HTC One Google Edition Pros/Cons/Thoughts Discussion

A little birdy told me Google suggested this to force Apple to take them on in the courtroom over on-device search patents. The software for these devices is built by the OEM, but directly from Googles code with their blessing.

Apple will never sue Google, their lawsuit would lose because android's patent has been around longer than apples. On a further note, apple will never change because it would make their lawsuits frivolous.

Maybe HTC will add some tweaks in the backgroung keeping all visuals vanilla? Adding beats and some camera software won't take long, updates could still be quick. If the Google edition HTC One loses Zoes then there's much less reason for the 4mp camera.

I actually like the idea, HTC is actually listening to the public, how many threads have we seen where people say "HTC should let you choose which version (Sense vs AOSP) to install, since obviously just let you choose which version to install they did the next best thing offer both version to give the users a choice like they wanted.

Paying more upfront for a phone with fewer features (same as the galaxy s4) that actually has functionality REMOVED!

It's so easy to just throw a ROM on and get vanilla Android if you prefer fewer features.

Why not allow those features (all of them) to be downloaded and installed on the phone?

If these phones can be tweaked so that you still get great hardware ie. A better camera to offset not needing Sense to make ultra pixels good or better sound hardware so you don't need Beats, then that's a far better trade to get out of skins having to go through carrier delayed updates. Look at the S3. Arguably the biggest android seller of 2012. Are you aware that some carriers are SIX MONTHS behind in getting updated to jellybean? Not 4.2 Jellybean... Six months behind just to get 4.1

Just so you know I'm not disagreeing with your idea. Being able to be free of delayed updates but able to choose downloadable features would be a good idea

I'm not worried about updates to the OS at all. Now with Google moving toward pushing the stellar features into Play Services, all an upgrade is going to do for me is change a number in a box three taps deep. I've been without BLE this far, and I doubt I'll miss something I didn't have in the first place. Besides, I have no battery woes.

Sense 5 > stock android right now. The best thing about this, as with the S4, is for the development community. They will almost now be guaranteed to have stable ROM a lot easier. The general public, like the S4, won't care.

You can't have your cake and eat it too. You get AOSP software, or you don't. Not a mish mash like you described.

Of course, these aren't nexus, so it's possible, but the S4 was seen with the bone stock Google made camera app.

Depends on how much Beats and the Sense camera are baked into the base OS. Example, could someone rip the camera APK from Sense One and have just work when installed onto a Google Edition One?

Exactly. People are never satisfied. They hate touchwiz or sense but want stock android to include some features of either. Well duh. This is why Samsung and HTC feel the need to improve on android. You can't come on here talking about how much you hate the skins but want certain features on stock. It's obvious that sense and touchwiz improves android in a lot of ways for most users and it's funny how geeks won't admit it yet clamour for features.

Stock android ain't all that great.

Me I run a Nexus and when people ask me why, I answer because I like the easy unlock/root/flash and enjoy. I can add much of the same goods piece by piece as a branded device running whatever skinned UI.

I think the same kind of applies here with these Google Edition devices, my only concern still is unlike the Nexus line there is no guarantee that there will be true AOSP support or even official factory images released.

I hear you but most likely people that are into phones like this are those that tinker and flash roms. They can do the same to one they get from the carrier and get rid of the bad stuff. I flash ROMs. There's no good reason for me to pay 600+ for a device when I can do the same thing if I have a upgrade available. And with a carrier device I can always go back to stock and OTAs if I so choose. So I get it but at the same time it just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense in several situations. I'm already unlocked, rooted and on a custom Rom. No sense at all in getting this device. And I don't see the sense for others that do the same. Direct updates from Google? Who cares, the update will be on xda a day after lol. I know my opinio doesn't cover anyone. Just my thought. Not knocking anyone who will get it though.

Oh I agree.. I've said since the start of the S4 Google Edition, this will appeal to a certain crowd and thats about it.

Me personally, I don't have 600 bucks to throw down on a phone. I'd rather just grab the branded device, root it and enjoy. I've used both branded and AOSP and can live with both.

I like these, not for the devices, but for the trend it seems to be uncovering. I still dream of a day where Samsung creates is features as apps, that can be an appeal to buy their hardware, but not require a completely different UI in the form of TouchWiz or Sense to function. If the skins would be skins (themes or launchers) and allow consumers full choice in how they use their device. Sell it with the Sense launcher enabled and defaulted out of the box, but leave AOSP underneath with full functionality due to the features being apps for those that want it to find and enjoy.
