huawei honor 8 imap settings

I am trying to help a user set up an IMAP mail account on an honor 8. It seems that the issue may be an intermittent drop of connectivity that results in the error: Cannot connect to server.
Has anyone had this issue?

Could be a mail server drop.

Is this with the default mail app or GMail?
Is the phone on Marshmallow (EMUI 4.1) or Nougat (EMUI 5.0)?
