Running on quadcomm snapdragon sch-1535 , 4.4.2. What apps and software to download. Totally new to rooting

I think you are going to want to look under the Verizon method to rooting.

If the kernel date (Settings/General/About device/Kernel) is prior to June 3, 2014, use Towel Root. It's an app you run on the phone. No need for a computer. If the kernel is later, try iRoot. (The Verizon [and AT&T] 4.4.2 and up bootloader is locked, so you can't install a custom recovery like CWM, but you can install SafeStrap - but only after the phone is rooted, so you can't use SafeStrap to root the phone.)
