HW vs SW decoding?

I recently downloaded a MP4 video on my Nexus 7. I noticed that on normal players, the video glitches on a certain scene during the middle and doesn't play after that scene. However, when I switch from HW to SW on MX player, the video plays without any problems. Is that normal? Is SW decoding preferable to HW decoding? Thank you.

In general, HW decoding will give better overall quality--but only if there aren't any potential hardware compatibility issues. The general rule of thumb with MX Player is to use HW decoding when possible, but switch to SW decoding if you have issues.
