HTC Sense email app or gmail app?

Just got my Aria this week, and trying to figure out the best way to work my 2 gmail (1 personal and 1 Google Apps) accounts.

I hear the talk about the advantage of the gmail app having push capability. I know I want push from a timing standpoint and a battery life standpoint. However, I really would enjoy the Sense stock email integration with "friends" and the email widget.

I hear that I can set up the gmail as an exchange account and get push emails that way, but I can only do one exchange account per phone. Since I have two gmail accounts, I couldn't get both to work this way.

However, my personal email is the more important email of the two (ha!) in terms of timely push emails and integration with "friends". I guess I could set up the personal email as an exchange account and either set the google apps account up as just a regular imap account, or set the google apps account up in the gmail account. If I set it up as a regular imap account in the stock email app, it would use more battery life since it wouldn't be push, but that email isn't as important (since I will usually be at my desk when I receive those emails) so I could set a longer pull frequency.

Any thoughts to any of this?

Thanks,

Maybe I'm missing something, or maybe the Aria is different, but...

On my Evo, the Gmail app will let me add multiple gmail accounts. And only Gmail accounts. And I believe it will do real time syncing will all of them. The Gmail app doesn't do anything with Exchange accounts.

The htc email app will do exchange accounts, but as you say only 1.

If both your accounts are in gmail, just set them both up using the gmail app. It will do automatic background syncing for both. No need for an exchange account at all.

What I did, because I found the HTC Mail app was killing my battery, was I went to gmail and said upload all 5 of my email accounts. It setup nice labels and such for it.

Then I used the gmail app. Gmail pulled all my pop accounts without a problem, and centralized all my email.

Then for exchange, I just use touchdown, because I want to keep my work and business emails separate....

You also have the option for two third party applications:

--MailDroid (yes I am the dev)
--K-9 Mail

use the Gmail app for all of your Gmail accounts. use the HTC Mail app for everything else.

enjoy!

Sorry for not being clear. The point of my post was that I would prefer the HTC mail app because of the integration of the mail in the rest of HTC sense. I currently have both gmail accounts running through the Gmail App, and it works flawlessly, with the exception of the integration with HTC sense, which isn't possible in the GMail app.

I was trying to think through the proper setup to attempt to get the best of both worlds...push email and HTC sense integration.

Is there a way the copy and paste in the Gmail app? I'm using these HTC mail app primarily because I can copy and paste in it...

You can hook your gmail accounts into sense and then turn off the notifications. That way you will only be notified by the gmail app when you get messages. I'm pretty sure you can also set it to only check for mail when you ask it to, so it won't be polling all the time for messages.

I currently use the gmail app for my gmail and maildroid for my other accounts (hotmail, yahoo, and work IMAP). I don't have exchange so I don't need that functionality. When maildroid gets the ability to archive (which I know he's working on eventually) I will use maildroid exclusively. And my Sense still has access to my gmail for contacts.

Edit: Sorry for the double post. Work computer sucks.

Thanks. I thought about this, but wondered how much size this would take up on the phone, having duplicate email accounts.

I just double checked and you can turn notifications off but you can't stop it from downloading the email. What you CAN do, though, is have it download once a day, which is way better than every 4 hours or so. As far as space it takes up it depends on what kind of email you're getting and how many you get.

OK, I set things up this way. I have the Gmail app to notify of new emails, but to just sync 1 day of emails. I have the HTC app to only check once a day (I could set it to manual download, but gonna try once a day for now), not to notify me of new emails, but to download new emails whenever I click on the app.

This isn't perfect, but the only perfect option would either to have the HTC app enable push email or have the gmail app integrate with Sense.

Next, I might try setting up my personal mail through the gmail exchange and see if I like that better. That supposedly uses push email. My other gmail account could use the gmail app, since I don't really care for those emails to integrate with sense.

I believe that what you are talking about doing by using your gmail as a push server was an article on adroidcentral at one point. I remember reading it. If I remember correctly what it will do is alert you when you have email on the other non-gmail account. This will not work with Yahoo, though, so if that's your other provider you'll need to pay them to allow gmail to do this. You will still have to open a mail app of some kind to check the email itself. It stops the phone from needing to poll at all, though, so it could save some battery.

My other email account is a google apps account, so I am using the gmail app for it as well. However, I don't need these emails to integrate with Sense, so they are fine to stay in the Gmail app.

If I can confirm that the HTC app uses push email for their exchange accounts, and I can get gmail through this, then I will have what I want. I will have two different email apps for my two different email accounts, but I don't guess this is a big deal.

Hi. I do like the htc mail application. My question is can I get push notifications for gmail through the htc mail app? Or will it do the "every hour" or whatever time it's set to check?

I use both. I have the gmail app for my gmail account, and I use HTC mail for my various other email accounts.

While I love the push feature of the gmail app, the one thing that I FREAKING HATE AND PISSES ME OFF EVERY TIME I EVEN THINK ABOUT IT is that the gmail app doesn't have copy/paste. So, any time you get a tracking number sent to my gmail account I have to forward that email to one of my accounts that I use HTC mail with and then copy out of there before I can go to UPS, USPS, FedEx, etc.

What is the integration with sense that Gmail lacks? I'm wondering what I'm missing.

In the People app, when you view a contact, you can see all of that person's social network updates, events, emails - that last one pulls the list of emails from the htc email app...

I don't understand what this htc sync you guys are talking about. I use only the gmail app and all of contacts from google sync perfectly with sense.

If you go to menu in gmail app and hit more, select text is an option for copy/paste. Hit select text and in the email use your finger to select the part you want copied and once you lift your finger it copies the highlighted text to your clipboard. Not pretty but it works.
