disable default Text Messaging App (Messages)

If your using another 3rd party txt/SMS/MMS messaging app and you want to disable the stock messages app do the following:

Go to Settings > Sound & Display > Notification Flash
- now uncheck SMS/MMS

then open the Messages app and do the following
Menu > Settings

uncheck:
Delivery Reports
Auto Retrieve
Notifications

great info to have but I just unchecked notifications in the stock message app and it doesn't bother me anymore.

Not specific to the Eris but still a good tip. Text people without using text (email text them)

That is really cool. I didn't know you could do that

Just to let you guys know i figured out today that if your lock screen is up you can hold down the menu button and it unlocks it. you might already know, figured I'd throw it out there.

Really, people didn't know this?

I feel smart. ^_^

that is an awesome tip that will save me money, thank you so much for this

To silence the phone when someone is calling you, simple turn the phone on its screen facing down.

Press and hold the Power button(end call) hard key to pull up power, silence and wifi options.

Press and hold call button to activate the Voice commands/dialer

great tips! thank you!

I've had my phone for over 2 months and didn't know about the majority of these tips! I only just discovered this site through a friend yesterday but it's definitely one of my new faves :) Thanks for all the info!

To bypass entering your password for voice mail:
Menu > Settings > Call Settings > Voicemail > *86PXXXX# (The x's are your password)

Revised for 2.1:

Menu > Settings > Call >

Voicemail Service > set to "My Carrier" (you could have google voice here)

now go to Voicemail Settings >Voicemail number > *86PXXXX#

Faster Call to Ring (inbound calls)

thanks to the Hero forum for this tip:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-hero/5344-ring-lag-fix.html

You may want to call your cell phone to see the affect before you do this. My cell phone rings on the 2nd and a half ring from my office land line. After I did this, an inbound call rings on my cell phone at the 1st and a half ring.

1. bring up the phone app (like your making a call)
2. dial ##7764726 (PROGRAM)
3. enter password 000000 (thats 6 zeros)
4. go to Slot Cycle Index
5. change from 2, to 1.
6. hit Menu, then commit changes

Now the phone will reboot.

Make a call to your cell phone again and see if it rings faster.

This forces your phone to checking 2 times faster than it normally checks in for calls. From roughly 5 seconds to 2.5 seconds. I did this on my 2.1 OS, so the program layout may be a tiny bit different. But the term Slot Cycle Index will be stated the same. Once

What would happen if I changed it to 0?

What would happen if I changed it to 0?

I changed mine to zero for a while. Nothing happens - it just rings sooner, and probably eats a bit more battery, as it is checking the tower more frequently. After spending a weekend in a rural spot where the signal was switching between on and emergency only, eating the battery very quickly and making the phone lag so much it was unusable, I switched it back to one.

By the way, you do not need to dial ##PROGRAM. ##PST works as well (or ##778).

Don't bother with the OEM voicemail. Use Youmail...its free. I never have to dial a number or password. Voicemail can be saved as an mp3. Have youmail notify you via email and the link is archived in your email.

How to: Hard Reset the HTC Droid Eris

Perform a hard reset on your HTC Droid Eris. These steps will clear all data and settings off the device.

1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the Volume Down and Send buttons.
2. Press the Power button.
3. Follow the instructions to complete the hard reset.

Just copied and pasted from Jeremy's original post:

Disabling Sense (or making it not your primary home screen)

From the home screen hit menu > settings > applications > scroll down to HTC Sense > clear defaults.

next time you hit the home button it will ask you to select Home(android default), or HTC Sense. Select Home.

You will now get to choose which home screens to use each time you hit home, unless you hit "Use by default for this action"

To enable HTC Sense again if you set the android Home as default, hit menu > settings > applications > scroll down to home > clear defaults

again hit home and select HTC Sense set to default if you want to make it permanent again.

just remember, Android Home default gives you only 3 screens, HTC Sense gives you 7.

thanks for that tip, I find that really cool n would have never figured that out on my own.

get into "settings", then under "call settings" and then under the voicemail heading, when the keypad pops up, the p is on the top right corner.

Its for the voice mail password trick
