HTC One - KitKat Update, Hard Reset and Dead Android (Red Triangle with !)

I got the kitkat update two days ago. Disaster. Phone froze up and so I did a hard reset. Second time I'm losing all data. I know I should have backed up. Now phone is in a really bad way. I have the android standing up and then falling face down with a red triangle and exclamation point, underneath which it says, "no command." Phone seems to want to restart, but is unable to do so.

HTC tells me warranty is voided and to reset the phone using terminology I don't understand will cost me at least $90. Something to do with restoring the bootlocker and unrooting the phone. I've been to youtube and downloaded some files - adb.exe and fastboot.exe as well some drivers. Pretty sure there's more files that I'll need. More importantly, with the general problem I'm experiencing now, will these and other related files do the trick? Or do I need to do something more hardcore?

Can anyone help me - step-by-step, both with doing whatever it is HTC would have done as well as retrieving my data (mostly pics)?

did you get the update via the official OTA?

is your phone rooted?

And you posted the exact, exact same question in the Google Nexus 7 Tablet forum why exactly...?

What is this? Some sort of conspiracy theory? We demand answers!

Sorry if I've done something wrong in posting my problem. I'm new to this site and to how the posting process works. I clicked on something that appeared to allow me to repost on other relevant boards but wasn't able to find out exactly how it worked.

As for specific technical points, I may not be able to answer them. I bought the phone off swappa so don't know all the history. I'm trying to contact the seller via swappa to get what I can. That said, when I called HTC customer service, I believe they told me that the phone had been rooted and mentioned something about the bootloader as well.

Obviously not very happy and would like to rectify without sending away for repair at significant cost, notwithstanding lack of warranty. [ASIDE: what a load of nonsense regarding breach of warranty terms simply because OS was modified!!]

All helpful information welcome.

I assume it was official OTA, as it came directly to my phone. Can't recall if it came via google play or other source. As noted below, I believe the phone is rooted and the bootloader unlocked.

Hey, no worries :)

Based on what you've added to your first post, we're working on the premise that you bought a used, rooted HTC that glitched when you attempted to update via the official OTA that HTC sent. You might want to re-ask in the "Rooting, ROMs and Hacks" forum in the HTC Forum (one level above this one). I'm suspect this has happened before to people.

Good stuff. Will try that forum as well. Sort of figured it had. At least that's what I hoped for even as wouldn't with the problem on just anyone! P.S. What does PM refer to, as in PM zorrowaz?

Re: KitKat Update, Hard Reset and Dead Android (Red Triangle with !)

Based on what you've said, your best bet would be to post in the Rooting Forum. Even if you want to try to get it back to original or "stock" to accept the update and then it's your choice if you want to mod it again or keep stock.

Also, don't PM zorrowaz. That was a joke.
