HTC One Developer Edition a Bogus unlicked phone?

I would feel ripped off buying the 32gb for just $50 less than the 64gb.
Unless I'm missing something, the prices are: 32GB for $575 and 64GB for $650, so that's a $75 difference.

I, for one, have no use for the extra 32GB, so I'd rather spend the $75 elsewhere. :)

Does it work on T mobile Lte? If not there's your answer.

Not sure, but then I would refer back to the post of mine that you originally quoted. Nobody said unlocked Dev Edition (or unlocked at all) means it has to work on all GSM carriers frequencies. Does it work on AT&T? YES. Then it also works in the rest of the world minus China and Japan.

So, the general public market for a 64gb device is small, but the developer market is so huge it warrants development of a 64gb model? Is that what you are saying? I think there may be a flaw in your logic. I guarantee ANY of the major wireless carriers would sell more 64gb units then HTC would sell developer units simply because of the numbers of people involved. There's markets for larger devices for everyone. If there was not, AT&T wouldn't even bother dealing with the larger model themselves and just sell the smaller one too. For that matter, Apple wouldn't bother with more then one size of phone or iPads either. One size does not fit all.

The logic is not flawed. The demand for a 64gb model sold through carriers is not enough to warrant the additional cost for htc. Period. The only reason att has the 64 gb model is because it's identical to the developer phone. You should also note that the developer models are more expensive than their carrier counterparts, hence the reason why htc offers them.

I know you like to think there is a demand for high storage since you want it yourself, but there just isn't.

AT&T probably just jumped in first and said that they would give HTC X amount of dollars plus a percentage of the sales to be the Exclusive Carrier for the 64 GB model and HTC could not say no.

Actually, i think there is demand because i not only want it for myself, but i see post up and down the internet that ask for the same thing. Not just on this site. Think it might be a case of you thinking there isn't a demand because you don't want it youself maybe. But if there was no demand, AT&T wouldn't be offering it. To do so requires additonal marketing materials, addition SKU, and additional programing in their system as well as training for their employees. It will be interesting to see what your response will be should other carriers start getting 64gb models as well in the future.

Lots of people say they want something, but then when I comes out they don't get it. I wonder how many of the iPhones sold are 64gb models. They've been around for a while, so that actually a decent indicator for this topic.

The only reason att has it is because it's identical to the developer model. There is literally no investment on their part to add another SKU. (the same cannot be said of HTC) People do not buy 64 Gb handsets in volume. I'm sorry you're having trouble accepting that.

IIRC, apples average device $ figure is around. $650. So in other words; by far the majority are buying 16 gb, with a mix of 32 gb in there as well. The 64 gig is a niche market.

But the iPhone 64gb costs $200 more than the one. The one 64gb is well priced. I would never buy the 32gb for just $50 less

Doesn't matter. Most people aren't paying full price. The carrier is though. Htcs costs are also higher, which is why att is the only carrier selling the 64 model. (which, as I've said twice already, is identical to the developer model, which helps htc recoup the costs)

And STILL you have yet to explain why AT&T is offering it at all. If demand is so low for such a device as you claim, what would be the point in offering it at all? Why even have one?

So you are only screwed if you chose T-Mobile which is a given anyways if you live outside a major T-Mobile city. I mean they use really fast 3G so that's fine, and LTE is the buzz these days, but until the EU gets on the LTE bandwagon and the chip makers start covering all of the "global" LTE frequencies for EU/US to cover the EU and ATT/T-Mo/other US GSM carriers it doesn't do much for us anyways. This could be years down the road.

I've explained four times already why. The att version is identical to the unlocked/Dev version. It doesn't cost att or htc anything extra to offer it through att. That is NOT true of T-mobile or sprint, if they decided to offer it.

Actually, no. You haven't. You are just talking in circles. That's not an answer at all. You say there isn't much demand. Yet a carrier is offering it. I fully understand that it's almost the same model, except for branding, but If there wasn't any demand for a larger size, then the 64gb model wouldn't be sitting on their shelf. It wouldn't even exist. Why sell something no one wants? That is the part you have not explained.

I have answered it multiple times. Just because you do not like the answer does not make it not so.

Here's how it went down:

Htc: "So we're going to be selling this unlocked model that's 64gigs and it will be compatible with your network. Do you want it so your staff can up sell customers to it? Pure profit for you guys and no extra costs beside the extra storage. It won't be going to any other carriers because we're not making it compatible with their bands."

Att: "Sure why not."

The ONLY REASON att has the 64 gig model is because it is compatible with their bands. It isn't just almost the same, it IS EXACTLY the same minus a silk screen logo on the back. Att knows full well the market is tiny for it, but it's pure profit for them so they don't care. They'll try to get customers to buy it even if they didn't come in looking for it. That's how retail works.

Its also the exact same reason apple offers one: there is almost no market for it, but they make a huge profit on it for those that want to buy it. The difference is that Apple has the money to invest in making it for all carriers, while htc does not. For HTC, the market just isn't big enough for it to make sense to invest extra money in a model that will result in very little return. (apple's market position is also a huge factor in this, because they're much, much larger than htc)

Wow. Your assumption of private conversations and transactions that take place between two companies is truly astounding. Clearly the market is not as small as you attempt to make it, otherwise it wouldn't even be worth the effort. If they didn't sell, they'd still get stuck with the devices. I doubt each device is being sold on consignment. I find it interesting that you think HTC is too strapped to make larger models for other carriers, but wasn't too strapped to engineer a larger model in the first place. Very very interesting.

There's a big difference between selling a large capacity unlocked model for full price and selling a subsidized one through the carrier. The only reason they are offering it through att is because the unlocked version is recouping the costs for HTC. (The subsidized one won't)

Also, we know the market is tiny based on Apple. We know it for a fact, and its something you can't argue yourself out of.

Why is it so hard for you to admit you are in the extreme minority here? You did this in another thread too, until enough people posted that you finally (seemed at least) to 'get' it.

Your post is full of assumptions and your own personal opinion and not facts, so how can you tell he is in the minority?

I really wish the OP would change the thread title! "unlicked phone" LOL, but gets my eye every time I see it.
