HTC is looking in to removing the FPS CAP

There's been fixes for the Epson and Nova screens.
Epson screens had tearing while using the same "Dirty hack"...

However, there seems to be another kernel out that fixed that.

Check out XDA for more info.

I'm starting to think.that the fps issue wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't mentioned on some of the tech sites. It may just be in our heads that we need this now. I don't see the real importance of it. Bit maybe I'm wrong. Maybe this is a real issue with a lot of consumers. I just doubt that's the case.

90%+ of people dont even know about this issue and will never notice it, but for people who plat lo tof 3D games this is a very small problem. What is comes down to is why does Droid X have it uncapped and EVO is capped, thats all. HTC should have never capped it in the first place. I think by the end of summer they will have a firmware update for this. We all here in this forum should email them daily to remind them of this issue and email sprint also. Then HTC will maybe speed up the process of making a firmware change.

Have you tried flashing the fix yourself? If not, then you don't realize how much of a difference it really make. The phone is very noticeably smoother, to the point where it feels like a different phone. Scrolling through list, through web pages even through home screens is completely different. You will realize how jerky it is when capped at 30 fps.

I will either wait for the official fix from HTC with Froyo or untill xda comes out with a solid all working fix, either way i am not in a hurry.

Besides Assassins Creed 3d.... I am really struggling to find all these 3d games.

I am hoping that we do get more however. :)

It won't. The Adreno can't even hit 30 fps in Neocore, a benchmark app designed specifically for it's graphics engine, on a 4+ inch screen.

But download Neocore from the market and run it. You'll get somewhere between 25 and 30 fps. Decide for yourself if the 3D framerate is acceptable vs. letting the wailing and gnashing of teeth coming from the intertubes influence you.

Huh? I haven't tried any of the hacked roms over at XDA, but based on the comments I read over there it's a very noticeable difference.

I have used them. And built my own. Over and over and over again. Fact remains that the GPU can't hit 30 fps with or without the fix in a 3D benchmark.

Neither can N1
or Desire
or Incredible
But legend, aria, MT3G slide, and any other Adreno GPU phone with a screen under 4" sure can. But don't take my word for it, try it yourself!

So when people say the difference is noticeable and the scrolling is much smoother, what is it that they have actually done if not up the fps? You are saying it can't be done.. so what is it that IS being done by the people at XDA?

I'm just a curious reader .. hoping you can explain a little more :)

I'm also looking into winning the lottery!

It's increasing the maximum frame rate, just like they say.

My point is that even stuck at 30 fps, the Evo can't reach 30 fps becaue the screen is so big. it's a trade we all made. It hits (let's say) 26.5 fps. Unlock the frame rate, it still can only hit 26.5 fps

On the other end is a benchmark called glgears, ported from linux. It can boost the frame rate by about 10 points, to 40 fps. That is real, but you don't see the difference unless you look at the numbers, because it's a red gear spinning around and looks good at 25 fps or so. 30 fps looks fine. 40 fps looks fine. Because 25ish fps looked fine too.

Huge props to the guys who figured it out, especially when told it couldn't be done. Thats what Android is all about, and we need to support them all any way we can. :) It's just not as useful as everyone wants it to be.

I'm sorry, but I'm still a little confused.

So what exactly is this difference people are noticing then? Excuse me if you've answered the question already I am still just a bit confused.

I won't really play many, if any, 3d games on the phone but even then I can notice a slight bit of choppiness with the EVO (nothing major) when I see videos of phones with Froyo that supposedly have higher FPS. For a 1GHz cpu it makes sense that this shouldn't be the case, again it isn't a big deal to me but I'd like an explanation as to what the XDA fix really did, and why with the fix people claim to be running better.

Of course, you don't have to explain anything but I'd appreciate a little more insight :D
