HTC One (M8): Camera Lens Issue

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

There arent many apps that I really need to backup, just a few games. I use Helium in the Play Store to back up my game progress..

If you have music/pictures on the SD Card you just take it out (you have to remove the SIM and SD trays before you send it in anyways). If you store it internally I just connect the phone to the PC and pull it all off like a flash drive. After that I do a factory reset. Oddly enough some of my info, like wifi passwords, were still in there. I got my phone back and it connected no problem back to my network.

Oh alright so I can backup apps with Helium, pictures and music I'll drag onto my computer, and then factory reset and send it in?

Yup, that's what I did. My phone was S-off, Unlocked and it came back that way, hehe.

Lol oh okay, well I'm talking to them right now and she's telling me I would probably have the label by Tuesday. So I'm going to send it in and they'll send me a new phone once they determine if mine is defective. If not I have to dispute the quote they would give me for it.

And what did you tell them to get it done for free?

I actually talked Jason Mackenzie, from HTC, to follow me on Twitter. I messaged him my ticket and serial number and said he would take care of it. Shortly after I got a call from HTC special projects division who told me they would cover the cost.

Maybe I was just lucky.. I was really nice to him about it and told him I loved the phone, blah, blah, blah.. which is true of course.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Wow! I can't believe we let this thread get to page two guys!

Haha. I just got my camera lens protectors from Slick Wraps today! I ordered two and didn't know they came in sets of two, so now I have four protectors for both the main camera and duo camera...the more the better I guess!

I have a couple of those waiting to install on my replacement M8 when it arrives next week. I was wondering if you've had time to try out the camera with the protector installed. Does it affect image quality at all?

Here are some pictures I took. I tried to capture the quality more than anything...

The quality looks like it didn't change. The only thing that did, however, was the capture time: there seemed to be some lag when focusing. Other than that, all else is perfect.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I tried nail polish remover tonight using a q-tip. The camera lens looks even worse on the outside than it did before with all sorts of tiny scratches, but the image quality and haziness is gone, pictures look back to normal!

The focus does seem to react a little slower than in its original state, though.

If you are still seeing scratches, then it hasn't removed the coating completely yet...

Once the coating (film) has been removed, you should have a clear lens.... I used rubbing alcohol/qtip. Once the lens was covered with alcohol, i used my finger nail and scraped off the coating. After that, I then used the alcohol/qtip method again and used a paper towel to then buff the lens. The paper towel and alcohol scraped off what was left of the coating/film and it looked brand new...

I then applied the slickwraps lens protectors, i bought.... but these appeared to have a little haze to them. the slickwraps cover (on the depth lens) was enough to tell the camera that something was blocking it, so I will have to remove it until I can find something else to protect them.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Yep, I used rubbing alcohol and a qtip to finish it iff this morning and all of the scratchiness is now crystal clear, as are my images now. That did the trick! I am not sure I want to put any sort of protective film over it though so I am gonna leave it as is for now.

I have tried the slickwraps lens protector as I mentioned....

The protectors look like they have a second film on them as they appear a tad cloudy... Also, I would get the "The Duo Camera is blocked" notification sometimes. I tried to remove this additional film, but it appears that there isn't one and they just look that way.... So, I just cut up an un-used screen protector I had and use that for the time being... much clearer than the slickwrap I bought....

I am awaiting the Nillkin glass protector and it appears it comes with lens protectors... I under the impression that they are no glass, but film. So, I'll know tomorrow if they do the trick or not.

Question: I know that the side you remove from the plastic goes directly onto the lens, but how about the other side? There isn't an extra layer of plastic protecting the other side of the lens cover, is there? Like when you but a new screen protector, there is "side 1" that you have to remove, then apply to the screen, and then you take "side 2" off; the protector is 'sandwiched' in-between two thinner plastic protectors. I didn't find this on the lens cover, though, which is a bit strange...what if the face of the protector is already scratched?

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Correct.... No side 2 from my findings.... I applied these and even though there was nothing to indicate a "Side 2", these appeared (once installed) that they had a "Side 2" due to them not looking clear to me... So, I made an effort to see if there was a "Side 2" and thus destroyed the 2 lens protectors for the main lens.... I did install the secondary lens cover... but it still looks to me that there is a "Side 2"... As the cover isn't crystal clear and does cause the camera to give me the "blocked" notice on occasion.
