As the title says, my HTC One M8 screen keeps turning on without me even touching it.

I have already done a factory reset and even deleted as many apps as it would allow me to. This has happened on both the stock software and the very latest version of Android.

I've tried disabling the wifi and data too.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Android Central! Are there any sources of magnetic fields nearby? If there's a magnetic field nearby, it may trigger the smartcover sensor, which turns the screen off; but then if the field goes away (or fluctuates), it would trigger the screen to come back on.

Not that I am aware of. I've never had a problem with any previous phones, both Apple and Android. Apart from when I first woke up earlier today, my phone has behaved normally without any issues all day/evening. I even have my phone in the same position on my desk where the strange occurrences were happening late last night. And yet it is behaving perfectly fine now.

I rang my service provider who I purchased the phone from a few weeks ago and they advised me to take it to one of their shops, which I am going to do tomorrow morning. I'm genuinely baffled as to what could be causing it.

Thank you for the welcome! If anyone else has any suggestions, please throw them at me :)

EDIT: Something else has just occurred to me. In similar fashion to the screen randomly turning on, there have been times when I have been scrolling through a menu on the phone or be in a sub-menu, when it will suddenly return to the top of the page.

Same thing started happening to me yesterday. Headphone jack won't work either. Any help?

Same thing has been happening to my phone! Will randomly turn on without touch, randomly refreshes the browser or returns to the top and while typing it kicks me out of the keyboard. Does not happen all the time but just randomly.

Does this happen with the charger plugged in, not plugged in, or both? If it only happens when plugged in, it could be the USB cable going bad. One symptom of that is erroneous screen touches, or turning the screen on when it thinks the cable is plugged in after being shorted.

Could also be the port itself too, which happened recently on mine. My replacement should be here tomorrow.

i'm having these problems as well. just starting acting up a few days ago. tried everything, nothing helps.

same problems as above - screen randomly turning on, browser refreshing and being kicked out of messages.

extremely annoying.

Same exact problems here, just started today. Though I have an m7.

I noticed the same thing happening on my M8 when I was charging it with my work laptop. I wasn't transferring any data as the laptop has a sleep and charge feature.

Charging it on AC seems to work fine though.

I'm having the exact same issues listed here, here are my specs:

HTC M8
Android version 5.0.1
HTC Sense Version 6.0
Software Number 4.20.631.2

This is supremely frustrating. Halp!

Any help please all mentioned above happened to mee it was good then i did factory rest it went good but again when i came home it happened

Made a username on here just to post here that I too am having the same issues.

It was fine prior to me rooting the phone. When I rooted, I stayed on 5.0.2 Android and flashed the ViperOne rom. All was good. I started running into this issue along with car mode randomly turning on by itself. I disabled the app and eventually just removed it, thinking it was the problem.

I went S-Off to flash the international firmware since I wasn't receiving calls due to HD-Voice not being compatible with the rom I had downloaded. All was well until a couple of days with the rom and the phone started turning on by itself, when plugged in and when not plugged in. Also having issues with the phone backing out of messages/refreshing on its own.

Asking for help on XDA, I was instructed to provide a catlog of when it would do this. Attached is the catlog if anybody is interested. Diagnosing this, the OP concluded that he found this line of code a few times, which is how many times the screen came on:

SCREEN_BRIGHT_WAKE_LOCK ACQUIRE_CAUSES_WAKEUP ON_AFTER_RELEASE SuperSU Receiver Wakelock 0x3000000a null

Been clearing SuperSU to see what it is that is requesting access and waking the screen up but nothing has been posted in the logs when the screen turns on, so I'm stumped and at a dead end. I'm thinking of flashing an RUU prior to 5.0.2 to see if the problems stays. I've tried flashing a different rom (SkyDragon) and this issue still came back.

Yo guys, sorry for the bump of the old thread but i finally found out what keeps the display turning on.

For me, it wasn't the software, but the USB/Power connector. Yes, indeed.

Starting out, i had the m7 for quite a few years when the display suddenly turned on randomly. I sold it and got the m8, same problems after 1,5 years. But now the display not only turned on, it tried to access the car mode sometimes and i was like wtf?

Apparently, the socket/connector (? sorry my english isnt really good) wears out after a while and produces bad contacts, so the phone believes an adapter is being plugged in. I grabbed a nail scissor (any other small tool like a knife will also do the job) and bent the upper and lower sides a bit, also the usb thing itself.

Suddenly the display stopped turning on by itself and the car mode NEVER asked for a startup again. I've had those display issues daily and now they're completely gone for more then 3 weeks.

I hope i can help someone who's googling for the same question.

I have the HTC ONE M8 (since August 2014), I really like the phone and there really aren't any new phones in my opinion that hold up to this one...the closest I have found is the LG V20 but that one doesn't even have stereo speakers and the battery rating is lower than the M8.

Anyway, I found this because my HTC ONE M8 is turning the screen on while it is trying to charge. I believe it is the result of a bad charger port which I ordered a new one that comes with a tool repair kit. This has probably caused many M8 owners to get new phones by now so I am likely posting this for a very small segment of people.

Why is the phone screen turning on? Well, I believe that the phone thinks that the charger cord is being unplugged and plugged back in constantly. What happens is this, say I plug the phone in while there is 64% charge on the phone over night. When I get up in the morning I find the phone screen on and the remaining charge at 34%. It lost charge because the screen was on all night.

So, now in the morning the phone has lost half its charge and I need it for work. I keep it plugged in by my side and I get error messages about slow charge, change the charge cable or a message that the phone is not charging and again to change the cable. My cables are all new, some are HTC and some are generic. All were used fine until recently.

My phone is also experiencing other symptoms, for instance, the small red light that indicates that the phone is charging is on but after an hour of being hooked up I look at the phone (the screen is off) and the phone has not gained any charge. So, I will then turn the phone off (I will not turn it off during business hours) and sometimes while the phone is off it just will not charge.

Lastly, the charge cable seems to be a little loose in the port, wobbles left to right like there is dirt in the port. I have cleared out the port using various techniques and the port is clear of all dirt.

So, all things are pointing toward a bad charger port. I am waiting for the new OEM port and speaker cover plates which should be in this week. I will attempt to bend the existing port as suggested above before I make the replacement but I will not attempt it until I have the new port on hand for replacement if it breaks.

The one good thing, there are a lot of youtube videos about charger port replacement for the M8 and the phone is fairly simple to repair by laymen. It is really built much like a mini computer. The hardest part is actually opening the phone. If it were iPhone, I would not attempt it, those phones are a mess internally with lots of little metal clips, washers etc that fall out of place and I expect that is by design which is why I won't by any apple products. The HTC is much simpler in design for repair, plug and play type of design.

If all else fails, since HTC has gone BACKWARDS since the M8, I will likely replace it with the LG V20 which is too bad. I have owned HTC since 2012, my family has purchased 4 of their phones but going forward, with HTC going backward I am leaving them which is disappointing.

the closest I have found is the LG V20 but that one doesn't even have stereo speakers and the battery rating is lower than the M8.

I've moved from the M8 to the LG G4 and now the V20. The battery life of the V20 has pleasantly surprised many, so don't be so quick to write that off. I also preferred front facing stereo speakers, but I'm ok with the trade-off. The V20 speaker is louder overall, and has more detail to the sound. So it's not a total loss.

Thank you so much for sharing! My M9 has been randomly turning the screen on for months and just started constantly starting car mode for no apparent reason. This has fixed the problem. Amazing! Really appreciate it!!

I just made an account so I can back this up. I can't believe it actually worked...
