HTC Thunderbolt Vs. iPhone 4

Home screen widgets is a biggie. Custom ROMS is also a biggie. Replacing kernels and overclocking is big. Real multitasking is big.

I'm not entirely educated on what a jailbroken iphone can do, though.

However, I highly, highly doubt that the iPhone 5 will support 4G. Apple has a track record of rejecting existing technology that will add bulk to the phone or have negative effects on battery life and performance, and 4G will do both. It's simply too new, and a standard has not quite been decided on (although it looks like it'll be LTE). Remember that the original iPhone did not have 3G capability, even though it definitely existed back then.

I don't know. Every US carrier is pushing 4g to the max right now. Apple would be committing suicide by not making the next model LTE capable.

Also, when you say "custom rom" do you basically just mean an app that isn't on the marketplace? I'm also not very educated on kernals at the moment either. All I know is that android runs a linux kernal.

youre spot on and thats coming from an ex hardcore Iphone user.

i still stand by the fact that Starcraft on Android is awesome, and there are no good torrent apps for iphone

I thought flash has been posted to the iphone. And this multi tasking aurgument is getting old nothing multi task is well as webos but honestly I will take ios multi task over androids implementation. widgets is the only biggie to me in can care less about custom roms or removing bloatware if the product just works which in android land isn't the case most of the time that's why we have custom roms etc. Oh and what bloatware does the iphone come with and I'm talking about carrier bloat. The iphone can do skype video and netflix. Can also dualboot android so the question becomes what is better for you But I'll still take android due to google services and not being locked into what jobs thinks is the perfect phone for me

Love my android, but I got to give the camera quality to the IPhone. The build quality and design of the phone is spectacular. If you add an Android operating system in that thing you got probably the best phone ever made. So if you jailbreak an IPhone then you get what Android users take for granted at stock. It's just when the rooting comes to play is where the men are seperated from the boys. IPhone was designed for simple folk and I appreciate that. Android phones are for those that love tweeling their phones to their very liking.

I agree 100% I'm not going to knock Apple for making a stellar device the thing is beautiful, I also had an OG iPhone and the 3G the thing that annoyed me was the lack of customization on the phone and how locked down it was. My Droid right now is amazing overclocked to 1.1 GHz, Gingerbread thanks to CM7 nightlies, wireless tether, titanium backup for my apps and data and launcher pro plus for custom dock and homescreens.

It's not for everybody so perhaps you will be happy with iPhone but for me Android is the way to go as it suits my tastes.

As for your argument that Apple would probably include 4G in the iPhone 5 it's plausible if it comes to Verizon but I don't see that happening until January 2012 unless they really want to piss off all the newly adopted Verizon Appletard 4 people. AT&T's network currently isn't even 4G, they're just saying as such to not be left in the dust by the other carriers. Until they implement LTE I don't think we'll see a 4G iPhone till next June IMO.

I'll just throw in a couple of cents, I think you're looking at different fruits here. Jailbroken ios devices are about as good of a compromise as you can get between stability and choice...but if you're a tinkerer, and you bore easily, get a top tier android phone. I guarantee you will not get tired of it anytime soon. The customization options, especially on an htc device, are practically endless. I know people are throwing a lot of terms at you, but it's really not possible to list ALL of the ways that you can tweak android devices. Suffice it to say that there are really talented devs tirelessly working on new tweaks like, all the time!
One hard piece of evidence that I will submit, a little thing that's a big deal to me- the swype keyboard. Do they have something like that on ios jailbreak now? It's been a while, I really don't know. If not, that's a pro in the android column.
Also consider some of the crazy things coming out soon, like the moto atrix and the xperia play...these will be two different kinds of amazing innovation, changing what a phone IS. Atrix makes me almost want to switch to at&t.
Almost.

+1 Swype is the Shizz!! so awesome I had it installed on my Droid but didn't use it too much as I had the physical keyboard but when I get my TBolt that will be my main method of input for sure! It's also been awhile for me since I've kept up with anything iPhone frankly cause I could care less but if swype could be installed on a jailbroken iPhone that would be awesome.

doesn't rooting void most warranties if not all?

so basically what I've gotten out of this so far is that an android has flash.. is there anything else?

Doesn't jailbreaking void the warranty? I know you can take a jailbroken phone back to stock, but you can also take a rooted phone back to stock as well.

If you don't want to void your warranty at all that would be comparing a stock iphone to a stock android. In that case the android's capabilities would be comparable to a jailbroken iphone, but without the effort. Think about what a jailbroken iphone can do compared to a stock iphone.

