I got my Nexus 5X (First Impressions, User Reviews)

How do you guys like it compared to the m9? Debating selling. The weight and no fingerprint scanner is bothersome.

Hi everyone

Just got my Nexus 5x in 16gb Carbon Black.

Unfortunately the Carphone Warehouse in my area didn't have the Ice Blue in stock (my preferred colour) and can't believe that they have a shortage of supply. The guy at the till was telling me apparently there were 70 showing up. I said amusingly is that for whole of UK. He said no rather our region i.e Midlands lol.

So anyways I haven't still unboxed it but will post in due time on my first impressions and thoughts.

So excited and I hope that once again I can enjoy the pure Android experience

😁

I'll have a lot more to go over as I get to use it over the next few days, but after getting it last night (which was a complete surprise), I've had a few hours to play with it and see what it can do. I'm holding a 32GB Carbon version.

Let's put some early concerns to bed. I've seen a few people make mention of the performance of this device and how "it seriously lags". No, no it doesn't. I opened 15 tabs on Chrome (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, ESPN, etc), kept open the Facebook/Twitter/Instagram apps along with Photos, Maps, and the AC app. I launched the camera with no issue. I can switch back and forth between apps with no issue. Everything is smooth on this phone----except for the camera app. HDR+ photos still take a little long to process and it's got a little sluggishness to it overall. Fortunately, that's a software issue and nothing I could attribute to the 5X individually. I'm coming from an iPhone 6S and Moto X Pure 2015 and notice no drop in performance at all.

The display is good for a 1080p panel. Good viewing angles, max brightness seems to be more than adequate, and good color reproduction (I'm going to say it follows the sRGB standard, but I haven't confirmed that). It's not a Note 5, but if you prefer more accurate colors, this display won't disappoint. I've said it a few times already, but I'm a huge fan of OEMs still going 1080p because of the performance/efficiency gains.

If you read just about any review on this phone, one of the first things they're going to cover is how "boring" the design is or how "cheap" it feels. We're in the middle of a trend now where metal/glass is the standard and anything different than that is going to be seen as a negative. I don't subscribe to that BS, honestly. I appreciate good design, but I appreciate functionality more. The matte finish on the back of this phone makes it easy to grip---generally not the case on metal or glass phones. The edges aren't chamfered so I'm not getting a nice indent on the inside of my pinky finger (where the bottom of the phone rests). It's extremely light which makes it easy to hold for longer periods of time and makes the overall weight of the device not crossover into a too-heavy status when using a case. This phone wasn't designed to be some jeweled piece of art---it's a smartphone. A smartphone most can use in one hand that isn't slippery and doesn't have sharp edges. Only thing that I'm not a fan of is the larger top/bottom bezels (especially without dual front facing speakers, regardless if it looks like it has them or not), but that's a minor nitpick.

I'm not going in depth on battery or camera because I haven't had nearly enough time to get a good idea about either. If I had to guess, however, the battery life on this phone will most likely fall between an LG G4 and a Moto X Pure 2015. It wouldn't surprise me to see it be a tad better or worse than either of those devices, but -very- early impressions give me that kind of feel.

Little things I've noticed: The buttons are a little less tactile than the original Nexus 5. Not to a point where it's annoying or immediately noticeable, but I did notice it. The phone is solid with no rattles or creaks. Yes, there's an LED notification light, and yes, it's pretty awesome. 32GB leaves around 23GB free (use Photos and Drive, people; that's what they're there for). The Type-C cable is white even on the black phone and it's kind of short. Charging is pretty fast, but not sure I'd equate it to the Moto X Pure. Haptic feedback is pretty strong, but not annoyingly so. Headphone jack is on the bottom for those that like that kind of thing. Speaker isn't anything to write home about, but it's not on the bottom and shouldn't be drowned out if it's on a desk or being held in hand. Fingerprints on the screen and on the back seem to be held in check which is really convenient if you're as OCD about cleaning your phone as I am.

I'll more than likely have a full review up in a week or so. So far, I'd say this phone is exactly what I expected it to be, which is a good thing. While the other folks will have fun with their comically large 6P, I think those of us that ordered the 5X won't regret it.

How's the display readability outdoors on a bright day? (ok, might be a tough question for the UK owners :) ) Living in sunny California with a SGS4...

Monoprice has a small range of USB C cables and adapters. They're great for quality at a low price.

Thanks to all the new owners for their participation in this thread!

