I've only been an android user for a few months now and I'm considering rooting but have a couple of questions.

1) Where's the best place to go to read up on how to root?

2) If I root and don't like it or screw it up can I go backwards easily?

3) What's the major advantage to rooting?

TIA

1) XDA-Developers has a lot of instructions on how to root your device. I recommend you go there, search for your device and look up the instructions. If your device is officially support by CyanogenMod you can find information on that in CyanogenMod's wiki.

2) This depends on your device. Most device allow this.

3) You can customize EVERYTHING you want. If it is modifying system resources to get a better look (i.e. statusbar modding) or just backup your device on a regular basis with apps that require root, ... You basically have no limits when you are rooted. You can even install Custom ROMs then.
