HTC 10 vs. Samsung Galaxy S7

I just pulled the trigger on the S7 Edge, can anyone tell me if there is a proper holster (used without a case) for the S7 Edge? I can't find one anywhere online? For example, with my HTC One M8, Seidio carried a "Spring Clip Holster" meant for use without the case and I really liked it for use at work.

Since you purchased a S7, then you might want to wander to the S7 forum versus asking for help with your S7 in an HTC thread?

Re: HTC 10 or Samsung Galaxy S7

I've used every relevant phone over the past 3 years, iPhones and Blackberrys included, and I can honestly say no phone has checked off all the boxes like the S7 Edge. The display and camera are best in class. The battery life is superb; I can use the hell out of this phone for 24 hours, 5-6 hours on screen and not kill it. The software, which is much maligned, is so much better than people give it credit for. No random restarts, no slowdowns, no lag. My biggest test is usually if there's any keyboard lag and there's zero on this device. I have the fast wireless charger from Samsung and it's extremely useful. I use Samsung Pay everywhere I go because most places require you to use the chip on your card now instead of swipe. I haven't tested the IP rating, but I don't doubt it'll work if I ever need it.

If the 10 was out at the same time as the S7/Edge, it may have been a more difficult decision for me. I've argued that I believe the S7 to be the superior phone, but I'll be the first to tell you that it isn't by a wide margin and I wouldn't blame anyone for going the other way and getting the 10. What bothers me about the 10 is what it -could- have been.

HTC hit a home run, in my opinion, with the M7. It was such a gorgeous phone, took risks with things like the UltraPixel camera, was fast, okay battery, etc. So when I saw the M8, I was expecting the be-all end-all. Don't get me wrong; the M8 was a great phone. I just think they could have really separated themselves and they didn't. And then the M9 happened. 3 iterations of the same phone finally got to them and they laid an egg. It cost them, too. It's hard to recover when something like this happens.

So here we are with the 10. I really expected them to go in a much different direction and take a risk again, but what I see from the 10 is another iteration of what they've done the past 4 years. Now they've fixed a lot of things that needed to be fixed, improved in areas that needed to be improved, but for me it was what they should have done with the M8. 2 years ago. So that's why I'm underwhelmed with this phone. I was hoping they'd put something out that Samsung would get really nervous about. In a vacuum, however, this phone is really good. A lot of you are going to be really happy with it and you should be. I'm just convinced this won't turn the tide for HTC and get them back in a position where they're profitable.

Hope I'm wrong, though.

I generally agree with you but I'm an audiophile(currently with a V10). If the S7e had the sound quality of either the V10 or the 10, I'd have one for sure. In my loosely informed opinion, the sound quality gap between the 10 and the S7e is greater than the battery/display/camera gap. Obviously, YMMV.

And that's perfectly fine. There's definitely people who prefer the superior audio over the camera/display/battery. And while I completely understand how you'd feel that way, history has shown that not nearly enough people care about the audio to make it a good marketing target as their sales have tanked in doing so. Kudos to HTC for focusing on it, but I wish they'd also spend time on the other things and get back into the green so they can continue to compete with the Samsung and Apples of the world.

I like audio quality myself (not enough to choose a phone strictly on that basis, but still), but the big issue with gambling on that as a differentiator, is enough people would have to have quality source music and headphones to make it worthwhile. The majority of the public is walking around with Apple earbuds in their ears (okay, I'm exaggerating, but you get my point), so they're not going to jump on a phone that advertises sound quality, just like no one is breaking down Tidal's door for a subscription. There are people that value this, yes, but I would imagine that the people who care about screen/camera are much more plentiful. So even if HTC is Samsung's equal in the latter departments, they should not be leaving that out of their advertising campaign.

Absolutely. I'm only speaking based on my preferences and thankfully I switchout phones every few months on Swappa so I get to enioy them all.

Well the sad part here is that the quality headphones the 10 ships with in the UK aren't being packaged with the phone here in the US. It's little decisions like that that make me shake my head. I want this company to start succeeding in this space, but it's like they just don't get it.

