I am returning my HTC One (M8). Are you?

I used to think the Note series was big... Then I used one for awhile. It ain't so bad..

I think I could handle the M8 ;).

Well I have ordered the M8, can't wait to get it. I just wanted to comment on the camera.
You probably DO NOT need more than 4 MP in a phone. I don't know of a single person making 8x10 prints from their phone snap shots. You can still make good prints up to 6x8 size with a 4 mp (2400x1600). The actual physical size of the the pixels is FAR more important than the difference in resolution between a 4 and 8 MP image.
The Megapixel Myth

"One needs at least a doubling of linear resolution or film size to make an obvious improvement. This is the same as quadrupling the megapixels. A simple doubling of megapixels, even if all else remained the same, is very subtle. The factors that matter, like color and sharpening algorithms, are far more significant."

I have used a nexus device. I had the nexus 4, and nexus 5 actually. They aren't present during some games, and videos. They are there every other daily task you do so 95% of the time, they are wasting space.

They aren't wasting space if they serve a purpose.

I agree. And really, the only time the extra screen is important is when watching videos, viewing photos, or using a full screen app/game.

This is so silly. If this was the case then there wouldn't be any point and shoot or DSL cameras larger than 4mp.

I have the M7 and love it, but the camera isn't good. With a subject that is close to you it lacks detail, anything further away than 10 feet or so is completely lost. Don't even think about zooming in on anything or cropping after the fact.

No, a phone doesn't need 40mp, but 8? 12? 16? Sure.

I'm not sure I agree. I certainly wouldn't want a smaller screen than I have on my M7 and that's what the M8 has.

Huh? :what:

Look at the side by side comparisons of the screens. With the buttons visible, the M8 screen appears smaller than the M7.

"Appears" versus "is smaller" are two different things I'd say... :what:. Unless they are counting the screen measurement as the whole phone but I doubt it.

OK, but there is clearly less vertical space on the M8 than the M7 when the on screen buttons are visible, which is the vast majority of the time. Seems silly especially when you're looking at the HTC logo bar below that.

Maybe the camera is not good but that fact has zero to do with the pixel count. If your photos are lacking detail YOU need to learn about focus. Seriously, do some reading on the elements of digital photography before you try to tell people what's silly and what is not.

Let's see, you tap on the focal point and take the picture. Is that about it? Yeah I got that.

You shouldn't need to know anything about photography to get decent images, the vast majority of the time with the phone in your camera. That's the expectation. The camera on the M7 falls short of that and so far it looks like the camera on the M8 isn't significantly better.

You shouldn't need to know anything about photography to do, ummm, photography? Ok I guess we are done here...

Interesting to note there are some strikingly detailed pics posted in the camera thread taken with the M8. Maybe knowing a little about photography does help.

If I understand you correctly, you are implying that the casual user just wants to take a picture and get good results, without having to worry about the details associated with photography or changing default settings. Is that correct?

A singles quarterly loss doesn't mean the company is doomed. As I said, the M7 was profitable for them.

They certainly need to improve their financial position, but let's not right them off just yet.

It's not a single quarter. That's just the first link I found. Q4 was even worse for them.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'profitable'. Their earnings have gone done every quarter in 2013. Sure, the One is their best selling device to date, but that means little when your company is going down the drain.

I'm not writing HTC off, and honestly it's the last thing I want to have happen. But the M8 will do little to nothing to save them.

There is more demand than supply for the m8 in their home country, that didn't happen with the m7. It sounds to me like they are off to a good start with this new device. Also despite financial success they have managed to obtain Gary Oldman for the new commercials, which are played all the time where I am

I liked him in 'The Fifth Element'! Other than that, I'm not quite sure how relevant he is.

Umm how about the Batman movies. Just because you don't think he's relative doesn't discredit him as a huge star and a wonderful actor

Their home country is irrelevant to big picture sales. Gary Oldman is irrelevant. They have enough money to hire a famous actor for a TV ad. That means nothing to what I'm saying.

HTC is in big trouble and the M8 isn't the solution.
