones and Blackberrys included, and I can honestly say no phone has checked off all the boxes like the S7 Edge. The display and camera are best in class. The battery life is superb; I can use the hell out of this phone for 24 hours, 5-6 hours on screen and not kill it. The software, which is much maligned, is so much better than people give it credit for. No random restarts, no slowdowns, no lag. My biggest test is usually if there's any keyboard lag and there's zero on this device. I have the fast wireless charger from Samsung and it's extremely useful. I use Samsung Pay everywhere I go because most places require you to use the chip on your card now instead of swipe. I haven't tested the IP rating, but I don't doubt it'll work if I ever need it.

If the 10 was out at the same time as the S7/Edge, it may have been a more difficult decision for me. I've argued that I believe the S7 to be the superior phone, but I'll be the first to tell you that it isn't by a wide margin and I wouldn't blame anyone for going the other way and getting the 10. What bothers me about the 10 is what it -could- have been.

HTC hit a home run, in my opinion, with the M7. It was such a gorgeous phone, took risks with things like the UltraPixel camera, was fast, okay battery, etc. So when I saw the M8, I was expecting the be-all end-all. Don't get me wrong; the M8 was a great phone. I just think they could have really separated themselves and they didn't. And then the M9 happened. 3 iterations of the same phone finally got to them and they laid an egg. It cost them, too. It's hard to recover when something like this happens.

So here we are with the 10. I really expected them to go in a much different direction and take a risk again, but what I see from the 10 is another iteration of what they've done the past 4 years. Now they've fixed a lot of things that needed to be fixed, improved in areas that needed to be improved, but for me it was what they should have done with the M8. 2 years ago. So that's why I'm underwhelmed with this phone. I was hoping they'd put something out that Samsung would get really nervous about. In a vacuum, however, this phone is really good. A lot of you are going to be really happy with it and you should be. I'm just convinced this won't turn the tide for HTC and get them back in a position where they're profitable.

Hope I'm wrong, though.

Yeah, we're 100% in agreement, I think. I just am really lazy, so have stopped carrying around my DSLR since my phone functions "well enough." For certain things (depth of field from more than 3", night time stuff, fast-moving objects, etc.), there's no comparison. However, I don't end up in those situations very often, so I just use my phone (and in fairness, I'm typically just hanging out with friends or what not, so I wouldn't have my SLR anyway).

I would be completely happy owning an HTC 10; I loved my M7, and if I didn't want to hop on the Samsung Pay bandwagon (among other things), I'd probably have waited for it. No doubt it'll be a phenomenal phone, regardless of whether it is better or worse than the S7 in the camera dept.

Samsung pay is one thing that I will probably miss. Found that to be really great and easy to use.

Well I'd still say the S7 has the better camera even if the results were identical because the speed in which this thing launches and focuses is amazing. Makes a huge difference. But as far as battery goes, on the S7 proper at least, I'll concede it could be a wash. That's fair.

I may not think this phone is better than the S7/Edge, but it's not a bad phone by any means. I'd use one and probably be pretty happy with it, but I was hoping for a bit more from them. HTC can be the Android standard, even over Samsung, but it has to stop relying on what they did with the M7 as the blueprint.

The over saturation is being addressed via updates which Android Central already stated came in for the camera so while the early reviews had the issue with the over exposure with back lit items in the pictures this shouldn't be an issue once we get final software. This is why I like how this site presents things as its not final and they received the update to correct what most are using final review material. Just like with any device in pre production you have some software glitches whats good is that through all of that the pre software is doing a helluva job so the updated final release software will fix.

I just pulled the trigger on the S7 Edge, can anyone tell me if there is a proper holster (used without a case) for the S7 Edge? I can't find one anywhere online? For example, with my HTC One M8, Seidio carried a "Spring Clip Holster" meant for use without the case and I really liked it for use at work.