Yeah, I genuinely don't understand that at ALL. If I were in the market for the 10, I'd be seriously pissed.

It's between that and the 3000 mah battery/proclamation that the phone lasts 2 days on a charge. Other OEMs are fitting larger batteries into smaller phones, so either this was a cost approach or they don't have the tech available. It's 9mm thick---I can't say 100% because I didn't design the phone, but it's very likely there's room in there for a larger battery.

So instead going with a 3000 mah battery, they state it can go 2 days on a charge when clearly it cannot. Did they think people wouldn't find out? I just don't understand where their head is at. Hopefully these mistakes get overlooked and the phone sells well anyways.

The choice between the S7 and 10 is definitely an interesting one. The 10 looks way better and it does have those awesome audio credentials but I'd miss wireless charging and water resistance is a good perk. But that glass back is horrid...and HTC's Sense is the better pick I think. It's a tough choice for sure.

And that my friend is exactly why it is great to have HTC back in the game. To make it a tough choice. AC just posted a HTC 10 v iPhone 6 comparison and they pour glowing praise on the HTC 10 and state that it is up there with Sammy and Apple. So many people complaining that it's not an Apple or Sammy killer because it is not BETTER than those phones in certain areas..only on par! Don't understand where these people are coming from to be honest. It will get harder and harder to have one phone that is just head and shoulders above another flagship phone. I really don't care if the HTC camera doesn't blow the Sammy camera out the ball park! It's right up their with it though. It's better in certain areas (low light) and on par in other areas. Sure the HTC camera has some minor issues but I believe they will be addressed in future updates, so it can only get better :)

For me at least, what is great is that this phone should put HTC back into the game. There are several good to great reviews coming out and that's what they needed, at least to start. How well it actually sells is another matter altogether. I just hope it sells well enough that we see a HTC 11 :)

I think the issue with the 10 not being "better" than the S7 actually has nothing to do with what you or I think about the phone (it seems great), but more about the overall public perception of HTC and their phones. At this point Samsung has the vast majority of the Android mindshare among non-Android nerds (the average iOS or Android user who just wants the hot new phone), and so combined with Samsung's massive ad campaigns, nothing short of "better" will sway people to HTC's camp. And given how badly they've been doing the last couple years, they really need people to join their camp.

I hope the 10 really does put them in the upswing, but I worry that it'll get lost in the S7's dust.

FWIW, I love my s7 Edge. I'd still pick it out of the top 3 new devices because of waterproofiness and wireless charging (both features I love). Also, the screen is just so bloody gorgeous, and I'm getting killer battery life.

Agreed. That's my concern too is that it does get buried in the S7's dust. The S7 is selling very well and for sure it is a great phone also. Time will tell. Hopefully HTC will start shipping soon.

I am also getting insane battery life with my S7e. Screen is nice but it is somewhat over saturated. Don't really care about wireless charging myself, but can see that being a nice feature to have for some people. Let's also keep in mind that the S7e is closer to $800.
I do find that sometimes part of my hand is touching the edge screen and then doesn't pick up screen taps so that can be annoying.

I think wireless charging isn't something anyone really needs, but once you have it, it's definitely nice. I keep my phone on the wireless charger over night, so that i can easily grab the phone/put it back down when need be. But if I need to charge quickly, obviously using a cable is the way to go.

I have had wireless charging for three years. Meh. I am one of the "don't really care". Also heat is the enemy of battery life so if you don't recycle phones like underwear its something to think about.

For me hooking up a quick charger (possible heat issue within itself; we will see) and getting 50% in 30 minutes is ok by me. But thats me and my .02.

Depends on the person. Some may count it as a need for their daily lives -- Everyone is different :).

That being said I am in the boat of I enjoy it but .. I can also live without it if there is a phone I want that doesn't have it. The times I do have it though it is useful for my day to day on how I handle my phone once home and whatnot.

I had it on my Palm Pre (anyone remember those phones?) and I wasn't really all that fussed about it. Still have my Palm Pre 2 :) Shame that HP bollocksed up that phone :(
