HTC Merge in Alltel stores NOW!

If anyone can get a hold of them at retail it will work with verizon. i will wait a cpl more weeks to see if it comes out on big red if not im gonna try to get a hold of one from alltell via verizon.

Got a source? While I realize they have test units that work already, I would be interested just to make sure. Plus I also don't want to be the sap that's SOL because he heard it would work and it doesn't.

But I'm fine with waiting anyways.

The HTC Merge looks to be a very nice phone. I do like the keyboard from what I can tell. Looks pretty solid. Congrats on coming from a BB. I went from a BB Curve to an HTC Droid Eris and now with an HTC Thunderbolt. The move from a BB to an Android phone was kind of tricky at first but I am Android all the way now. I still have a Blackberry Storm2 for my work phone, so I can't run away from it completely yet. I know you will get as addicted to Android as I am and won't look back.

Have you had the chance to try the mobile hotspot yet?

There's no mention of it on Alltel's site and there's no option to add while pre-ordering.

Did you talk to the sales rep about it when you bought the phone?
I don't see mobile hot spot and usb teathering is disabled as well. Maybe that it is a paid service, it was for blackberry. I will find out for sure from my friends that work at alltel and post it.

i spoke with a verizon tech about it. he said since its a smartphone and has all the needed hardware (cdma) etc it should work just fine on verizon especially since they own most of alltell.

Does that mean there's a way for Verizon to get it from Alltel for you? Or am I misunderstanding?

I think he means, if one were to purchase it direct for full price from an alltel location or on eBay then they could probably activate it on verizon.

I'm guessing one could use this: Check Your Device to see if it would be activated. The thing is, Verizon would have to have had it certified first.

In any case, with the latest news about Merge (HTC Trophy and HTC Merge Coming Soon To Verizon) we might be able to get our hands on it soon enough. :)

I've seen that and the other thing with the blockbuster app I posted. Let's hope they pick up the pace.

that is exactly it, if it does not end up coming out on verizon and you get your hands on one then verizon would be able to activate it for you.

I haven't looked into that. Where I live believe it or not alltel has the best signal and I don't have much use for that. I would like to know if it would work though. I'm wotking to much right now to try it.

You should have waited.. I heard alltel will be getting the Milestone X SOON... like any day now. I'm still trying to decide between the two.

I have been hearing Alltel was getting the X before Christmas and that was the phone I was waiting for. I skiped the Desire waiting for it and was about to give up and get the Desire because I had a blackberry 8330 curve. It had and hour glass on the screen more than it did anything else and I had to reboot it a few times a day. I could not wait any longer with that P.O.S. I have 30 days to take the merge back if the X came out but I have been typeing on the screen to see what I would be getting myself into and I think for me I will stick with the Merge for that reason. The X is a very nice phone, I wanted the big screen and hdmi and the faster 1ghz but it would not have the keyboard and it would habe blur. It will be a tough choice to make and I think it all comes down to if you can live with out the keyboard or not. Coming from a berry for me that is a lot to ask.

Rooting and roms are another reason why the X maybe a better choice for some if they want that. I have been searching for Merge perm rooting and roms. It is a new phone so there doesn't seem to be anything developed for it yet and I'm sure that it won't take much for the milestone x after it is out because it is the droid x. I'm hopeful that it won't be long for the Merge to be rooted.

For those wondering about the mobile wi-fi hotspot, it looks like it's actually included--just not listed on the main menu.

It's pretty easy to run. Go to Settings | Applications | Quick Launch. Pick something easy to remember like Search + w or Search + h. On the list of applications to choose, select Wi-Fi Hotspot.

Navigation also has been removed from the main menu but can be launched via this method.

I haven't tried the tethering yet, but it seems to be available with no workaround needed.

I am new to android and have been working way to many hours to figure out everything about this phone. That is why these fourms are so great! Thank you dicsostrings! I found allot of hidden apps in there! I did see how to usb teather but haven't had a chance to try it yet. I turn on the hotspot just now and when I get home I can't wiat to see it work.

More great Merge/Alltel news! For those of you wanting to travel with this phone: I threw in an AT&T SIM card and the Alltel Merge is unlocked from the factory for GSM networks!

What WHAT?!?!?!? Video? Pic? Please! :)

Okay, I'll take some pics.

It's a SIM from a 3G Nook, so I can't actually make calls with it, but I'll show the mobile networks screen with the SIM inserted, the bars at the top, and the fact it doesn't pop up a message asking for the unlock code.
