HTC Mail Memory Leak/Bug ("Phone Storage Getting Low")

i'm wondering...has anyone had the mail problem re-occur AFTER the first hard reset? could it be a "one and done" thing?
Yes I did. After the second reset I switched to K-9 mail and have not had a problem since.
(Sorry responded to the wrong post.)

HTC mail prob

I'm on my second DI due to this issue. I thought it was a phone issue but through research on here and other boards see it's a sofeware/app issue. I use yahoo mail as my sole mail/pop account.

My replacement phone started to get the low memory message recently, seems like 2weeks and it strats happening. It could be related to me changing setting frome default to 30days and no limit on messages. However, in preparation to wipe it, I backed everything up. Then I tried something. I didn't wipe the phone and I installed K9 as suggested here and a strange thing happened. Everything stared to work fine again...it's as if installing K9 undid something that was causing the memory prob...

So I'm still using HTC mail, I just have a duplicate of the mail in K9. I have polling turned off on k9 so I don't end up with a ton of unneeded mail.

I'll report back if anything changes. Thoughts?

So..... when you delete everything (including trash) your HTC mail app has near zero MB?

I did not delete anything. Just installed K9 set it up and afterward the phone worked normal again text messaging works again as does HTC mail.

I really want to follow your status on this...

I have installed K9 and I still have gmail and HTC mail going so I am getting all my emails in 3 programs. My HTC mail was staying around 48MB, I then installed K9 and deleted a huge amount of the emails in HTC. Now my HTC show im using 68MB, this makes no sense at all.

FWIW, I'd recommend you stop using the HTC mail and delete the account. I haven't found a way to recapture the MB (probably have to hard reset), but it should help clean things up for you.

I assume the third email account is gmail, which you'd probably keep as is anyway.

Internal phone memory 6.6 total, 6.5 avail no change

HTC mail 21.58 down from 22.11 yesterday ( 15.90 data + 5.68 cache)

I'm wondering whether it is the "download number of days" setting that is clearing the MB usage for mail. If it is cleared everyday except for the current day plus two days previously, that would automatically reduce the amount in storage. I think I had mine set to "All" - if I remember correctly.

more detail

So far my phone is still working fine. I am still using HTC mail. K9 is just sitting there being unused other than the first day I installed it. so it sits a 2.4mb. When the problem started HTC mail was at 128mb. My settings were no limit on mail size and 30days. After installing K9 the HTC mail dropped to 99mb and stayed around there. As a precaution I I dropped the settings to 25K and 3 days for HTC mail settings.

Now that everything been working fine for a while I've been playing with my HTC mail settings to see if that triggers the problem. Now I've upped it to no limit and 30 days to see what happens. The size grew to 110mb. We'll see what happens...

I deleted my 2 HTC mails accounts and the memory for them still stayed above 50MB. I then wiped the phone and installed just the gmail and K9 since I like that better then the gmail one.

Well that seems to be the key, my mail hit 126 mb a few hours after switching to no limit and 30 days worth of mail. Now the memory problem is back. In fact K9 mail wouldn't launch, so I force closed HTC mail and then K9 mail opened. I'm polling my yahoo mail box to see what happens. Looks like I will be getting rid of HTC mail...

Looks like I will be getting rid of HTC mail...how do you do that without wiping? Even empy it sits at 100mb, but the phone is working ok.

you need to do a hard reset to free up the data unfortunately. i've been unable to find any other way to free it up...

on the bright side, you won't have anymore problems, i can all but guarantee it at this point. after resetting and switching to k9 23 days ago, my k9 with all my accounts running at full tilt the file never gets larger than 10 megs. the unused htc mail sits at 1.07 megs

I'm betting(hopping) that the memory issue has to do with the size, and "days" download in our email accounts.

Reset + 19 days

Phone Memory 748 total, 704 down from 705 yesterday(Installed new live wallpaper)

I think you are right, I'm pretty confident that if you change your settings to 1meg or no limit on size and 30days you will have the memory problem in short order.

In my case with just one pop e-mail account (all my mail gets forwarded to this one) once I made the switch to those settings the low memory issue came up within hours of the change, bloating the HTC mail up to 126meg. 125 meg or so seems to be the trigger point. I'm using k9 mail now and my currently unused HTC mail sits at 99mb even after deleting mail and trash manually. I wish there was a was to clear or remove HTC mail without wiping or hard resetting the phone...

I'll probably end up doing a hard reset at some point when I have some free time to screw with setting it up again. I have Astro now for backing up apps. Anything else that will make the reset any easier? How about a way to save favorite people & preferences and the like?

So I'm thinking that as long as I keep the "days" I download to three, or less, and the file size low, my phones memory(HTC) will fluctuate in the 20MB range ...

rpsdroid, you pointed out that that going unlimited kills the phone pretty fast, and jccorbi only has a days worth of mails come in, with no issues at all. (How much mail do I need to keep on the phone anyway, If it's that important I can forward it to my gmail account)

The only issue I have is not being able to backup my bookmarks, everything else is a piece of cake to setup in comparison.
