I decided last night to try the Hulu app now I am sure I was able to get HD quality video on there but I tried it on my Nexus 6p and it was not HD. I am nearsighted not farsighted like 80% of the older population so I can see the tiniest of text on a phone screen and it did not look HD too me was 480p at best. Using Netflix which is in HD looked amazing. I don't know what they did when they upgraded the app but the videos on Hulu look bad.

I will try my Nexus 7 2013 model to see if the videos are in HD or not.
Update: Just tried on my Nexus 7 and the quality was worse. It was not even 480p more like 360p. Really bad. Deleted the app from the tablet now too.

Did you check the settings in the Hulu app? I don't have it myself, but perhaps there's some sort of "optimize for reliability" setting enabled by default. The app might think you have poor reception or something along those lines and has decreased the resolution as a result. In other words, you may be able to override that and manually set it to only play in HD.

I looked no settings for video quality however on the 6P when playing video you can adjust it to medium, high auto but unless I put it on auto I get sub 480p which looks horrible. Also the options only have to turn off autoplay, notifications and captions.

Anyone else having issues? I updated to 7.0 even doing a full factory reset but the video still looks like mud. I can't find anything on why the mobile app won't play in HD anymore. It use to.

I don't use Hulu but I read through a bunch of recent comments - not surprised you're complaining about video quality...

I am afraid to read the comments on the Play Store anyway as there is too much profanity (yes Google allows anything in the reviews unlike Apple, Amazon, Microsoft rant over.) Thanks for reading them. So it is not me or my devices.

App was updated and still only mud 480p quality. What is the point of updating it then? I bet it is going to take months before it is fixed. Lazy young dev's update and make things worse all the time.

It could be the network, or possibly the app is downgrading the resolution so it doesn't slow down while watching. I fired up a show I know to be amazing quality while watching at home, but looks like crap on a slow network.

I have 60 down and 5 up so it is not my connection. Netflix also streams fine in HD too.

Are you using T-Mobile? It could be their "Binge On", which tends to limit video to 480P, unless you turn it off.

I always use Wifi streaming Hulu. Also Binge On does not work for my plan it still uses mobile data which they don't tell you unless you call them up to find that out. Also I said my Nexus 7 (2013) did the same thing which is a Wifi only device.

About a month ago I started having issues with Hulu on two separate smart TVs, a Nexus Player, and two different phones. Hulu tried telling me it's me devices. I guess all 5 went bad at the same time even though NetFlix continues to work fine. I just cancelled, don't have the time to deal with their ignorant "support".

TV apps Roku, Apple TV and Fire TV Hulu apps work great and are in HD even 1080p and trust me I can tell the difference. The mobile app is crap no HD.

After trying it out on various networks and different shows, I'm inclined to agree - at best it's maybe 720p with reasonably still footage like a sitting interview. But any quick actions and the picture deteriorates into low resolution. With the Netflix app on my G3 and on my Roku the picture always matches, and on my G3 is sometimes better looking. The Hulu app is the opposite, great picture on Roku but crap on device. Perhaps it's time Hulu hired some new developer talent as their software is less than pleasant all around (except on a computer).