So i have had this phone from saturday and due to being stuck in bed with a cold thought id post some of my thoughts down

Hardware
I do like the overall feel of the phone it has a nice tactile feel to it, screen is nice and bright and i have come around to the button placement. The screen bezels are perhaps a little big and the overall size did feel tall at first but after the couple days of use thats no longer a issue. the headphone jack is at the bottom right which i personally don't like . build quality is good feels like a phone that could take some serious punishment

Fingerprint scanner
I did role my eye at this when google announced that the N5X would have this but i have been proven wrong the fingerprint scanner is just fantastic unlocks fast and super reliable its light years better then Samsung galaxy s5 one it has became my preferred way to unlock my phone ive gotten so use to it i keep trying to unlock my tablet

Software
So nice being back on stock Android again coming from the s5 the device is really snappy no signs of lag chrome runs great now. Not sure why but when my S5 updated to lolipop google music seemed to break and became unusable. that problem seemed to have gone now with marshmallow.

Camera
seems fine for me i am not a camera expert so cant really go into much detail ive been happy with the pictures so far. Takes pictures fast but the camera app is a disappointment i guess it would be best to get a 3rd party camera app tbh

Battery Life

Seems ok for me at least i would consider myself a high user of the phone during the day and have not been making a dash for a charger or being careful not to drain it

overall

coming from a Samsung galaxy s5 i am very happy with the N5X the perfect size for me will keep you updated with the battery

Re: Mine has just been delivered

OK, after a couple of days use I may as well chip in with my initial thoughts, so here goes (grab a coffee).

1) Packaging: Not a big deal for everyone but I thought it was nicely done. I especially liked the protective sleeve it comes in. Yeah I know that's my OCD kicking in but I thought it was cool compared to the usual protective sleeves that usually adorn phones.

2) Charger: It's still a mystery to me (and others) why the charger plug and lead are in white even though the device colour is carbon. Cost I'm sure but it just seems a little off to me (nit picking). Oh and the lead is SHORT (1M in length). I purchased the following to remedy my problem: USB 3.1 Type C to USB 3.1 Type C Cable by MediaDevil: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics and Cable Matters® USB 2.0 Type C (USB-C) to Type A (USB-A) Cable in Black 2m: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

3) Look and feel: If you owned an OG Nexus 5 then you most likely won't be disappointed with the 5X. It certainly has retained that overall look, and mostly feel, of the original. That said if you are expecting the SAME soft feel touch to the rear of the phone then you might be disappointed. It's not as rubbery but it's definitely not cheap, hard plastic like on the Galaxy S3 and some phones of that era. Having said all that it is almost impossible to lay down a fingerprint mark on this thing. Whether it's the material it's made from or the oleophobioc coating I don't know but it just works. For some the feel of the phone may just be a little too slippery but HTC M7/8/9 slippery it is not. I'm staying naked (on the phone, trust me I'm wearing trousers writing this !). Build quality is good in my view. No creaks on the back that I've noticed and the buttons feel a little softer on pressing them (the action not the buttons themselves). Overall size is just under 1/2 an inch taller than the OG Nexus (you get used to it, or at least I have). I had a Nexus 6 and I just couldn't live with that thing hence why I went for the 5X and not the 6P.

4) Screen: Hey, it's fine. I turned off adaptive brightness as I've never found it worked well for me. I've got this thing turned down to almost nothing and it's more than usable. Full brightness is, well BRIGHT. Colours are clean and bright, good black reproduction, white's could be a little brighter but that's going to be a user defined thing. It's fine for me but if you're expecting the whites to come out like your Sunday laundry then no.

5) Responsiveness: It flies, don't worry. I'm using Nova Launcher prime and everything works just great. Scroll speeds are fluid and fast and apps respond quickly to touch input.

6) Button placement: Meh, it could have been better but it all depends where you usually hold your phone. For some, I'm sure they will say it's just fine. For me, they could have just been a little higher up on the side and I find myself having to slide my hand down to adjust the volume rocker. Not a big deal and I'm sure I'll get used to it, I'm just putting it out there.

7) Fingerprint scanner: It's fast ! No I mean it's fast ! Only the very odd false register which was down to my finger placement rather than the scanner itself. Screen on from lock screen using it is...................... you guessed it, fast. While there is no touch to pay available in the UK just yet (C'mon Google !) there is something very cool about being able to pay for Play Store purchases just by touching your finger to the back of the phone, I just love that !

