Hello,
First time posting on this forum. I’m writing because I could use some help regarding my upcoming phone purchase here. My renewal is a week from today and I’ve had the HTC Evo 4G LTE for the past 19 months or so. Its efficiency and battery have been on the way down for some time, so it’s pretty much set that I’ll be getting a new phone next week. But overall, I’ve been pretty happy with that and Android in general, so I’ve been leaning towards the HTC One M8 as a result.

I’m currently on Sprint and as of late, their service hasn’t been too bad on my end. I also plan on doing the Easy Pay arrangement they have going at the moment. That includes unlimited data plus a certain amount each month for the phone until it’s paid off, which will still be cheaper than what I’m paying now. This also works for me since it’ll allow me to pay off a phone sooner if I want a new one, along with not having to deal with the two-year contract for now.

That’s where the question comes up. Originally, I was planning to get the HTC One M8 in Gunmetal Gray color. However, the Harman Kardon came up as an option due to the Easy Pay arrangement that it currently has with it. Long story short, getting the Harman Kardon version over the regular M8 would save me over $12 every month until the phone was paid off. I did some research and found out that the only real differences were in the aesthetics of the phones and the music software/hardware. For me personally, aesthetics are not a deal breaker. But I do prefer the Gunmetal Gray color to what the Harman Kardon has to offer. I might be putting a case on it in the future too, but I’m not sure yet which one it would be and how it might affect the visibility of everything else.

In terms of the music software, I do enjoy listening to music when I’m on walks or sitting somewhere for awhile. But it’s not something where I’m terribly picky on the quality either. Most of the tracks I have on my phone are in 320 MP3 and I rarely stream regularly. I don’t really listen to FLAC/WAV versions of tracks on the Evo either as it is, but I haven’t had any issues playing those on the Evo when it's come down to it. The only problems I’ve had with the Evo's audio and its Beats system have been some lagging in the playback, but I fine-tuned the settings to a point where it wasn’t much of an issue in the end. Plus, I’m assuming that the better processor and more current technology will help the recent phones have a leg up on the older ones anyway. So while things like the headphones or ClariFi/Live Stage technology could be fun to tinker with, it’s not something I’m dead set on having.

With that being said, do any of you have any opinions on which way to go here? Saving $12 and having slightly better options with audio is something to consider here, but if the regular M8 is decent enough in audio and looks a bit better, that could mean something too. Would you still take the one with the $12 discount per month though? And are there other issues between the two phones I haven’t mentioned that are worth considering here?

Any help would be appreciated, so I thank you in advance for that and sitting through this!

Like you, I came from having the Evo 4G LTE and it was fine at the time. I was going to get the gun etal gray M8 when it came out, but when it came time for me to buy, The Harmon Kardon Edition came out. I liked the aesthetics better and being a touring Audio Engineer (I mix concerts), having a little extra in the audio department sounded fun to me. The phone comes with the Harmon Kardon earphones which have a special setting in the app, which makes them sound pretty good. There are also other pre sets for other models of headphones.
Originally the HK Edition costs a little more. I'm not sure how much real difference there is between it and the regular version. I'm sure it sounds good too.
If I were to choose again today, I would go with the HK Ed again, especially if it saved me a little money. I love this phone. My next phone will be the M9 when it comes out, hopefully in an HK Edition....

I personally have the HK edition and I like it very much.
Compared to the regular M8, you don't really get 'that much more', but i find that HK clarify makes a noticeable difference when playing compressed audio (MP3, streaming, etc)... There are some other settings for when the phone is connected to headphones (livestage), but i actually preffer to have this off and just have clarify. Another thing is if you ever want to play un-compressed audio (FLAC) you cannot do this on the regular version.
I like the headphones that come with the HK edition and that is always a plus.
Finally, HK can stream via bluetooth with HK Clarify enabled. From what I seeen, the regular M8, boomsound is not available when streaming via bluetooth....

I, too, came from the EVOLTE on Sprint. I have had the HTC One HK edition since mid September. The headphones are a plus. Clarify and Live Stage are noticeably different. The bluetooth streaming is indeed impressive. The phone is markedly faster than the EVOLTE, even with the final upgrade. On Amazon today, the HK edition is a penny with a 2 yr contract. Can't beat that. I got it for $49 back in September. Hey, color choice is important to some people. I like the sound quality, and I like the black/champagne color. Sure, fingerprints show, but you have to be a bit more OCD than I am to notice. You can't lose with the regular or HK edition, but now that the price is essentially identical, or lower with the HK, might as well get it. Happy Thanksgiving, by the way to all.

I'm just thankful that the HK edition exists so I can have the enhancements on my regular M8, even if I only use clari-fi for mp3s

Yep the HK version is a nice device. I just paid my bill in Sprint and I had the original HTC EVO 4G. Sprint was first with the 4G device. I like sticking it out with HTC they haven't disappointed. I've started doing HEAVY research in the M8 HK and the 'one up' has it at a low price of $15 a month. Decisions, Decisions ...

Still only $39.99 for the HTC M8 HK on amazon with 2 year contract.

No. There are ways to flash the HK modifications to a normal M8, sounds like firmware flashing, so you probably have to have SOFF, which will cost you $25.

Just curious... has anyone determined if these mods impact the sound in a real way? Or is this little more than a glorified EQ and something I could probably achieve using PowerAmp?

Clari-fi definitely makes a difference. But if you are using high quality mp3 or flac, the improvement is negligible.

Thanks. And yes, I use 320Kbps CBR.

I was wondering if maybe they were using a higher end DAC. When I looked at Harman's web site, it states the following, "If you download, stream or play music on a digital device, your music is digitally-compressed. Compression can remove up to 90% of the audio details originally recorded in your favorite songs – so you're left listening to a reduced version of the real thing."

This is at best misleading and at worst completely untrue.
