HTC One M9: My bitter disappoinment

So their saying the battery life is worse on the M9 than the M8 even though it has a bigger battery?

Yeah, that's what has been showing up in battery life comments on the M9 reviews. Maybe it will be fixed with updates down the track, I'm not sure.

I'm one of those people who will be moving to the Galaxy S6 from the M9. First thing I'll do with the S6 is throw a launcher on it (can't stand touchwiz) and I'll look into some stock android rom down the track. Never felt that way with the HTC phones I've owned. Always felt Sense was a really fast and great looking UI.

Actually wish HTC released their Sense launcher on the Play Store. I'd snap it up.

Still though, I firmly believe anyone who buys an M9 will be pleased with it. It's not as if it's a bad phone in any respect. You could argue that X and Y are better on other phones, but the whole experience of the M9 I believe would be enjoyable to anyone who purchases it.

I just read an article on Android and Me that the unlocked version of the M9 will be available from HTC tomorrow and that AT&T and T-Mobile will start selling it tomorrow. They say Sprint and Verizon are keeping quiet but I just called Sprint and they said it will be available for preorder tomorrow starting at midnight tonight. I hope that's true. Cause I paid 500 bucks to upgrade 2 lines early just now and they billed my account which I was told couldn't happen. So I am excited cause were turning in 2 x M8's and getting $510 bucks. So all we have to pay is the $199 and of course activation fees. But the Sprint warehouse is here in my town so I am hoping to get it pretty quick maybe by Monday. They said pre orders will get before the 10th expect 5-7 business days but I've always gotten phones within a couple days to the warehouse being in Louisville.

It seems to me this thread has the same specs as all other threads on new phones:

  • Posters who sound like spurned lovers
  • Posters who warn of the manufacturer's imminent demise
  • Posters who argue vehemently about specs .0001% of the market segment cares about
  • Posters who speculate wildly without having actually held the device
  • Posters who had no intent of ever purchasing the device in question because they're brand loyal to some other device

You're of course entitled to this opinion but I think it's wrong. Touchwiz doesn't appear to have become better looking or performing enough to throw out it's well earned bad reputation among the tech community. So if you were among those of us who shun Samsung due to TW before, nothing's changed now. And battery life is lackluster. I personally think Samsung are the ones who have been lagging behind ever since the S3.

As for the M9. I agree with some of the others. Camera is an improvement. A phone cam doesn't have to be the clear leader above all others to take good photos. I also think HTC was in a lose-lose scenario with design. If they stay with the design that has worked for them, you guys complain. If they revamped it you same people would all be posting "omg this is awful, why did they change a good design??"
HTC also did a good thing in not going 4k. Battery tech is NOT advanced enough to make 4k phones have good battery life. Thank you for showing some common sense HTC (no pun intended). Blinkfeed is another issue. Never been a fan of this feature. I would much rather see BF hidden in the app drawer as a simple app that I can either choose to use or ignore.

Overall, the M9 would be in my top two picks for 2015 so far, Samsung wouldn't be on my list at all, as usual.

The M9 will be on sale in a month like the HTC Facebook phone. If you plan on buying an M9, just wait a few weeks. The price will significantly drop.

After years of owning HTC products, I'm also beeing forced to buy the S6 lol. I know every time I look at the S6 I'm going to be like "Damn you HTC"

I'm going to give them another year to make a good camera. I love the phones, but I need a SPECTACULAR camera. My wife has a Canon DSLR and I know we're not going to get that quality out of our phones. Next year, I may have to step outside my comfort zone if they cannot get the camera right. That said, my M9 will be here on Monday and I'll be sure to give that camera the rundown. I'm excited!

If it is true that there are some challenges that the M9 camera is having, if those are due to software and post-processing then does that mean that the HTC camera app that is in the Play Store is the means that they can improve this through app updates? Or will this only be improved through actual firmware updates?

No, it's a hardware issue. No app or software will be able to fix the M9's camera. If you want a great smartphone with a camera you should buy an S6 or iPhone 6.

