I got my Moto X Pure Edition! (First Impressions and User Reviews)

Re: Just received mine this morning. My take, coming from a Note 2

My Note 2 was a good phone for most of the three years I had it. The 4.4.2 update taking away micro SD support made 16GB overly confining. Battery life once great... no longer made it through work day without charging or swapping batteries. Random reboots and slow response times for the last 6 Months or so became the norm. I ordered MXPE 64GB with walnut back. Feels good in hand and doesn't creak. Little taller for speakers but same width as Note 2. I like curved back. Quick charge is great I use it when I wake up and it's fully charged before I'm heading to work. Note would need to charge though both commutes. I probably should charge MXPE on my afternoon commute, but 15-30 minutes after I get home it's fully charged again. Battery stays cool is very impressive I was worried it would get hot quick charging. Not the case so far. Day 7 right now. It feels very fast compared to my Note 2. I let Google push apps over.. Only time phone got hot. Had to remove Samsung and VZW bloatware, but it was so worth it. My grandfathered VZW UDP is still in effect and if they take it away. I don't need to buy another phone to change carriers.

I tried stock MXPE keyboard on day one and quickly reverted to swiftkey. For SMS I went with Handcent Next. Sounds like you would like the dark theme, but they have lots of options. I like stock launcher so far.

For a case I went with otterbox defender I had it August 30th... First time I've had case before I even ordered the phone. Seidio has been my preference but I'm sure they will support MXPE since they never supported 2014 Moto X. I love the walnut and hate hiding it, but I need belt clip and heavy armor to protect phone. My old cases all have scars so it's a necessary evil for long phone life.

I'm very happy with MXPE it's a great replacement for my Note 2. The Note 5 had to many strikes against it. Price being around $350 higher, no removable battery, no micro SD card, TouchWiz, VZW specific model, slow updates, and to much bloatware. My Note 2 cost me more than MXPE maxed out on moto maker... Three years ago. Is MXPE perfect? No, but it's pros out weight it's cons for me.... Especially against current and rumored near future phones.

Handcent is a great texting app that is very customizable.

I have been using the original moto x for 2 years and I just can't put it inside a case. It feels too good to hold. So I use a sleeve/pouch for when I'm carrying it around.

I ordered 2 that fit the iPhone 6+ which is the same size. No recommendation here since I don't have my phone yet to test them but you get the idea.

Let us know how those fit after you get the phone and the pouches in hand. The difference in depth between the phones might be an issue.

For the type thing you are looking for sports and work attire sites have some pouches and belt attached cases in larger size designed to protect in the workplace and during outdoor activities. Not usually the best looking, but............

My girlfriend's pure fits perfectly inside them. A bit snug but I'm assuming after a week or so they will break in

Good to know, I may go that route instead of a bumper or clear case.

Re: Just received mine this morning. My take, coming from a Note 2

I just ordered the Incipio DualPro case. It looks pretty good.

As an update, I unplugged at 8am and it is presently 7:12 pm. I currently have 30% battery remaining. That should take me to bed time. Not too bad.

Here's some protective (and cheap) cases:

For Motorola Moto x Style Pure Edition Hybrid Armor Shockproof Case Y Kickstand | eBay

For Motorola Moto x Style Pure Edition Hybrid Stand Belt Clip Holster Cover Case | eBay

NP City w Style Quality Phone Case Holster for Motorola Moto x Pure Edition | eBay

Motorola Moto x Pure Edition Case Hard Soft Rubber Hybrid Defender Kickstand | eBay

Unfortunately, there aren't a whole lot of choices right now. But that will change soon, when UAG, Ballistic, Trident, Spigen, and Ringke all come out with some cases. For now, cheap Chinese cases will have to suffice.

Extrapolate: *to form an opinion or to make an estimate about something from known facts.

I'd agree that elaborate might be slightly more appropriate, but extrapolate is fine here as well.

Original poster elaborates, you read and you extrapolate.

Expand on that could also work.

Re: I got my Moto X Pure Edition! (First Impressions)

The Starbucks app does this so it makes it easier to scan. It should reset when you're done paying.

Android pay does this as well.

