HTC one headphones EXTREMELY strange problem.

My HTC one is behaving quite strangely.

I am having issues with the reaction the phone is having to the headphone MIC button. I am aware of the need for an app to do the double tap to skip etc. I use headset controller for this.

Now, the problem at the moment is that the phone is registering every "single" click as a skip back command. It reacts immediately, and will not respond to any other variant of the clicking.

I have uninstalled headset button app and restarted etc. The strangest thing, is that this behaviour happens on 3 of my headphones (old Gnex official/other random one button mic headphones) but on the official set i got with the phone (that are broken and only transmit audio to the right ear) it works perfectly. Single click pauses, double click (with app) skips forward.

Has anybody experienced this before? I obviously need a new set of headphones in any case but why would HTC one respond differently to what is essentially the same thing?

Thanks in advance any advise would be awesome. Phone is running latest 4.2.2 on Three in the UK. No mods or root etc.

Just as extra information, in case this means anything to anybody.

When it was installed, i used the debug feature of headset controller to check what the phone was registering. Considering the fact I have one button headphones, the app was saying I was "double tap (left)". What does the "left" bit mean?

The official headphones register this same command as "double tap (centre).

As another test, the same situation on a new, pure Nexus 7 2013 brings the normal results.

App debug says "double tap(centre) on ALL headphones. I guess my HTC one is broken?

UPDATE

Got another cheap set of headphones.

These ones have the wonderful quirk of attempting to give the phone skip/volume etc commands via a wiggle of the headphone jack plug!

HTC won't give me any advice other than "only use official headphones" but i've never experienced anything like this mess before on any other phone.

Seriously, is my phone broken???!

Well, just for completion sake.

I ordered some official HTC headphones. No problems whatsoever with them. Work perfectly, no quirks no issues with wiggles or button presses.

Clearly cheap headphones don't work!
