I have a $1,000 Flagship pixel 3XL, and I am constantly jealous of 2 year old smartphones...

Because a lot of people don't care when their YouTube refreshes so often when I get back to it even though I only have email, messanger and whatsapp open on the background. It's ridiculous.

Not happening here or on my V20, G5 or even my iPhone and also no lag so there is probably something else going on with your device.

My Pixel 2XL never lags and I have over 200 apps. I think 6GB is the sweet spot for RAM these days and 12GB is ridiculous. But I have had no issues. I must admit to being an app closer and usually close my apps down several times a.day. but I think that is muscle memory from having an older iPhone that required it.

I think something must be wrong with your phone. It could be an issue with an app you have installed. When I was having trouble getting the three app to work I reset my phone and set it up as a new device. I got that app to work finally. One of my other apps was conflicting with it. Now my phone just works beautifully again.

What app was giving you the problems?

I too was growing frustrated with my 3XL, especially with the outrageous lag between pressing the shutter button to snap a picture and the camera actually taking the picture.
But with that being said, I received the March update 5 days ago and it corrected that. The issues you are experiencing aren't hardware related, they are software. Try to see if you can get the update and then see if it corrected your issues. I am using an unlocked version on At&t.

For what it's worth I have almost 300 apps and even when I have 15-20 open my pixel 3 is lightning fast and ridiculously smooth. I love it

According to Apps in Settings, I have 80 apps and I don't have any problems either. Of course, I also don't do iPhones.

Which of these are you jealous of? (some of which were released late 2017 so not even 2 years)

Apple iPhone 8 (and 8 Plus)
Apple iPhone X
Samsung Galaxy S8
Samsung Galaxy Note 8
Sony Xperia XZ Premium
HTC U11
Huawei Mate 10 Pro
BlackBerry KEYone
Google Pixel 2 (and Pixel 2 XL)
Nokia 8

I got tired of the pixel under performing and having done two replacements I went and sold it and got a galaxy s10+... I dont know what Google Quality was thinking with this device.. it simply NOT thinking... but 1k is too much for a phone that's lacking.

My $1000 S10+ can't play audio over bluetooth using LDAC at "best audio quality / 990kbps" setting. It's a choppy disaster. My Pixel 3 XL works perfectly. All phones have bugs and problems.

True, but there's a fine line between basic functions not working properly and a niche audio streaming preference.

My replacement Pixel 3XL arrives in 2 days. I'll setup for scratch and see how THIS one acts.

I don't know about niche. Its a Sony protocol granted but it should work on any OS 8.0 and above.

Sony WH1000XM3. It's a problem because the Sony app and hence Bluetooth audio defaults to LDAC 990kbps when I connect the headphones. I have to adjust it every time down to a lower bit rate or else audio will be broken. This is a major pain.

I returned the phone earlier today and am back on my Pixel which has always worked perfectly.

I have the same headphones. You should have been able to disable LDAC by invoking the Sony equalizer or changed the software settings in the Sony App. LDAC is great though. I hope I don't have that trouble. Works fine in the Pixel.
