Android Central Question

I was quite excited to get the P20 Pro after having 2 from the Samsung Galaxy range but it has one thing missing which I find a really big deal. I do not get the little dot top right of call and message icons (is that called a badge??) so I am constantly missing messages. It seems when I get a new message it only shows in a really tiny icon top left of screen or I have to swipe down notifications or go into messages itself. Coupled with only getting one beep/sound when a new text arrives (with Samsung it repeatedly constantly until I opened it) so if I'm not in earshot I'm missing stuff often for hours. Surely you don't have to physically go into notifications to check if you have something new or have missed a call? I just can't believe this is how this phone is supposed to work!!!!!

Theres an option in settings to change the dots to numbers (ie. 3 whatsapp unread messages) maybe try switching to numbers.

For Gmail;

go to Gmail, Settings -> your email -> Manage notifications. At bottom is Badges.

For Messages (Google SMS app):

go to Messages, three dots up right -> Settings -> General -> Notifications. At bottom is Badges again.

Robert thank you (I asked the original question before I signed up to the forum). I had been into the notifications page countless times, I'd even been back to the phone shop to ask an expert and they didn't know and yet the badge for messages is so simple - I hadn't realised the badge selection was off the page and had to be swiped up!!! Now getting SMS badge dots at least so thank you again.

This is one big drawback of Android compared to iOS. It has so many setup settings (witch I love and do not want to give away), but this setting are bad structured. You never know, where some setting is. E.g. this setting is once in general setting of an app. All is set up to show badges, and regular user do not know, there is additional place where it has to be setup to show badges.

Same goes for Always on display (to show time, date and battery status). I would give it under screen and lock screen. But no, it is "hidden" somewhere under battery setting. It has nothing to do with battery - just fact it uses more battery if used, means nothing. All apps use more battery if used. :)

Hey all,

There's actually a way to get it done:
Pinch on the home screen to edit > tap settings > Badge app icons > Badge display mode > Unread messages.

I'd like to know why Snapchat isn't on the list either - any ideas anyone?
When using the 'Notification message' badge display rather than the 'unread messages' setting, Snapchat is included however only shows a dot, as do all the other apps.
It would be a lot handier if Snapchat was added to the list so it could show the total number of snapchats waiting to be opened!
