HTC One (M8): Camera Lens Issue

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Have you done anything about this at all?

It also hasn't worked for me, and I have pretty much the same result as you. I've tried a lot of stuff, and for a long time.

Pretty damn annoying, as I had the chance to take some really good photos at an event the other night, but they come out terrible.

I'm thinking about trying to remove the lens cover all together. I done that on my One XL after it had the same problem (but this was from carrying it around in my pocket for 2 years with no protection at all.

If the lens is still hazy, then you haven't removed the bad coating yet....

I applied the alcohol and then used my fingernail to remove most of the film....

Then I buffed it with alcohol and a papertowel....

Buffed out perfectly.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Hi

Glad to see that i am not the only one having this problem. I have written a quick writeup of the problem here. I have not attempted to fix the lens myself. I have returned it and awaiting repair, i am eager to see what they say about the problem here in Norway.

Here is the post by the way: HTC One M8 Camera Lens Problems - Duppeditten

There is also a thread over at another popular Android forum as well addressing this.. HERE and HERE

I am really hoping that after the M7 purple-tint camera problem and the M8 lens issue (which I had on both devices), the M9 will be an unbelievable bit of technological perfection. If only engineers and CEOs read these kind of forums where people express what they truly want they would have the absolute perfect device for that year.. IMO of course. :P

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I tried the Slickwrap and it always appeared hazy..... I switched to the Nillkin Tempted Glass kit.... It came with lens protectors.... installed them and I have been scratch free since....

Are the lens protectors also tempered glass or some other material?

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I noticed scratches all over my camera lens, I was floored because I'm so careful with the phone, so I did some research and found this thread, I ended up using some Meguiares scratch remover to take off the rest of what is a coating on the lens, I then buffed it with with Meguiares nxt wax, looks better than brand new!!

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Have this problem myself on my t-mobile m8. s/n: fa44....

Had the phone for maybe a month, it stays in a holster that is lined with microfiber. I have not dropped it, and from the in and out of the case I use, I have developed scratches. This is the same case I have used with my droidx, and galaxy nexus before it. Neither of which EVER had a scratch on the camera. I think I saw my first scratch 2 weeks in.

I am hesitant to try and remove the film itself, as this really shouldn't be our problem to fix. I'm also hesitant to send it to HTC, as they don't seem to have recognized this officially, and are saying that they are replacing the lens cover. Just seems like you might get a new phone, or a new back, but whose to see the underlying issue has not been fixed, and my replacement will suffer the same fate. Kind of don't want to take matters in my own hands, in case HTC gets off their butts and recalls the impacted units and officially fixes this issue.

But, since that will likely not happen, for those that have removed the film, does the underlying lens seem to be prone to scratches still?

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

you need to remove the film, it WILL affect your pictures, since I used scratch remover and and wax, my lens looks amazing and the clarity of the pictures is back to being amazing

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

So after being extremely cautious and covering up my rear cameras with the nillkin protectors i noticed today that my front facing camera is full of scratches! I'm going to try the alcohol and q tip method and see what happens, hopefully it's just the coating and not the glass (or plastic) that is scratched.

anyone else experience scratches on their front facing camera?

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I just removed the coating with a q tip and alcohol and what a difference! I could not believe the coating came off so easily. There's still an outer ring on the lens which I'll finish off later but at least I know the scratches are merely on the coating.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Anyone know if those Nillkin camera lens protector are sold separately? The only ones I'm finding are sold with their screen protector too, but I already have one installed.

I can't find these for the life of me.

Someone please provide a link because I really don't want to go through 16 pages of this thread looking for it.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Just bought a lens cover for the M8 at SlickWraps. Check them out! (it only costs $2 for the lens cover). And no this is not a spam, just trying to help others out who have scratches on their lens

Here's my $5 rebate coupon! I just got $5 off at Slickwraps

Use it with this 20% coupon to save even more! "ILUV2WRAPITUP2" (put the code in without the quotations)

These covers were OKAY at best. They were a bit scratched and only helped to protect the lens, while maintaining adequate picture quality.

Okay, so to anyone who has gone through with cleaning off the residue on their lens, how long has it been since you did it and has it held up well as a fix? Are you noticing any additional scratches after doing it?

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

So, I first tried to remove the film the other week, but in turn making it worse. I was adamant that mine didn't have the film, and I was just scratching the glass itself. This was with a whole range of different things that have been mentioned in this thread, plus a couple of other solvents. All to no avail, the cover was stuffed!

Just the other day I gave it one last go. If this didn't work, I was going to remove the glass altogether. Just ended up using a qtip and some toothpaste. Surprisingly, it worked! I'd removed the film in the middle, and there's just the ring around the outside left.

Pictures are a lot better, however, they are not perfect. And it isn't focusing properly . Takes a few times to try to auto focus. Does anyone else have this problem at all? I remember when I first got it, it would focus nearly instantly.

That's all well and good that you have got in touch with them, but did you talk about the issue at all? Have they admitted that there is a problem?

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

No he didn't say anything about it. I told him I have it in an otter box and still it got scratches on it..he just apologized for the inconveniences

No scratches since removing the coating. I've always had one hairline scratch, but not over the sensor.

Good to go.