If you're okay jailbreaking your iphone, you shouldn't have any qualms about rooting an android phone. I haven't rooted myself but I have read up on it. There are programs that are basically 1 click and you're rooted. There are some that are fairly easy to get back to stock, there are some that make it more difficult to go back to stock.

Roms are basically different versions of OS's. Maybe you want to put Gingerbread on your phone but the official build isn't out yet. Once they release it to the devs it's not long and you can put it on your phone. Maybe you'd like a custom version of the OS, there are as many options to choose from as there are devs writing them. The drawback is some may lose some functionality at first (camera doesn't work, wifi is disabled, etc.), but the devs are usually pretty good about working the bugs out. If not, switch to a different Rom or go back the phone's original build.

As far as kernels, you can set your cpu's operating speed & voltage (over or underclocking). Turn it into a speed demon or back it down and increase your battery life.

From what I have read, a jail broken iphone gives alot of the same functionality as an out of the box android. So in that case you could do basically the same thing with less effort on an android. But if you like to really customize your phone (Roms & kernels, not just homescreens & unapproved apps) then you can try rooting. Hope that helps.

Android is a far more tightly integrated OS than iOS. For example, the search functionality is pervasive in Android. It goes through the whole system and ties together information from different OS sources. As a consequence, the apps operate in a more connected manner than is possible in iOS (where the apps are more in "silos").

Also, Android does implement multitasking in a better way than iOS. It allows for functionality to fully run in the background along with full process control. This works better than iOS with its "pause" type of multitasking. For example, it allows the Google Navigation tool to keep you driving your route in the background while you play on the web.

Additionally, the Android brower is both faster than Safari and allows better viewing options (Safari not supporting automatic reflow is in my opinion a major issue).

Another Android advantage is the widget capability, again something not possible in iOS without major OS rebuilding. The widgets let you create homescreens with views of desired information. This allows you to see things at a glance that in iOS require opening apps (examples of Widgets include mail, weather, facebook, news, SMS, the only limit is your imagination).

That brings me to Android's notification system, which is easily the best among all the smartphone platforms. It provides needed information while not interrupting what you are currently doing. It also keeps a notification history so if you get more than one notification you can easily see exactly what occured and choose what to respond to.

Another Android advantage - users can replace OS components with alternatives if they so choose. For example, I don't use the stock Android keyboard. I prefer SwiftKey, which is VERY advanced. It not only predicts the word you are currently typing but uses your past sentence structure tendencies to (very unobtrusively) predict the next few words you might type. To go with the prediction is a single finger press. Other users like other keyboards (Swype is also popular). In iOS it's the Apple keyboard only, which is an ok keyboard but nothing special.

I too am a former iPhone user. While it was "nice" it did not generate the gut level interest from me that my Droid X sis (I just played with configuring it in different ways for hours, I enjoyed the freedom so much). Android makes you feel like a REAL smartphone user.

I have an iPhone 4 and I'm switching purely based on the fact that I'm tired of the same OS...it still feels like the first gen iPhone (obv much faster and more features), but the core OS is the same. I do run a jailbroken phone and can accomplish most things posted here, but that's not why I'm switching, I want a new interface.

I did the same thing a few years ago when I switched to a MacBook Pro...got tired of Windows interface.

Cheaper apps!!! All versions of Angry Birds on Android are Free!!! App develpers unfortunately are going to continue to bring apps to iphone first, because they are the ones that are willing to buy them. The vast majority of android users are cheap and proud of it. However, the developers seem to know that and distribute a great deal of free, ad-supported, apps. Depending on the app, the ads aren't really that bad.

just thought of this analogy

As humans we can only use about 20% of our full potential brain power same with iOS unless you jailbreak the phone Jobs only allows you to use a fraction of the power or capabilities of the phone but switch to android and you get full control of everything, how you see fit, the possibilities with Android are limitless.

I'm not an iphone expert but I do have an ipad and have seen some jail broke videos. Seems like you can create widgets off the lock screen but the phone itself really doesn't have a desktop. On android you can create widgets everywhere and ive got them for my consolidated calendars, twitter, weather radar, weather forecast, pro sports schedule for the current day, and my music app. My ipad is a sea of icons, which I hate.

ugh. iv had an iphone 3g for over 2years now.the first 6 months was cool. enjoyed it. but then i was bored an i started checking out android. wishing i would have went to verizon for og droid. so i jailbroke my phone. cool got some life back in it. over time when u start running the cool **** like widgets (that half the time dont work, or they really arent widgets) your phone crashes an battery dies super fast. obviously this phone an os wasnt made for this lol. but forget all that frustrating things to get some fun outta your phone. just get an android an there is way more options an custom ways to make your phone yours