Don't accidentally bring up one of your cards at night, it's blinding.

Another Moto Pure review

Just got mine Wednesday. My take;

In general, the Moto X Pure is just another Android phone. The installation of Android is cleaner than most, but there are still some items I really wish I could just dump. I have fewer than usual items disabled but there are still some – their photo service (Picasa), and their office apps like Sheets, Docs, Slides and stuff like Translate. How many of us actually use office functions on their phones? And why can't I get rid of it? I will never, ever use it. I’m willing to bet perhaps 5% of us will, at most. Just let us download that from Play and keep it off my phone if I don’t want it. I’d really like to have that storage back. If I want to write down something I generally use Onenote which, for a phone, makes a lot more sense. The phone DOESN’T have a file manager, which annoys me. But I’m one of the few that cares about that so I’ll just go download one. I wish Moto would refrain from putting their email app on board. Heck, I wish Gmail wasn’t onboard. I can do without either. I do use Gmail, but I don’t use Googles app to get it. It’s much too clunky.
Size and grip are acceptable. I don’t know why blogs keep going on about how the rubberish back aids grip. It does not. You don’t grip the back. You grip the sides, people! And the sides are abruptly edged metal. It’s not awful, but comfortable it is not. The back makes zero difference. It could be made from jello and it wouldn’t matter. However the phone does jam a lot of screen in a small form factor (relatively). It’s about the same screen size as my Note 4, but the body is nicely smaller. I appreciate that. But I will be putting a TPU case on it just for comfort in use.
One thing I hate. Hate hate hate Hate HATE. The new Google dialer purely sucks. Sucks the inflow to a sewage treatment plant. I want a keypad when I start it. I don’t want blinding bright colors and no way to fix it. What the heck, Google? Ever hear of dark themes? Give me the option. I don’t want material in your face design. Motorola had a beautiful, subdued, professional looking phone app. Put it BACK. Can I download another? Yup. Does that fix it? Not all of it. You have to go back to this one for voicemail and etc. It. Just. TICKS ME OFF. Ugh.
OK, sorry. I’m back now. Freaking Google. Screw material design. What were you smoking?
Battery
Much has been made of the inadequate battery. Yeah OK. It’s not a Maxx. But it’s fine. The battery lasts at least as well as my S6 – at the end of a workday battery is at 75%, which is about exactly where the S6 leaves off. The Note 4 as well. So unlike the previous Moto X which blew through it’s piddly little battery like the Steelers through the Browns defensive line (seriously – the 2014 Moto X battery was pathetic. Awesome phone made nearly unusable by the battery) I can easily get through a day. That’s me. I’m not a heavy user. But I do read at lunchtime, text through the day and check Facebook (using a browser – I will not use their app.) Point is, it’s on a par with other phones. If you have problems getting through a day with the S6, you will with this phone also. I don’t. So thanks for at least getting us to battery parity, Moto! It’s about time. I just wish there was a Maxx version of this phone. At this point if I want great battery I go to Blackberry. There is nothing better than a Z30 or Passport for battery. I can go days, easily, with a Passport. This one I might go 24 hours before I’m getting itchy for a charge. The phone won’t be flat, but it will be close. But I’m used to that, so it’s OK.

