I notices this when I was half asleep so I could be wrong. I noticed that ifyou receive an email before 6AM even if your profile is set on normal notifications (noise on normal) your phone will only vibrate and not ring so you can sleep. Have anyone else noticed this or was I imagining it?

u sure you woke up? i noticed on june 30th that my phone received Gingerbread but I was half asleep too. then i woke up and my phone rebooted... 
I don't think these phones are that "smart"! 
Or are you running some app that is? Sometimes I hear the notification depending on how heavily I'm sleeping, usually I don't, thus why I leave the phone on normal sound settings (also don't want to have to remember to take it off silent of vibrate). But, I have noticed that the notification LED stops flashing after a while if you don't acknowledge whatever event triggered it (regardless of time of day).
