HTC phone blocks FoxFi & PdaNet tethering?

"Open Garden" has a lot of issues, not the least of which being that it is not "open" at all.

Haha. A more appropriate way of looking at it is not that it's open, more like that one Window in your home the guy looks for that wants to rob you that you forgot to lock. ;)

It is an alternative, but not a solution.

Pdanet/foxfi do not support htc phones and never will unless you run a custom ROM. HTC has special code in the framework that blocks all tethering besides the stock provided app (which you have to pay for).

Pdanet works fine as a wired tether to my laptop with my HTC EVO 4G. I can even turn on WIFI Share and use my laptops WIFI to be able to use my iPad. The Foxfi wireless tether worked through ICS, and was broken when I updated to Jelly Bean.

Not with Linux it doesn't.
And no WiFi means more effort to connect.
And having to remember and drag around cable.
And it won't work with tablets.

For me, it is not a suitable replacement for WiFi tethering, unfortunately.

Sorry, no experience with Linux. With Windows 8 it works fine, and yes you have to carry around a cable. If I need to use my iPad, I use the WIFI share function on the desktop and then I have WIFI for it.

I have PdaNet+ / FoxFi and it works fine on my HTC One with a WIndows 7 laptop- in all modes, wifi included. And, I am on the grandfathered unlimited plan.

There is no WiFi tethering support in PDANet nor FoxFi with an unrooted Sprint HTC One, HTC One X, HTC One S, or HTC Evo LTE running the current OS versions unless something very significant changed very recently.

just for clarity - does pdanet wired tethering work on the evo 4g lte on jellybean? wanted to know before i update...