8) Speaker: It has one. Yeah just one and it's at the bottom. This thing ain't gonna win any awards on sound. I had an HTC M7 and after Boom Sound nothing compares (excuse the Sinead O'Connor reference). It's tinny on music reproduction and you can barely warm that up with the equalizer settings in Google Play music. Volume is also quite low below 75%. Once you get above that the volume is just fine. It's not a sudden change or anything like that it's just relatively low below that level.

9) Notifications: On screen notifications when the screen is locked and you pick it up. I forget the correct terminology but basically what the Motorola devices do, yeah that. LED RGB notifications sit down in the bottom speaker. The type and arrangement are different from the OG Nexus which had a single, round and muted brightness to it. This thing has a 9 mini LED arrangement which should not be viewed without wearing Raybans ! Seriously it's bright. So much so that I have to turn the phone face down in a darkened bedroom, just bear that in mind. As I said in another post somewhere on here I was using LED Blinker Pro on the OG Nexus without issue. On the 5X I found that it would not trigger all notifications for me. I tried to fix it but couldn't but it may work for you. I switched to LED Flow and have had no issues since. Your mileage may vary. Here's a quick and dirty short video of the LED on the 5X, https://photos.google.com/share/AF1...?key=TUFidzM4WHFHbGI3bFl0UktqdlhzWERWV245MF9n It does not do the brightness justice !

10) Camera: Honestly I'm hardly going to bother too much here. There are so many reference points out there for you to check out how this thing performs you are better served there. It seems just fine to me in the limited testing I've done. It's a phone guys not a DSLR. If you want to take photo's you can enlarge to the size of a house then this (or pretty much any other phone aren't going to suit your needs). No seriously come on, most people use phone photos for social media these days and pretty much any phone is going to do a good enough job for that. If you are one of these people that makes comments like, "oooh the colour / color (our USA friends) depth is lacking" or similar then I give up. The spec's of this phone have been out in the wild a little while now so you know what you are getting in terms of features etc. If the lack of OIS is an issue for you then best you move on and buy something else right now. For those of us that just want to take a quick snap of us with our friends on a drunken night out to show what idiots we can make of ourselves on Facebook then this is going to get the job done. The ONE thing I was disappointed in with the new camera app refresh is the loss (has anyone found different?) of manual camera settings. I've tried 3rd party camera apps but it seems, from my experience (and from other posts I've read) that the camera UI of those apps appears upside down? Perhaps it is something to do with the developers API not being updated for 6.0 (how should I know, I'm not a developer). If you have found manual settings in the stock camera on the 5X then PLEASE let me know where and how to enable it. Slow motion video does slow motion video, the end.

11) Overall: I'm liking this phone. I appreciate the extra screen real estate compared to the Nexus 5 without it being a behemoth like the Nexus 6. It's well built and feels good in the hand (you may feel differently). I appreciate there will be some people out there that will say, "Yeah but for pretty much the same money I can get phone X (no pun intended) and it does this which the Nexus doesn't", etc etc and that is always going to happen. We are individuals with differing needs / wants and that's just fine. There is no phone available today (someone will tell me I'm wrong) that has every feature you want and does all the things you want it to do and the price point you want to pay <waits for deluge of comments to the contrary>. It's all good, the Nexus 5X may not be for you but for those who want one I don't think you'll be majorly disappointed. One last thing for those of you in the UK. Carphone warehouse are selling the 32Gb version for £10 more than the Google store wants for the 16Gb version, it's a no brainer! I cancelled my order through Google and got refunded and CPW delivered a day early than the promised 19th of this month *Yayyyyyyy embargo busters*. While this post will not answer every question / query you might have about the 5X I just wanted to give you my overall impressions so far.

Enjoy.

Many thanks for the detailed analysis. I am still on my M7. This is the only phone Ive ever seen that I can use in bright daylight. How is the 5X, does it compare?

How buttery smooth is your 5x

Pretty much says it all....how is the performance of your new phone! Wanting to hear some performance opinions

I haven't really had an opportunity to test the screen brightness / readability outside just yet so hopefully there are others here who can help you with that question, sorry.

As an aside, I got the following results on battery last night (yes I was up that long !)

Re: How buttery smooth is your 5x

Great, probably the least janky I've seen chrome on any phone.

Seriously though, barely a hiccup switching apps, in the launcher, chrome...

Very happy with it!

Oh and the fingerprint scanner is awesome!

I would appreciate anyone loading the Android Central Forums full desktop site with Chrome and use it for a while. See if you can open your profile from your username.
Not so much that any thread or page will take a while to load, it will, but how responsive is it to selecting something without having to zoom in much.