Screen
Yeah, OK. It’s LCD. It’s not super mega awesome in your face like the S6 or Note 4. Icons don’t seem to float off the screen. But in some ways it’s better. Viewing angles for example are much better. Ever notice how if you tilt your amoled display you get color shifts? Doesn’t happen with LCD. Colors are not as intense as they are with Samsungs displays. But that’s fine. The colors are real, not cartoon-y. Resolution is insane. I like it. I was on the fence with buying this until I noticed it had an LCD display. Then I was sold.
Sound
OK, let it be said – this phones sound is phenomenal. Better than an M8. The speakers are loud and very clear. Music comes through nicely. Speakerphone sounds like a desktop unit. Phone calls are crystal clear. I have never had a phone serve me better in terms of sound. Earpiece sound is also excellent. Motorola did a great thing here. I used to consider Blackberry Passport the call and speakerphone king. This phone juuuuuuust edges it out. A lot is made of the M8/M9 sound. To my ear they are, well, acceptable. They sound like a 1970s transistor radio. So yeah, the Pure does somewhat better. So while it’s not a nice stereo sound system, for casual listening, hearing phone calls, using the phone as a GPS system etc, it’s excellent.
Camera
The camera, for most general daytime photography is fine. It comes up reasonably quickly and gets the job done. Face it people. If you are a serious photographer, get a real camera. But for general snaps a phone cam is adequate. Often more than adequate. That’s where this phone is and I am perfectly satisfied. Does it match up to the S6 and Note 4 cams? Not quite. The blogs love to say how wonderful Brand X phone is and how Brand Y doesn’t match it but really – they are picking nits. Making mountains from molehills. They post a picture, say how noisy it is and you know what? There really isn’t a huge difference. Is there some sensor noise? Yes. Does it make the pic awful? No. Neither pic is a work of art. But do the cameras match a good SLR? Hell no. Not even close. So this is comparing midrange imaging at best. I haven’t met a cell phone that meets my standards and yes I’ve used iPhones. They are all, every one, just adequate. Nothing exciting. This phone cam will serve you just fine almost all the time. If you are going to be taking critical pictures, get real. Get a real camera.
Notifications
As always, the kerfuffle about the display having to come on to light up the ambient display Moto uses for notifications is overblown. Yes, the entire screen lights, dimly. You get a darkish grey color instead of the pure dark of an LED display. No, it doesn’t hurt battery. Yes, it’s a little brighter. No, it’s not going to burn your retina out at 2AM. I’d really prefer an LED notifier, but we are stuck with this. I can deal with it. It doesn’t really convey more useful information than an LED and to me it’s not as elegant. But people seem to like it and it serves the purpose
Other
I’m not sure what else there is. Performance is up there with S6 and Note 4. No stutter, apps load fast. I did notice data speeds are faster than I am used to, but that may be a function of signal at the time. I’ll have to look into that. Radio seems fine. Moto has been traditionally considered the radio champ, but that doesn’t consider Blackberry which, frankly, beats Motorola hollow. Places I get no signal with Moto, Samsung, HTC, Nokia I do fine with BB. Build quality is fine. I know there is a lot made of OMG – it’s all METAL and GLASS! Pretty shiny!!!! But really, what difference does it make? This is not an heirloom. It’s disposable technology. In two years you are going to trash it anyway. I’d prefer plastic for weight and durability. And glass backs? Whose idea was that? Come on, Samsung. I’d like to set down my phone without having it skate off every slightly sloped surface. Yeah it looks cool. Guess what? I put it in a cheap TPU case to KEEP IT FROM SLIDING. Thank you Motorola for putting a rubberized backing on your phones. But it’s still getting a case since the edges are the in-vogue but uncomfortable metal. Take a hint from the new Microsoft phones. Rounded edges, all plastic. Light and comfortable.
So the summary? Moto finally got it mostly right. There are a few problems, but the perfect phone doesn’t exist. This is an excellent phone – right up there with the best of the flagships for way less money. It’s too big, but all phones are too big in my opinion. The old Motorola Razr HD was about right. It’s good at what it does. Go ahead and get it.

Good review. I too love the speakers.

Sent from a cell phone. Sorry for any typos.

Re: Another Moto Pure review

I found this review helpful. And kinda funny. In a weird roller coaster of emotions way. I had no idea where you were going to go with any particular point. And the references to Blackberry made me feel like I might be reading a review from 2009. I'm going to go off somewhere and think about my life now.

Re: Another Moto Pure review

Very good and entertaining review :) I'm glad you mentioned the difference between grippy back and grippy side. I feel the same way - it doesn't matter much about the backs but why don't phone makers put rubber inserts into the sides?

Re: Build Quality Issue! Part 1 of Moto X Pure Edition In Depth Review

Nice Review!

Honestly I would return it if it doesn't line up on the back like it should and ask for a replacement.

Re: Another Moto Pure review

Love the review... Thanks. I too don't understand why people say the rubber back is grippy. It feels like plastic. I'm hoping my leather feels better.

I did find the comment about the need to add a file manager and criticizing adding an email client as odd.
