Hmm, the 5-bad-PIN recovery mentioned in that article doesn't work on my phone. How about yours?

For free, there's factory reset from recovery mode. If you're OK with killing everything you may have saved on the phone itself (I believe the SD card is not touched) then:

Power down the phone (which you can do from the lock screen same as always).
Hold down volume-up and volume-down, then press and hold the power button. Keep holding all 3 buttons until the Moto logo appears.
When a symbol appears on the screen after the Moto logo, tap the Home key (2nd button from left in the bottom group of 4).
Now you have a menu where the volume-up or volume-down buttons move the selection up and down. Select the "wipe data/factory-reset".
Press the power key to reset the phone to factory-fresh.