I mostly use the forum apps but I do need the desktop site regularly.

Chrome on my Moto G with an SD 400 is utterly awful. I want my Samsung Note 3 back with the Internet browser, I tried the rest.

Kind of a good test really.

SMH, didn't see the previous post by Martin mentioning Chrome, but still..... :)

Re: How buttery smooth is your 5x

I've had mine for about a day now, and I think I'm ready to give some impressions that might or might not be relevant:

Build Quality: I've never minded plastic phones as long as they don't feel like a hollow shell. I thought that the Nexus 5 was perfect in a utilitarian way. The 5X's plastic is a little smoother and slightly less grippy, but the device overall feels well-built. It's nothing like say, a plastic Samsung Galaxy S. I am not a fan of bottom located headphone jacks, especially on a device of this size, since it's hard to plug in a headphone and be able to shift your hand around the phone in one-handed use, and I do have to shift my grip around to reach all parts of the display if I'm going one handed (maybe Google wants me to buy a Bluetooth headset that badly?). Which brings me to...

Device Size I've avoided buying a new phone for 2 years because I liked the Nexus 5's size. Actually, I like the 2013 Moto X's size, but the Nexus 5 was close enough. This phone is certainly bigger. The width is slightly larger, but the height is what kills me. I've got decent sized hands and can't hold the phone in such a way that I can write a text, and then reach to the top of the screen to pull down settings/a notification without shifting my grip. That's frustrating and I'm almost tempted to return it, though I have no credible alternatives. The recently announced HTC One A9 looked like it would be a better fit, but is only 1.2mm shorter and 1.8mm narrower. Still, the size of the bezel at the bottom of the phone is annoying, as is the fact that the bottom bezel is actually larger than the top.

Screen I can't notice the pixels at 1080p and I've got >20/20 vision. The screen gets plenty bright, and I've used it in sunlight (though autumn sunlight in Chicago, not on a beach in the tropics) without issue. Feels like it definitely gets brighter than the Nexus 5. Sometimes I feel that it's got a slightly yellow tint. Then I look again and think I was crazy. It could be my mind playing tricks, or it could be a color issue. Still, if you're used to the oversaturated colors of OLEDs, this will seem muted in comparison. It's not that the screen is in any way bad, or that the colors are dull (in fact, I have a suspicion that it does a pretty good job of matching the sRGB profile), it just doesn't have a quality that particularly draws you in.

Performance: On net, the phone is smooth and runs quickly. I've noticed a couple random stutters that were pretty inexplicable, however: Once when I was in Swiftkey settings and checking or unchecking a button resulted in animations (the faint 'dimple' effect that happens when you click a setting) that were both laggy and seemed to stutter (that is, were working at a low FPS.) This was the first boot after my phone installed an update and all my apps using the Google Settings. I'm not sure if that's relevant, but I haven't been able to reproduce that lag since (even when I've deliberately tried to slow things down - opening a bunch of tabs, playing then pausing videos on YouTube and Netflix, opening a game, opening another game, and then going into settings). The one exception to good performance is in the camera app, which seems to take a while to load. It's different than the one available from the Play Store (and which was the default on previous Nexus phones). On one hand, it's disappointing that the one of the first Nexuses with a good camera ships with a slow-to-load camera app (since it was developed only for this phone and the 6P), on the other, it's 'version 1.0' so it could get better.

Camera The camera takes good photos. Like, very good photos for a phone. Low light performance is good, and for the first time I feel like I can go to a dimly lit bar or restaurant and take a group photo that won't look embarrassing next to an iPhone's (I used a Nexus 5, Galaxy S4, 1st gen Moto X in the past 2 years). Whether it's better than the iPhone 6S is probably an academic argument. They're different cameras; both take very good photos and I'm sure that if you took 100 photos in different conditions, 50 would be about a tie and each one would 'win' by a small margin in 25 of them.

Fingerprint Scanner This thing is fast. It works, almost universally. After 1 day of use I think it probably reads my finger 95% of the time, even when I casually touch the sensor; that is, I don't have to think about placing my finger flat on the reader. Just put my finger on it, from any angle, and it works.

Battery Life I haven't done enough to really test it, but it's fairly good. I'm under no delusions that I'll get through 2 days of use. It charges fast on the included charger. One thing to note: When you plug it in to the included 15W charger, it says 'Charging Rapidly,' which it did not last night when I plugged it in to a 5V, 10W charger with a USB-A to USB-C cable I bought on Amazon. Speaking of which, the included cable is disappointingly short at 1 meter (a hair over 3 feet). That's barely enough to reach directly up from the floor to desk height, and isn't enough to leave much cable on your desk. I'm buying a 2m USB-C to USB-C cable for the desk, and I'm considering buying another A-to-C cable to have another charging option.

