I figured out the battery

4g uses less power than 3g. if you could disable 3g and leave on 4g that would be best. but can't disable 3g because the same radio that does 3g also handles the 1x for voice :(. You can disable the connection to evdo, but not the radio itself.

though that could jsut be verizon's marketing spiel. it might not be true at all. but fwiw verizon says 4g uses less power.

what if we put the phone into lte only mode? I didnt try txt or call while in that mode yet nor a battery test.

I guess you could but if you are in a spotty 4G area, and lose 4G there is nothing to fall back on.... Thus leaving you with NO service correct?

calling and texting work with LTE only. Internet reverts to 1X since I'm not in an LTE area.

So my screen has been on for 5hrs now doing web and police scanner and some angry birds and im at 30% so i will make 6hrs for sure.

The other day when i did this test i didnt turn mobile network off and it died in 4hrs so you have to turn that off for this to work

I think tomorrow lte only test will result in about 3hrs of use before it dies but we will see.

great, thanks!

All test below where done with all push and update off locations off, everything off. With screen on the lowest setting looking a web a little but mainly just leaving the screen on like i did for all the other test i got

Phone settings Time on display with 20% left

Lte Only Mode 2hrs 36min

Cmda Only with prl I got 3hrs 49min

Wifi on 4hrs 3min

Wifi on but with mobile network off 5hrs 31min (you can still call and txt with this and wifi will be internet)

I stopped the test when the battery was at 20% So yeah you could add a little more to each test but not much...

Im going to do 1 last test tonight and that will be talk time. debating how i should have phone setup while doing that test... 4g 3g talk radio only on???

So after hours of playing around and talking to others i decided to try wifi.

Hit menu-setting-wireless&network-

Turn on wifi

Turn off mobile network (MAke sure you do this or it wont help

phone call *#*#4636#*#* phone info- select cmad auto (prl)

Before the best i could do was 4hrs and 10min on a battery of AWAKE Time

Well i have had my phone setup this way connected to my wifi and i am at

3 hrs 26min uptime

2 hrs 48min of awake time

with 73% battery left

Normally i would be at about 30-40% right now.

Try it and see

I have a post going most people are only getting 2-4hrs awake time check it out http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-thunderbolt/71090-read-first-post-then-post-battery-results.html

But after doing the above awake times are way better

But then i was thinking i should have a flip phone and a ipod if im going to use wifi and most people wont be able to do this But mobile network is killing the battery!!!

Been using WiFi for a week, it's been mentioned many times before in most people's tips & tricks. Welcome to the party.

Also, the WiFi auto detects when you enter a WiFi area and alerts you (in settings/Wireless & Networks) so you can switch if you like.

I'm on WiFi all the time at:
- home
- office
- friends & family's homes
- Starbucks
- Bob Evans
- Panera Bread
- Most every public meeting place

Now that you know how people are getting longer Awake times - maybe you will believe them when they report what they are getting.

Not sure what your talking about if you read what i just posted you will see most aint true. Also most people with oem battery are only getting 2-3hrs screen time so all my test are dead on and people are not getting 9hrs of screen time lol

Really dont care to go back and forth with you. and ask nice to just leave my post. Thanks

I didnt buy this phone to sit on wifi all day i bought it for 4g and all the things it can do.

So why have the phone if you have to turn everything off then?

We are in agreement on why have such a powerful phone, if in order to keep it running for more than half a day most features have to be either turned off or set to the very lowest settings.

I don't like having to THINK about my cell phone during the day. I would rather think about doing my job and just have my cell phone work when I need it and do what I bught it for.

All of these high end Droid phones are hamstrung by the weak batteries. I'm sure SOMEDAY the batteries will catch up with the power needs of the hardware, but it looks like it's going to be a long time coming.

Glad you found out about WiFi.

Yeah but then why does the droid x last longer 6-8hrs thats almost 2x the tb? The iphone blows it out the water but yes it has a smaller screen. But i was also reading over in the d2 that there getting way more time 7-10hrs so i just dont get why this phone sux for battery life you know. I was mainly just seeing if my phone was bad as i dont like to return exchange play games with them. Verizon is somewhat hard to deal with at time.

Fyi im returning the tb and getting a d2 to wait for a better phone to come out so i dont loose my update promo so will see how the d2 acts with my test.

But again im sure your right over time they will fix these issues im just really disappointed with the phone. Also all this talk of 4g cap in the summer is why im so hard on this phone to keep it but it just dont work and others are reporting the same. Just really sux!!!

TB is my first Droid phone, so I don't know about DX, maybe the battery has a higher capacity, maybe it doesn't have as many power draining features?

I'm re-tinking my "need" for this bigger screen. I have big hands, but even for me, it's not as easy to use with one hand like my BB Storm was.

Also, It's too dark to read in daylight (even when turned up 100% - which drains the battery faster)

The reasons for getting this phone were for the following features:

- 4G when away from WiFi for web use. And it has been REALLY nice to use.
- Hot Spot for iPad and other devices when not at home. Very handy.
- Larger screen, thought it would be easier to read data, PDF's, view images.
- Wanted to see what the Droid's were all about and I was tired of waiting for the Storm 3, I've had the Storm1 for 2.5 years.

My Storm 1 has a better screen (Because I don't have to turn down the brightness)
Better calendar (very important to me)
Better email (usage and graphics)

I have until Wednesday to return my TB - If I keep it, I'm sure I'll get used to it - but I really don't want a phone that I have to get USED to in order to "like" it.

I thought long and hard about the Verizon iPhone, because I'm a Mac everything else user (computers, iPad, iPod.) and I like the UI better - but just didn't trust the first version of VZW iPhone.... especially with the iPhone 5 coming out this summer on AT&T. I believe it will take a year or two for the Verizon version to be on par with the AT&T version.

Wifi is much more stable than 3G or 4G so it definitely helps since it isn't flipping back and forth. Just make sure to disable it when you're not in a wifi area for an extended period of time so it's not constantly searching for a new network.
