HTC One (M8): Camera Lens Issue

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Correct.... No side 2 from my findings.... I applied these and even though there was nothing to indicate a "Side 2", these appeared (once installed) that they had a "Side 2" due to them not looking clear to me... So, I made an effort to see if there was a "Side 2" and thus destroyed the 2 lens protectors for the main lens.... I did install the secondary lens cover... but it still looks to me that there is a "Side 2"... As the cover isn't crystal clear and does cause the camera to give me the "blocked" notice on occasion.

That's interesting. I tried to look for a "side 2" on mine but couldn't really find it. I'll try again once I get my replacement device...but then again, I don't want to rip the protector apart looking for something that isn't there.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I am still waiting on my replacement M8 to get delivered but I am seriously considering selling/trading the new one for something else. I shouldn't have to install a protector on my lens cover when I keep my phone in a case to begin with. No other premium brand currently on the market has this issue. The irony is how much emphasis HTC obviously put into build quality, only to be negated by something as simple to get right as this.

And another thing that bothers me is that I'd had a chat session with an HTC customer service rep over a week ago before at&t offered to replace my handset and I specifically asked for her to elevate my complaint to a supervisor when she said she'd not heard of anyone else having this problem (could very well be true) but nobody has followed up with me and it's been over a week now. That's wholly unacceptable to me.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I've been following along here and I was wondering:

A) Has anyone here that removed the film kept their lens naked, without putting a protector on it? If so, have you had any issues with the lens actually getting scratched?

B) For those that got their phones replaced or bought one more recently, is the film issue still there? This could be a clue if it's an inherent design flaw or if there was just a bad batch of lenses with the earlier produced phones.

I wouldn't know. HTC tried to charge me and I got the phone back and did the work myself, cancelled my useless insurance, and won't expect them to honor any HTC Advantage deal if they won't even check out a haze on an otherwise perfect phone.... If I sound a bit upset. I am lol. I am done with issues like this on 700 dollar phones, and no cooperation.

I am 1 week in with my replacement, still crystal clear. Started right away with past phone. Crossing fingers.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I'm pretty careful with my m8 and have had a case on it since I've owned it. I'm very disappointed with the camera lens cover, shouldn't they all have been made of glass, anyways I used my fingernail and it worked great! Those of you that are reluctant to try it, it doesn't do any further damage. It just clears it up!

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I have had my M8 for around 3 or 4 weeks now and noticed as many light scratches on my lens same story as many others.

Just thought I would share my experience in this, having followed the advise on this thread and from this guy PSA, _if_your_htc_one_m8_has_a_scratched_camera I used a credit card type thing to rub off the coating then wiped the lens with a screen cleaning cloth (the yellow ones that come with screen protectors).

I was under the impression that it was a film similar to a screen protector but this is not the case at all.. It's more like a coating that's been applied to the lens and it requires you to rub it off and not peel. All in all it took around 15 - 20 minutes to sort.

Any way here are my pictures.

The photos of the M8 were taken on my wife's s4 mini.
I started around the edge first as I was a little apprehensive. You can see where it is scratched and where I rubbed off the coating.

Did all around the edge.

Then the centre

Then a couple of before and after pics

Before (this is what I used to remove the layer).

After.

Before. It's like cataracts i imagine.

After.

The results are pretty good and I'm happy again. I'm going to make a lens cover from a screen cover and be keeping my phone in a sock from now on though!

Lots of scratches on mine. Night shots has lights with lots of flares. I compared it to shots i took when it was new. Same place. No flares before. Now lots of flares. With scratches.

My replacement is coming today!

Excuse me while I sit by my front door with popcorn in hand, waiting for the UPS driver's arrival

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

So... I see a tiny tiny scratch on my lens but it isn't messing with pictures right now. If it gets scratches what's the best way? Some said toothpaste and that seems weird lol

Why does it seem weird? Toothpaste is abrasive and is used for multiple things. Heck, I've seen people recommend this for car dashboards scuffs before although it depends on the material. These were higher end cars too such as Lexus, Acura, Infiniti and Mercedes.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Unfortunately my new lens cover is starting to do the same thing as the old one, there are some scratch marks appearing.. not affecting pictures yet but I will surely perform some dentistry rather than sending it back in.. I have no luck with phones apparently.

Just never would of thought about it.

So if my lens gets badly scratched I can use toothpaste and... Use what to rub on it? And it'll clean it?

Others seem to be using alcohol and q tips and their fingernails to scratch away the coating

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Was your replacement sent from:
Company Name: HTC REPAIR CENTER
Name: SHIPPING DEPT

For some reason I got a shipping label at 8:00AM in the morning, and my phone only arrived at their repair facility at 11:30AM. It was picked up from their facility at 6:00PM.

I hope they didn't ship me a refurb opposed to repairing mine?

Wow that really sucks. And yours was repaired, correct? That's scary in the sense that the repair techs are using defective parts to replace defective parts.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I had this exact problem! Here is my story of how I received a free repair from HTC:

I emailed HTC?s USA President, Jason Mackenzie, directly with my complaint. (I did this over Memorial Day weekend.) I explained my past experience with the M7?which was excellent-- and suggested that the M8 is
somehow defective.

Jason responded within hours and indicated that someone would contact me on Tuesday. On Tuesday, I was called on both my cell and work phone, and I received an email! When I got back with HTC, they offered to
provide an overnight shipping label (both to and from HTC) and they also GUARANTEED that my phone would be repaired FREE OF CHARGE.

Jason Mackenzie?s email address is: jason_mackenzie@htc.com

***In full disclosure, I emailed Jason from my work email address?I am an attorney. Notwithstanding, I think all affected M8 customers should receive this same remedy?and a free case to compensate for going without your phone during the repair. Anyway, give it a shot!

Yea, it was.. We'll see, I'm not getting that haziness in the lens just yet.. I will keep an eye on it though.

I was told they were going to send me a new device, i.e., the meaning of 'exchange' in 'exchange device plan'. Instead, they repaired it.

And the repair lens had scratches. And the repair lens wasn't even flush with the back of the phone. And now my volume rocker is somehow more loose now as opposed to when I sent the phone in.

I swear I could rip my hair out right now. I pay money for a perfect device with one minor defect, and the device they send back to me is worse than when I sent it in. I can't even deal with HTC right now.