Marshmallow is a solid improvement over Lollipop. Now on Tap has worked pretty well in my experience. My girlfriend texted 'hero reborn starts thurs' and Google was smart enough to figure out that she was referring to the TV series 'Heroes Reborn,' despite the lack of plural 'hero' and capitalization. In IM conversations about where to go for dinner, it got the names of multiple restaurants we discussed nearby. In this case, it seems to work via whatever's on screen, rather than on the entire page which is good. Other than that, a new version of Android, a new way of handling power or volume controls. Why they haven't figured out one way to do volume and notifications in 7 years of trying is beyond me; the new way works better unless you were used to setting Priority Only notifications via the power button. (If you did, it's still there, just under quick settings, and it finally lets you move in one hour increments, so you can select 5 hours, or 9 hours, or 11.) I can't wait for more apps (especially bank ones) to get updated to support fingerprint authentication.

10% battery remaining and 4 1/2 hours SOT today and around 15 on battery.

About as good as I got with the S6 Edge and Moto X Style.

Re: Mine has just been delivered

Martin, I'm torn between S6 and 5X. On UK Amazon they're about the same price, and I cannot for the life of me decide which one I want. Which would you recommend and why?

Some early comments from a new Ice Blue Nexus 5X owner on Verizon who came from a Moto X 2014

Got the phone yesterday and still getting a hang of things so no comments yet on battery but here are some early observations.

1. The Ice Blue from straight on is definitely a light blue I would even say powder blue more so than tiffany blue. I will say that from different angles it can give the appearance of a little green in the color. I definitely like it but this would explain why it looks so different in pictures online.

2. No issues moving my SIM from Verizon. Everything works, voice, text, data. VoLTE works too. I don't have mobile hotspot on my plan to test. The only thing not working is the Verizon data widget so you'd have to check it manually in the My Verizon app.

3. Camera is light years better than the Moto X 2014. No question at all, especially in low light. Not sure how it compares to the iPhone of S6 but I am very happy with the camera.

4. The build is very plastic feeling. It almost feels like it was designed to be put in a case as it feels like it has no heft at all. I guess this is a good thing if you want a light phone but I almost think it's too light. Also the buttons feel cheap as well, there is definitely some wiggle to the power button.

5. The speaker is terrible. It does at least get loud but it almost sounds like the speaker is an internal speaker that's slightly muffled despite it looking like it's a front facing speaker. Even the mono speaker on the Moto X 2014 blows it away.

6. Vibrate is definitely weaker than the Moto X 2014, I barely even feel it although on the bright side it's not as loud when sitting on a table.

7. Ambient display is very hit or miss. There seems to be no consistency to when it turns itself on. It's almost the point I think I would rather turn it off completely and just rely on the LED which is fantastic btw.

8. The screen has some of the best blacks I have seen recently on an LCD however I really miss the deep blacks of my AMOLED devices which I have had on my previous 5 phones going back to the Galaxy Nexus. I almost wish there was an option to at least make the colors more vibrant on the screen just to help compensate for those moving from AMOLED displays.

9. Fingerprint reader is great and in a really perfect spot for easy use. It does get a touch warm but nothing I'd worry about.

10. I haven't seen any lag in performance but I am not a heavy user.

11. Google looks to have changed around the DPI settings for 1080p devices or at least ones of this size as the text across the board is much smaller than on my Moto X 2014 of the same size and resolution. I have both send to normal sized fonts. I actually like this as I felt things were too big on my Moto X 2014.

12. Despite being a similar width to the Moto X 2014 the Nexus 5X feels bigger in the hand, most likely due to the loss of the curved back. I am sure I can adjust to this if I decide to stick with a one handed use phone.

Anyway that's all for now. Feel free to ask questions. I also ordered a Nexus 6P which I hope to get soon to compare. Overall I like it but if I end up being fine with giving up one handed use I will be happy to keep it over the 6P. That is a big if though as the 6P is really tempting with its better screen, speakers and build.

8.

I would recommend getting 32gb Nexus 5x from Carphone Warehouse at £350 and spending the rest of the money on accessories.

That Amazon UK price is a rip off and we thought Google was selling it expensive.

Hope that helps
