HTC Thunderbolt - Deleting files on SD while hooked to Mac doesn't free space

After deleting files in Finder (when connecting phone to the mac), the files are gone (both as searched in phone or Finder), but the space is not freed. Is there a way to free up this space without reformatting the card?