The M9 and Nexus 6 have faster animations to make it look faster than the S6, but you can always change animation speeds on the S6 to match M9 and Nexus 6 speeds.
However, the M9 stutters and so does the Nexus 6. Don't even try to debate me on this, as you would be contradicting Anandtech.

The S6 is the first Android phone without any lags and stutter in general UI use, so it is very impressive on Samsung's part to finally rid of those pesky Android stutters.

We're complaining because there is a much better-looking and better build-quality phone being released at the same time frame (AKA Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge).
People who have the M8 who tried out the S6 at BestBuy admitted that the S6 felt WAY better than their M8.
If Samsung played it safe like last year, I don't think anyone would be railing on HTC.

Heh, the funny thing is that the S6 STILL has better battery life than the M9 even with a much faster processor, higher screen resolution and lower battery capacity. Sure, the S6 would have even better battery life if Samsung stuck with 1080p, but there's no point whining over hypothetical scenarios. The fact of the matter is that the S6 has superior battery life to the M9.

Overall, the M9 would be in my top two picks for 2015 so far, Samsung wouldn't be on my list at all, as usual.

You're entitled to your opinion, but the S6 is objectively superior to the M9 in almost every metric short of front-facing speakers and expandable SD card slot.

Lies, what are you basing this on?

Sick of hearing you repeat yourself over and over. The S6 doesn't even come close to the build quality of the M9 and to claim they look better is just ludicrous! The non edge version especially just looks like every god awful Galaxy that has come before it.

Again completely false, superior would suggest it lasts hours and hours more. In reality it doesn't last any longer what so ever - Adam

I don't buy that. There are many international forum participants that have posted photos examples after successive OTAs on the unlocked phone.

And hasn't it been confirmed that this is the same sensor in several other phones?

My experiences with the M8, Nexus 6, S6 at BestBuy, and Anandtech's part 1 review of the M9. Josh directly said that the M9's UI stuttered frequently. Are you going to debate me on this?
Contrary to what Android fans say, all Android devices not named the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge still have that annoying stutter from time to time. I have to give props to Samsung for finally fixing that.
I don't know why htc and nexus/stock fans keep denying that Samsung leap-frogged ahead of everyone in UI optimization.
When I had the S2 and the S3, I admitted freely that Samsung was behind in UI optimization. Why? Because it was the truth.
Now it is your turn to admit that it is htc and google that's behind. Play fair. You railed Samsung for being behind in UI optimization and now you have to rail on htc for being behind in optimization.
People like me with no emotional attachment to corporations can do this easily. Other people will find this difficult.

Unless you've held the devices in your hand, I'm afraid I can't take your words seriously. I'd rather trust Ruddock and my own experiences.

PhoneArena, GSMArena, Tweakers.net and chip.de would like to disagree with you.

Hey, guess what? Those of us who ordered already, we made up our minds! The debate is over. For us, THE M9 SPANKS THE GRANNY PANTIES OFF THAT "SEXY" MARMALADE LADY GAGA FOOFOO *FART NOISE* S6 EDGE *FART NOISE AGAIN BECAUSE YOU WOULD LOVE FOR ME TO GIVE YOU TWO*!!!

I've not seen the anandtech review, but every other review I have watched for this phone have not mentioned a stutter issue once. All I've heard is how fast and snappy it is, no stutter. So it appears anandtech is going against everyone else.

Well I just checked out the S6 and the edge. It is not comfortable to hold at all. Edges are sharp and because of the flat back the edges are all that you are holding. The volume and power button are not easy to use because I feel like I'm going to drop it because it just does not feel secure in my hands.

I'm a long time HTC fan. I have had an HTC Evo, Evo 3d and my current phone, the m7. I'm sure for an upgrade and honestly I'm leaning very much towards one of the s6's. I feel terrible about it but the number one reason is the camera. Mine current one is garbage. This is my second unit die to the purple tint and this one had it too. I feel let down by HTC. That being said I'm torn. I love blinkfeed, Zoe, sense and the HTC one design. I dislike all the cheesy Samsung gimmicks. I have a tough decision ahead of me.

You are making far too much sense for the internet. Please stop before you break it.
