HTC One (M8): screen won't turn back on

Hey all brand new HTC One M8 owners out there. I have experienced a problem with my new HTC One M8 from AT&T. It was working great until I went for a walk and used an app called "Run Keeper". Once I started the app and locked the screen, I was not able to turn the screen back on. Nothing works beside hard restarting the phone. However, with the screen unable to turn back on, the phone is still on and working. I was still getting info about my walk every 5 minutes like it usually does. I thought it was just the app's problem. However, this morning when my alarm on the phone went off this morning, I could not get the screen to turn on but the alarm sure was loud enough to keep me awake. I had to hard restart it. I went back to sleep and I did not know by restarting the phone while the alarm is going off only snoozed it. Therefore, my alarm went off again short after. It happened again. Screen would not turn on while the BoomSound is sounding the loud alarm.
Anyone has the same problem? Please let me know if there is any solution out there....

I can't really take it back since AT&T has not started to sell this phone in the store. I'll try to contact HTC to see if there is any similar complaint

You can still take it back and either return for a different phone or have the online customer service send you another one they will send it out and you can return the other with the returnable I had to do this with the gs4 3 times when it released last spring

I just had this problem today. Irks the hell out of me because I spent so much time setting up the phone. Have to take it to the store tomorrow on my own work time. Makes me think the G3 is gonna be in my future soon.

Was scrolling through the M8 forum and came across thus. In having the same issue with my galaxy s5. My phone is responsive (meaning my back and tasks button light up and turn off) but the screen does not. Starting to look like an OS problem

After a week of that problem, I did take it back to the store to exchange for a new device. Now, the phone has not have any issue since. I think you and I just had the very few trouble devices. That's what happened when you mass produce to meet the crazy launch date. Haha

That's great to hear. I'm actually at Best Buy now. Really wish there was a way to make a must between the s5 and m8 :(

probably can do a return if you get it from BestBuy since they have 30 days return policy, but i'm not sure if it's still in place for smartphone

Hello,

I have had a similar issue. I have been a 100% Android fan until this phone.. I had the HTC incredible from the day it came out until about 2 weeks ago and didnt have any issues until the week before I got the HTC One (M8). Now, this phone crashes on me every 10 minutes. If I tap through too many screens or accidentally hit an app then go back home it crashes. If I play a game for too long and more than one person texts me, it crashes. Worst of all, yesterday, I plugged the phone in and as it was charging I went to text someone. It had a 75% charge but the screen just went black I haven't been able to turn the phone on ever since or to a hard reboot it. Nothing has worked..

On the front of the phone, there is a very small red/orange light that is still there, to the left of the screen side camera. I think that is usually on when the phone is charging but that is the only thing that has been on since yesterday.. Pretty disappointing after all of the hype..

Sounds like maybe you just got a bad unit, maybe swap it out for another one and see if that one works for you.

Re: HTC One M8 screen won't turn back on

if you were backing up the device with HTC's cloud tool getting a replacement up and running requires little effort. The back up captures all personal content but also general settings, home screen settings, and widgets.

Re: HTC One M8 screen won't turn back on

Yesterday and today I noticed that when waking my phone, the lock screen has been replaced by what you'd see if you were using the dot case. The large time display and weather icon rather than the typical lock screen. I don't use the dot case. I know this behavior is magnet-driven, but I don't keep my phone near any magnets. Coupled with the non-functional stock weather widget and display that isn't flush, I'm taking this phone back. I'm really sad, I loved this device in the store and for the 1st few days of owning it. I don't think I wan't another one. I may very well change to the S5. Dunno yet.

I've had a similar problem, my phone hasn't crashed as much as you say yours did, but my phone would randomly exit apps and my screen went black while it was on the charger. It was at about 77% like yours.

Mine has just done the same, ive had the phone for over a month now, its been great appart from this :-( I was simply watching youtube videos and it froze, so i tapped the standby button to kind of wake it up but the screen didnt come back on. I held the button in for few seconds (to turn it back on) and I felt the lil vibration that it does...but no screen. Theres a really dim light, kind of like the one when its charging...only dimmer. Ive tried the hard reset but getting nothing (htc website says hard reset doesnt work while fast boot is enable! ha..stupid!)

I used to have the HTC One X and had this same problem 3 times! Im starting to lose faith in HTC which is a shame because they provide me with great customer care (in the uk) but good customer service is useless with a bad product. I'm so annoyed, ive got a party this weekend and really wanted to use the great camera.

I fixed mine by holding the power button and the volume up button for 10 seconds or so. This forces the phone to reset even if it is locked up systemically.

well that worked for me also. I was actually trying to hold the power button and the down on the volume then seen your comment and tried and it worked thanks much. I think I might still go swap it out before it happens after the 30 days and I end up paying or not getting a new one. Thanks again.

I have a more extreme issue. My phone works fine except I can't see nothing because the phone won't turn on. It still rings, receives messages turns the flashlight on takes screenshots but I cannot see anything. This is crazy.

thank you thank you the_degenerate my m8 would not come on and i tried everything except power and volume up instead i pushed power and volume down thank you :D
