Everyone is so quick to throw rooting and adding a rom as the answer to everything, but some things to question first (especially if you're not tech inclined, in which case you should be asking yourself if rooting and roms are the way to go for you).

• I use Netflix through my phone on to my tv, does tv out still work with CM7? I know using some previous CM roms that it did not.
• If TV out does not work, what other stock functionality is lost from CM7 stable builds?
• There's nightlies for a reason, bug fixes, which means if you are constantly installing nightlies, you're constantly installing a buggy rom that does stabilize over time, correct? I think that would be important to clarify and note for 1st timers.

Last, I am not picking on CM at all, I think that the above could be asked about any rom out there. I think if you are going to go the rom route though, you should be aware of what things you do lose, despite your gains.

You are absolutely correct. Rooting is not a decision that should be made lightly. There are real and tangible consequences to rooting that anyone who thinks about it should be aware.

That's why the site is littered with warnings about the risks and consequences of rooting.

With that said, anyone who is thinking about rooting should read, read, read. Start in the ROM's and Hacks forum and proceed from there.

That low space bug is what finally pushed me over the edge tO load CM7. Haven't looked back since! Do it!

I don't believe the ROM's solve this problem. I rooted and installed a different ROM and still get this error. Did find a good tip on the Contact Storage (my biggest offender) though at HTC Error: Application data space is low. | 72suited.com

Insurance does not care if you are rooted or not. It's the Warranty that is violated, not the insurance.

So let's say if I was going to file a insurance claim with Asurion, they wouldn't care if I was rooted?

Nope - it's insurance, not a warranty. The will ship you a new phone, after charging the deductible, and request you send the old phone to them if it's not lost or stolen. If you report it lost or stolen the ESN will be marked as invalid.

Well that should be no problem for me than, since I've had the phone for a year now and the warranty is no longer valid.

One more quick question about rooting: I know its good to do backups but does it wipe your contacts and SMS or does that only happen when flashing ROMs?

Backups do not wipe your SMS and contacts, so yes flashing new ones does wipe everything, I had the incredible before and every time I through on a new rom I would have to google sync everything back. Hope this answers your question

Thanks. I just re-read my question and I didn't word it right. What I meant to ask was does the act of rooting wipe contacts and messages and such?

Rooting itself doesn't wipe your data. That only happens if you go into recovery and do a full wipe before flashing a custom ROM.
