I use my phones number and tablet together, and connected with each other. They each have different phone numbers, but I can use the phone contacts on both the phone and tablet. So basically everything I get for sms, messages, calls, email on my Verizon tablet, etc, The two devices have two different numbers, but the two devices sync. I really don't understand why I can just connect it with phone and tab, with the prior existing numbers. I don't understand all this.

You probably could. The tablet has its own sim, so it can work independently of the phone isn't around. The two devices synch so if one does something, the other knows.
They would have explained that when you signed the contract. You can have tablets with no sim, only WiFi, or you can just take out the sim.. Depends on how you use the devices.
