HTC One aluminum body scratch test (UPDATED WITH BLACK VERSION)

Re: HTC One aluminum body scratch test

I have owned the black version since last Thursday and I can definitely vouch that the back scratches easy.
I have previously owned all the HTC EVOs in order of the years that came out and I didn't use a cover for any of them and the wear and tear on them was very minimum. I carry them naked in my pockets and dock them in my car.
After 4 days I can clearly already see wear & tear on the back of my HTC One. I have on set it on my wood surface desk at work, wood surface bar and arm rest dock in my car. The scratches are not noticeable from a distance but you can see them up close at an angle exposing it to the light. Similar to what scratches look like on a waxed car having to look up close to see them. At first I thought they were just dried watermarks but they are indeed scratches.

To my luck a inexperienced high school kid at Sprint activated my phone wrong so I was getting data call failure messages the 1st 48hrs. Took it back to Sprint and the lazy reps tried to blame it on the network towers being upgraded in the area which was false. Later took the phone to a different Sprint store where the reps actually fixed the problem but tomorrow I am going to take the phone back and use that reason to demand a replacement especially since I am am still in the 14 day refund grace period. I hate covers but I may have to get one for this phone.

So again the black version's back scratches easy but just sitting it on typical surfaces but because of the black finish, the scratches are only noticeable if you look up close.
After 4 days my back looking up close looks like I had the phone for a few months

Anyone else with similar results with the Black version? I was planning on getting the Black model when my contract was up, but quick wear does not excite me.

Re: HTC One aluminum body scratch test

Here is a drop test. It compares it to the iPhone 5, but its a well done video.
HTC One vs iPhone 5 Drop Test! - YouTube

Not saying the test is bogus but why couldn't they have panned out and shown the entire drop from start to finish? We see the start of the drop but the camera switches to the impact, not a continuous shot. For all the viewer knows he might have dropped the phones from heights rather than what he stated. Although the iPhone seemed to have more screen damage it would be easier to repair. The iPhone has an iFixit repairability score of 7 out of 10 while the HTC One has a repairability score of 1 out of 10. But even with a repairability score of 10 out of 10 I would still not own an iPhone.

Re: HTC One aluminum body scratch test

I'm so relieved that my htc One's aluminium is scratch proof. But does anyone know about the what side materials (white plastic or cement??) are made of?
It looked like a cement or plastic. I worried that it might get colour changed or dirtied by hands.
If they are made of plastic they might get cleaned off easily I think...
I kinda have a small crack on that white piece just next to the volume button and even though it's a tiny, it already made me crazy...

I don't know if it's been stated in this thread but the trick in Op's video is that the phone is actually scratching the keys. I doubt this phone has a hardness of 9 (8 sounds more likely) but even so, that's much harder than most metals we run across on a regular basis. It's certainly a fun little way to show off the phone though.

and so can my 12 year old sister owning a cheap 70 dollar phone ..
What's the difference between you and her ;p ??

I think the closest living relative to the One with a (mostly) aluminum body is the EVO 4G LTE. I've had mine for a little over a year, never in a case. Ironically, most of the wear and tear on the phone is on the plastic pieces of it (the shiny upper part of the back, and the lower piece of the back around the speaker). The anodized black aluminum is scratch-free. The only damage to the aluminum itself is some minor dings on the corners from drops, and some scratching around the USB port.
Unless you're extremely hard on phones (in which case, you should have a case on it anyway), I wouldn't worry at all about the finish on the One.

This is such a bogus test against the Iphone...I own the ONE and love it, but this is total crap! Look at his wrist motion when he drops the One versus when he drops the Iphone. He obviously filcks his wrist just enough to make the Ihone drop on it's face and he gives the HTC no wrist action at all...Why waste our time with stuff like this?

Yeah, I think they just kept doing the test until they got what they wanted then substituted that shot into the drop sequence. Even though the guy may have put some wrist action on the drop we have no idea what happened since they didn't show the entire drop. Just beginning, cut away then landing. BS test.

For those wondering if the black htc one fairs well in everyday wear tear, it does. It's amazing how my phone's aluminum body stays scratch free for 3 months now. The back is protected by a case but the unprotected front stays and looks beautifully new right out the box despite me mixing my phone with my keys and coins. It's only weakness is the ir power button which has slight scratches. I did a drop test albeit accidentally from at least 4.5ft screen first on concrete and it came out scratch and dent free.

For those samsung trolls. My old gs3 is littered with scratches even at the sides because I didn't fit a case for it in just 3 days thinking it was made of indestructible polycarbonate. It's not possible to carry it without a case without scratching it and putting a plastic screen guard over a plastic back just doesn't feel right. I also performed an accidental drop test on the same height and my $250 a piece amoled display gave in.

With the silver it's the borders that get micro dents and chips, the only solution is a double flip cover but it will hide the phone totally, looks like HTC saw this and made the borders of the Max in plastic like for the Mini
