Hudl 2 - Can I use USB and external power simultaneously

I am considering buying a Hudl 2 but am perplexed by the lack of a separate charge socket. As battery life is poor I want to attach a USB device and have external power connected simultaneously when at home. Is this possible? Some sort of a 'Y' cable seems to be an obvious route but am not sure if it would cause problems.
Why does every new gadget assume users don't want to add peripheral devices except by WiFi or Bluetooth? Whatever happened to the Centronics printer port :-)

Welcome to Android Central! I don't know about a Y connector, but to address the question about the lack of other ports--this was mostly due to the problem of having so many different kinds of proprietary power plugs, depending on the manufacturer. With the microUSB port as a standard, you can use the same cable and charger on practically any device.

Remember also that adding additional ports means additional bulk and weight (not to mention cost) to the device.

I found a number of photos of the internals of the hudl 2 on the site in message. There is a lot of empty space near the USB connector where a power connector could have been added cheaply.
