HTC One (M8): Camera Lens Issue

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

I apologize for not reading through the entire thread but are some of you not removing the gunk on the lenses yourself? I've only had the issue on my front facing lens, just used my fingernail to scratch off the film, took five minutes and worked perfectly, advised a friend to do the same and he had results just as good, as have a few other people I've seen on the sections of the thread I have read.
Why are some of you looking into official repair when there's such a simple and easy fix for the problem? Not trying to be rude at all, just genuinely curious.

In my case, at the time, there were only a few guys who posted about cleaning it. In the event that it did not work, and knowing it was not my fault the scratches were there, I didn't want to mess with it before I had HTC take care of it and hopefully put an updated, pre-cleaned lens cover. If the cleaning had not worked and I made it worse I would have shot myself in the foot by sending it in and having them decline the repair under warranty and charging me $140 and/or shipping to and fro.. :)

Now with the high numbers of people having success by cleaning with toothpaste, rubbing alcohol, etc.. I would not send it in.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Mine started to do this a couple weeks ago. I didn't want to deal with rubbing the film off so I figured I'd give HTC a call and see if they could do anything for me.

I called them, told them the lens was scratched, and they sent me a prepaid shipping label. I didn't even have to hassle with anyone and there were very little questions asked.

I'm going to ship it out in the next few days. I'll post an update when it comes back.

That's your replacement device already with scratches? You did it or it arrived with it?

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Yeah it arrived that way..I thought it was smudged but tried cleaning it with a clean microfiber clothe.. that didn't work

Pain in the side to do but I'd call them and send it back ASAP I suppose.. they MUST know its a problem at this point.

Yeah they should be now.. I sent HTC an email say I g that the one they sent me is scratched too, so they said the next one they send will be 100% inspected before shipping

Sad thing is, it could be 100% inspected, but by the time it gets through the mail to you it might already have started.. lol

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Next time you talk to them, can you please ask what the go is (with this film), and if they are doing anything to rectify it. I'd hate to see HTC lose sales over something like this, but if they don't do anything about it I think it might sway people to get a phone elsewhere.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

How long did the whole warranty process take? I was prepared to be without my M8 for a few weeks but I hope it won't take that long.

I told them I couldn't be without my phone for business purposes so they made me pay $30 for over night shipping

Alright so I just got off the phone with the HTC rep (James)... Super nice guy and I asked him about the film and he said the film is a UV protective coating..

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

Mine is horribly scratched. It doesn't seem to impact pictures though.

I find it odd since the front cover is flawless and one would think it would be the scratch target. I always use a case and if anything the back camera should be well protected vs. the front glass but its the opposite.

I figured that it was there for a reason. Rubbing off the UV filter might have some negative effect on image quality I would imagine? The M8 already washes out images in daylight like crazy, I would think it would be worse without the filter. I'm glad I sent mine in.

UV protective coating is great when it does it's intended job. To filter out UV rays providing a much crisper and cleaner image. However, as easily as the coating is scratched off, it is not providing much usefulness. In this case if HTC really wanted to provide that level of UV filtration, they should have used glass lens covers with UV protection impregnated in the glass (or plastic). Once the coating starts coming off the lens cover is useless.

Ehhhh, I haven't noticed any difference without the coating. UV filters really don't do a ton of noticeable stuff. The actual lens under the cover and the sensor itself probably have more UV protection than the coating ever did. It's just really not very useful to have. For instance I have a screw on UV filter for one of my DSLR lenses that I just use as a lens cap, it makes almost 0 difference in image quality. Using them as lens caps is extremely common among photographers and videographers simply because it's an extra layer that doesn't degrade quality too much when you shoot through it rather than it being an extra layer that improves quality.

Re: HTC One (M8): Camera lens cover issue

For Anybody with a scratch on your camera lens "camera phone or camera" this little experiement just saved me. Wanted to write it up and share: You will THANK ME for this. I fixed mine in 5 mins. Use a clean microfiber towel, rubbing compound and liquid wax. First apply a drop off compound on the len itself and while using the same spot on the microfiber towel, wipe for about a min in circles and along the edges. Then use a clean section of the towel to wipe off residue. To add a bit of UV protection I followed up with Liquid wax. Follow the same process above and your goood to go. PS: it will help your screen protector like it did on my outer box as well ;). Now go enjoy those amazing photos

PS: I used Megiuars Ultimate compound and Megiuars Liquid Gold wax. Same stuff I use on my car :)
